Could the GOP impeach Obama for ending the Bush tax cuts?

Though liberals are scoffing, that's the threat from Grover Norquist, the anti-tax activist who has essentially been setting the GOP's tax policy

Grover Norquist, the head of Americans for Tax Reform, raised plenty of eyebrows on Saturday with an interview he gave to National Journal, in which he said that if President Obama is foolish enough to let all the "Bush tax cuts" expire at the end of the year, "Republicans will have enough votes in the Senate in 2014 to impeach." The anti-tax activist holds a lot of sway over the GOP, with almost all House Republicans and every GOP presidential candidate signing his no-tax pledge, but impeachment is reserved for "treason, bribery, and other high crimes and misdemeanors," notes Tanya Somanader in Think Progress. So "suggesting Republicans impeach the president over tax cuts is wildly outlandish." Right?

There's no way the GOP's that crazy: Norquist is just plain "nuts," says Nicole Belle in Crooks and Liars. And even with "idiots and clowns" running the Grand Old Party these days, "there's no way that the Republicans will go down this route." Impeaching over tax policy stretches the Constitution to the breaking point, and won't win any favors with voters, either. "You may think you rule Washington," Grover, but this idea is "just delusional."
"Norquist threatens impeachment if Obama does not extend Bush tax cuts"

Norquist was only speaking figuratively: I imagine these impeachment musings are just one of those "brief bouts of hyperbole" Norquist indulges in when he strays from his laser focus on "tax sanity," says Jazz Shaw in Hot Air. If he was seriously suggesting impeachment for "allowing a legally passed set of tax cuts with a built in expiration date to lapse," somebody needs to press him on it. But either way, Norquist should probably stick to pushing lower taxes and spending.
    "Norquist: Impeach Obama over taxes?"

Never underestimate conservative activists: I have to admit I'm "a little less sanguine than most people when I hear that Grover Norquist is going on about" impeachment, says Charles Pierce in Esquire. Conservatives Republicans have been "thinking, and then acting on, the unthinkable" for years. And remember, they impeached Bill Clinton on almost equally dubious grounds, because they had the votes. So "if you don't think they won't try this farce again, elect them majorities in both houses and see what happens."

As far as I am concerned any of these elected members of Congress who sign any pledge other than the Pledge of Allegiance should be impeached. The Norquist pledge is strictly a special interest pledge only!

Ever since Obama was elected right wingers have been calling for impeachment. Never once has any right winger posted any real valid reason for impeachment. They are just blowing steam. There is not a single valid reason Obama could be impeached.

Just disagreeing with him is not a valid reason.

They know they don't have a reason. They also know they don't *need* a reason; in practice, they just need the votes. If they get the votes, they'll impeach - who knows what charges they'll dream up - and their base will love them for it. They won't care how stupid they look to everyone else.

Who's Grover Norquist? Was he elected to some office the public doesn't know about? I thought Republicans represent the people who put them in office.
      • . 3 mths ago
No. They represent only a select few who can make them more money.

Signing Norquist’s Taxpayer Protection Pledge (atr.org) appears to be a violation of the Code of Ethics for Government Service. Rule 6 admonishes lawmakers to “Make no private promises of any kind binding upon the duties of office…” Read about the Code at Pages 20 and 436 of the House and Senate Ethics Manuals, respectively, at www.ethics.house.gov and www.ethics.senate.gov . Call on Congress to enforce the Code of Ethics for Government Service.

Thanks for that. Maybe we should set up a little chain to that end? Mind if I pass your post on?

Norquist is MISTER 1%. Anyone who sucumbs to his bribe to be elected should be impeached.

Sure, let's spend tens of millions of dollars on a vanity action by a bunch of whiney dolts. Sheesh! And we thought Whitewater was a waste of time and money.

Is Grover Norquist an elected official of ANYTHING? What are elected members of our government doing signing a pledge to any individual? Let alone one that has not been elected or even appointed to ANY office? What a load of crap. Talk about an impeachment. Let's see what we can do to get these idiots out of their jobs. How about next November?

So, Norquist is conceeding that Obama will win reelection, but won't have the votes to attempt impeachment until 2014? He sure has a lot of confidence in his party! Maybe he realizes that the general public doesn't hold his no-tax pledge as dearly as he does.

We are doomed if we don't cut spending and Eliminate these tax cuts !!!

Grover Norquest is a LOBBYIST for Americans for Tax Reform, a privately funded advocacy group. Signing a pledge to support this group is no different that signing a pledge to support Exxon/Mobil, Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac, or any other entity that regularly lobbies Congress. I find it abhorrent that any member of Congress would sign a pledge to support a particular lobby group, regardless of political leanings.

Probably just as lucrative too. Ever wonder whose PAC is getting money?

I'm almost embarrassed for the clueless Republicans, they remind me of rats on a sinking ship.

Norquist MUST ASSUME President Obama WILL WIN reelection this year. He stated that, if the President let the Bush tax cuts expire, the Republicans will have enough votes in the Senate to impeach him in 2014. I guess Republicans know they can't win in 2012!
    • DavidJ  •  3 mths ago
Congress has to pass a law to extend the Bush tax cuts. Nobody can blame Obama if they fail to do it. Perhaps Obama might veto the law. If the Republicans have the votes, they can override his veto. That is much easier than imbeaching him in a kangaroo court. Norquist is a disgrace to America. But, that is not new news.
    • Ken  •  3 mths ago
This Norquist guy is a dangerous man and a traitor to the country. If he has all the answers why doesn't he run for president? Because he is a coward that is why, hiding behind dark curtains making deals with Republican Congressman to swear allegiance to him and cowardly rich folks who care only about keeping their money.
    • MICHAEL  •  3 mths ago
Norquist and his Muslim wife need to 'go away', permanently. And the Tea Party patriots love this guy.

How is ending a tax cut a high crime or misdomeanor?
    • Jim  •  3 mths ago
No, they couldn't !!! This question just goes to show that the Repukes DON'T UNDERSTAND THE CONSTITUTION !!! Ergo, they are not fit to lead, as their PARTY OF NO PERFOMANCE HAS SHOWN !!! No Solutions of their own, but MONKEY WRENCHING EVERY EFFORT TO MOVE THE ECONOMY FORWARD !!! IDIOTS !!!
    • Castor  •  3 mths ago
I really hope they try. It worked out so well for the GOP when it tried to impeach Clinton. Grover, when you are just plain nuts, it is not a good idea to find a white-hot spotlight to shine on yourself and your actions.
    • saki  •  3 mths ago
If the GOP were only half sane, by this time next year they would control the white house and both houses of congress. As it is now, they will be lucky to control anything. I think this makes them less than half wits.

It is strange that one man has that much power over the republicans like a shepard over sheep
