COMMENTARY | One of the most endangered people to be is an Iranian nuclear scientist. This was illustrated recently when two men on a motorcycle drove up next to a car being driven by Mostafa Ahmadi Roshan and placed a magnetic object on it.

That magnetic object, according to MSNBC, was a bomb. As the two men on the motorcycle drove away, the bomb exploded and Iran was lighter of one more nuclear scientist.

Roshan was a chemistry expert and a director of the Natanz uranium enrichment facility in central Iran. He is the latest Iranian nuclear scientist to be assassinated in what appears to be a series of hits undertaken by persons unknown. The CIA and the Israeli Mossad have denied knowledge of the executions.

There is clearly a covert effort to delay the development of an Iranian nuclear weapon. Several other Iranian nuclear scientists have been liquidated in a similar manner as Roshan. A computer virus called Stuxnet was introduced, according to the New York Times, to wreck centrifuges at the Iranian nuclear facility at Bushehr.

The Iranians have denied seeking a nuclear weapon, a denial that is almost universally disbelieved. But according to the U.K. Telegraph, Venezuela's Hugo Chavez made jokes about nuclear bombs during a state visit of Iranian dictator Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.

Someone is killing the nuclear scientists of Iran. The Mossad and the CIA have the means to do so, though understandably Israel has the most immediate motive. But the covert war being waged by someone in Iran constitutes a delaying tactic. Inevitably, sterner measures would have to be undertaken, involving bombers and cruise missiles. That will take place sooner or later unless regime change happens in Iran.

According to the Washington Post, that seems to be the goal of economic sanctions being promoted by the Obama administration. As Iran's economy continues to tank, popular discontent will rise, the theory goes, and then Iran's rulers will be forced to change their ways.

The problem is that a ruling elite that believes they are following the will of God is not likely to be responsive to popular will. Iran has proven quite adroit and brutal in crushing popular uprisings. That suggests that someone is going to have to start aiding Iranian dissidents in a big way, including with arms as necessary. That would ratchet the covert war to a new level.

Of course they'll deny it, what do you expect them to say "Yes we are going around assassinating your scientists."?
      • rustybucket55 4 mths ago
Mark Wittless called it an execution! I just bet it was a suicide!!!
      • Ali Bahrani 4 mths ago
Oh this is so very white of you. Terrorism is ok when you carry it out, huh?
      • Guest 4 mths ago
No but its ok to me and my country, i dont give a #$%$ about you or you sandy #$%$
    • Scott  •  4 mths ago
Yahoo writers and editors need to learn English. Execution is a state-sponsored official act. This man was assassinated.
      • DUB 4 mths ago
        Wasn't he murdered?
      • Midwest 4 mths ago
I would say he was found guilty of attempting crimes against humanity, genocide, mass murder, and summarily executed.
      • liberal disgust 4 mths ago
Scott , assassinations are state sponsored acts , though they are usually officially denied .
    • Tangled Web  •  4 mths ago
These Yahoo stories are getting worse by the day - the man was ASSASSINATED, the term "execution" can only be applied to a punishment meted out by a state's judicial system. Come on guys, seriously.
      • Midwest 4 mths ago
In a way, he was. He was found guilty of attempting crimes against humanity, genocide, mass murder. At any rate, good riddance.
      • Jim R 4 mths ago
Not that there is any thing wrong with assassination when it takes it take place in the context of a decalred war on terror, inside country listed State sponsor of terrorism, against guy involved in a WMD program.... right?
      • Jim R 4 mths ago
just wish these leftists like Obama and Pelosi would put country ahead of party... when a repub is in the White House they call waterboarding torture, and extraordinary rendition kidnapping.... But when a democrat is in the White House extra-judicial killing, in yemen... in pakistan... in iran is all the rage. Which side of the fence are y'all on???
    • randy  •  4 mths ago
Does anyone really think the CIA or the Mossad would take credit for the hit?
      • Gerd 4 mths ago
Iranian is hated by Soudi Arabia and they have plenty of reason for Iran to stop working on nuke. Iranian do not realize that they have more than two enemies.
      • Joe 4 mths ago
If Iran was doing that to scientists in unfriendly countries would it be called terrorism?
    • Denzil H  •  Richmond, Virginia  •  4 mths ago
Has anyone stopped to think that there is a third nation that specializes in assassinations? Settle back for a minute and let this thought sink in. Russia in days past has done very similar things. What might their angle be?
      • Robyaju 4 mths ago
Perhaps to get a nuclear contract???
      • Harry Raynack 4 mths ago
        Perhaps avoiding war!
      • Bo 4 mths ago
That's kinda scary because who would be blamed? US Israel
    • Joe Lunchbucket  •  4 mths ago
Mark Whittington, bombing innocent individuals for political purposes are terrorists acts and if it is sponsored by a government then it is properly called state terrorism.
    • kirkf  •  Honolulu, Hawaii  •  4 mths ago
I think having a magnetic mine stuck on your car would be a little more than covert. A mysterious heart attack or an auto accident would have been covert
    • boseefuss  •  San Diego, California  •  4 mths ago
Uhhhh , gee , lets see ... who would have taken such a risk and spent so much money to develop a device to kill this person , hmmmm , who could it be ????
    • Abe Stinkin  •  Los Angeles, California  •  4 mths ago
When a person is arrested, tried and sentenced to death, they are "executed".
When a person is killed outright by murderous means for political purposes, they are "assassinated".

Do these "journalists" go to school of some kind?
    • Jerry  •  Pittsford, New York  •  4 mths ago
raise your hand if you killed the scientist.
    • rustybucket55  •  Warren, Ohio  •  4 mths ago
Mark Wittless at it again!!! An execution? I'm suprised this idiot didn't call it a a suicide!!!!
    • john m  •  Beirut, Lebanon  •  4 mths ago
what kind of journalism is this , with all these insinuations . execution - Iran becomes one nuclear scientist lighter - someone is killing the scientists - this writer is trying to be smart but appears dumb , this is not a thriller , this is fact , so stop this idiotic hinting , and show facts , give me a logical analysis , not hints that Iran is killing its own scientists which clearly defies logic but goes with your hints to direct accusations in a certain direction and drive it away from the most probable suspect :Israel .
    • Yepper  •  4 mths ago
Kill a couple more.. Gas prices only went up 10 cent today..
    • j  •  Las Vegas, Nevada  •  4 mths ago
I now this is nit picking BUTTT it was NOT an execution, it WAS an assassination. There is a difference, just not to the dead guy.
    • William  •  4 mths ago
If we didn't kill that muslim PO$, we should have...!!!
    • RootieKazootie  •  4 mths ago
I agree with Amadmac--- the proper word is "assassination", not "execution".
    • Bo  •  Tampa, Florida  •  4 mths ago
Ahhhh good ole sanctions....because that worked so well with North Korea, Iraq, and Cuba.
    • legalswashbuckler  •  Colusa, California  •  4 mths ago
Don't rule out other Gulf States, with the help of Isreal or US. They have more of a stake in preventing Iran from gaining nuclear weapons and destabilizing Iran.
    • Bruce  •  Houston, Texas  •  4 mths ago
I can see other countries taking measures to prevent the Nut-case Iranians from getting nukes. Like how about every other Arab nation in the middle east? You think the Saudi's or Egyptians want a nuclear Iran?
    • Datboy  •  4 mths ago
Hmmmm lets see. Now a revenge "terrorist strike" is gonna happen to the US or Israel which will be the reason to go to War with Iran. Slick sick devils!!!
