Crews make progress in containing wildfire in geothermal energy area in Sonoma County
THE GEYSERS, Calif. (AP) -- Firefighters are making progress in containing a late-season wildfire burning in geothermal energy fields in Sonoma County.
California fire officials say the McCabe Fire has consumed about 5.2 square miles, or 3,300 acres, in the remote Geyers area, home to a complex of geothermal power plants run by Houston-based Calpine Corp.
By Sunday evening, the blaze was about 65 percent contained.
Nearly 1,700 firefighters from around the state are battling the blaze, which is burning in steep, rugged terrain near the border of Sonoma and Lake counties. The fire destroyed one structure; two firefighters sustained minor injuries.
The fire has been fueled by strong winds and dry vegetation, but more favorable weather conditions were assisting firefighting efforts.
Officials are still investigating the cause of the fire, which began early Friday.
