Critters moving away from global warming faster

WASHINGTON (AP) — Animals across the world are fleeing global warming by heading north much faster than they were less than a decade ago, a new study says.

About 2,000 species examined are moving away from the equator at an average rate of more than 15 feet per day, about a mile per year, according to new research published Thursday in the journal Science which analyzed previous studies. Species are also moving up mountains to escape the heat, but more slowly, averaging about 4 feet a year.

The species — mostly from the Northern Hemisphere and including plants — moved in fits and starts, but over several decades it averages to about 8 inches an hour away from the equator.

"The speed is an important issue," said study main author Chris Thomas of the University of York. "It is faster than we thought."

Included in the analysis was a 2003 study that found species moving north at a rate of just more than a third of a mile per year and up at a rate of 2 feet a year. Camille Parmesan of the University of Texas, who conducted that study, said the new research makes sense because her data ended around the late 1990s and the 2000s were far hotter.

Federal weather data show the last decade was the hottest on record, and 2010 tied with 2005 for the hottest year on record. Gases from the burning of fossil fuel, especially carbon dioxide, are trapping heat in the atmosphere, warming the Earth and changing the climate in several ways, according to the overwhelming majority of scientists and the world's top scientific organizations.

As the temperatures soared in the 2000s, the species studied moved faster to cooler places, Parmesan said. She pointed specifically to the city copper butterfly in Europe and the purple emperor butterfly in Sweden. The comma butterfly in Great Britain has moved more than 135 miles in 21 years, Thomas said.

It's "independent confirmation that the climate is changing," Parmesan said.

One of the faster moving species is the British spider silometopus, Thomas said. In 25 years, the small spider has moved its home range more than 200 miles north, averaging 8 miles a year, he said.

Stanford University biologist Terry Root, who wasn't part of this study but praised it as clever and conservative, points to another species, the American pika, a rabbitlike creature that has been studied in Yellowstone National Park for more than a century. The pika didn't go higher than 7,800 feet in 1900, but in 2004 they were seen at 9,500 feet, she said.

For Thomas, this is something he notices every time he returns to his childhood home in southern England. The 51-year-old biologist didn't see the egret, a rather warm climate bird, in the Cuckmere Valley while growing up. But now, he said, "All the ditches have little egrets. It was just a bizarre sight."

Thomas plotted the movement of the species and compared it to how much they would move based on temperature changes. It was a near perfect match, showing that temperature changes explain what's happening to the critters and plants, Thomas said. The match wasn't quite as exact with the movement up mountains and Thomas thinks that's because species went north instead or they were blocked from going up.

Thomas found that the further north the species live, the faster they moved their home base. That makes sense because in general northern regions are warming more than those closer to the equator..

Conservation biologist Mike Dombeck, a former U.S. Forest Service chief, said changes in where species live — especially movements up mountains — is a problem for many threatened species.

Thomas said what he's studied isn't about some far off problem.

"It's already affected the entire planet's wildlife," Thomas said in a phone interview. "It's not a matter that might happen in the lifetime of our children and our grandchildren. If you look in your garden you can see the effects of climate change already."

What does this have to do with dinosaurs or fossils?

Huh...What how do they figure this out..Moving 4' north or south away from the equator....Oh come on....Just like we should be on fire now.
No one has explained yet how the Woolly Mammoths got frozen in place for a millennia as well as that frozen man they found in the Italian Alps.By the way he was so fresh that they were able to do an autopsy on him.
It appears that the Earth is naturally thawing out to its normal temp.

But those with a political agenda or needing funding for their bogus science dept are at it again.

'Texas officials have pegged agricultural losses due to the historic drought at more than $5 billion, making it the most destructive drought in the history of the Lone Star State.

The 12 months that ended July 31 were the driest in Texas history, and 2011 is on the verge of becoming the driest calendar year since records were first kept in the late 19th century, State Climatologist John Nielson-Gammon said.'
What is there about this that you DON'T understand?

Another ice age is coming perhaps! Maybe the globalist should get with the program!!! LOL, I love the globalist/progressives/environmentalist crazies...they lack common sense and blow it out of boths sides.

Recent studies show that so-called scientist will publish any #$%$ in order to keep the grant money flowing.

Global warming is not the reason we haven't had rattlesnakes in West Texas this summer. We're in a drought. When it rains, the snakes will return. And I didn't need to spend thousands of dollars or get a grant to study and verify this observation. But somebody got a Ph.D out of chasing butterflies.

you sond like a 2000 year old goat herder. mwahahahahaLOL
        just kidding man...enjoy..LOL

Hmm drought? Not global warming though, right? I have bugs in my garden I have never seen before!
      • Dan 9 mths ago
Global warming causes increased rainfall. And that's a fact!

Nice to see nature adapting to change just like it has for millenia ... and without any liberal help!

      How is that possible???

      "animals across the world are moving north".. Question;
Wouldn't animals in the souther hemisphere move south?
      This study is flawed.
      • JOHNd 9 mths ago
Point taken. But your comment that "the study is flawed" is unwarranted. You are merely complaining about a careless statement by the popular science writer, who casually summarized the study's conclusions, not mentioning that the work was mostly confined to the northern hemisphere until a little later in his piece.
      • Eric1 9 mths ago
The ARTICLE says that animals are fleeing the equator, and in the Northern hemisphere, that means NORTH!

        Yes how "Christian" of you.
      • Hey, you! 9 mths ago
Only an incredibly narrow-minded religious bigot could make a comparison between liberals and satanists. Are you sure you qualify?
      • Ted 9 mths ago
Actually, they seem to be fleeing the bible thumping tea baggers of the south for the more rational north.

I grow tired of trying to explain to uneducated people that a scientific theory is as close to fact as it can be. The term theory is much more iron clad term in the science world than the next door neighbor at your trailer park who says "hey I've got a theory" who is in fact misusing the term "theory." Whether you like it or not the evidence overwhelmingly supports climate change theory. Scientists who deny this are sell outs to corporations. These scientists who sell out often find themselves ridiculed because no one of intelligence wants to be around people who sell out (i.e. car salesmen, realtors, insurance salesmen).
      • ThaBullDawg 9 mths ago
I guess hypothesis would be better than saying I have a theory.
      • Dan 9 mths ago
Agreed. It seems that your average person believes that a theory is something that is "less certain" than a fact, when in reality, it's not part of some "hierarchy" with fact being the "best" and theory being "second best". They don't understand that a "theory" (in science) is an explanation of how a fact works, and that it has nothing to do with our everyday word "theory". A scientific theory can never graduate to the status of "fact". One describes (a fact) and one explains (a theory). They're totally different things that work together.

Take the "germ theory" for example. Nobody would doubt that streptococcus causes strep throat, however, this is a theory -- because it explains *how* strep throat is caused. Even though it's PROVEN that streptococcus causes strep throat, it will never be called a "fact", because it is an explanation of how the fact (strep throat) is caused. Therefore, it will always be called a "theory" because it's an explanation of how a fact works.

do not get discouraged Tom. Science will always prevail. The bible is not even a theory. I do not know how to classify this book thats why i put it beside my three little pig book. mwhaahahahahaLOL

Has Al Gore moved any farther north? Last I heard, he is staying put. Did he just turn up his air conditioning? Hey, get used to it. We will adapt. We will adapt to be a bit un-comfortable.

Hey RW! Go stand barefoot on a 145 to 165 degree surface of a man made blacktop road at noon and think how If you put all the blacktop in the USA into one large lot,.you would have a parking lot the size of Georgia. Then go put your hand on one of the manmade 750,000,000 registered motor vehicles in the world when the engine is running at 210 degrees. Then go sit on the nice cool grass and think about how the gases from the burning of fossil fuel, especially carbon dioxide, are trapping all that heat in the atmosphere. Not to mention things like tar roofs, etc, etc, etc, etc, etc, etc,
    • The Truth  •  9 mths ago
Scientists agree that the sum total of the current 100+ year warming period, is six tenths of one single degree..... that's it. And while this article states that the 2000's have been warmer than the '90's, UN IPCC emails actually caught the very people who are crying global warming the loudest, openly talking about how to hide the fact that the past decade had actually been COOLER! Global warming/climate change ideologues constantly try to keep the hard facts from the general population...... the hard facts don't lie, the hard facts don't propose $646 billion in new energy taxes, and the hard facts don't buy $9 million oceanfront mansions with the proceeds from their blockbuster global warming book and movie.

this is a water glass half-full or half empty question... as are they fleeing 'global warming' or are they simply moving into freed up habitats previously hostile to life... with all the lands being made available, open to exploration you'd think more 'scientists' would be exploring to see whats being revealed versus exploring to lament the doom of global warming...

with the tundras thawing out what can be found there that hasn't been known since the ice ages or with 'global warming' the weather patterns might change in such a way, that the Sahara desert becomes a forest of habitats...

during the days and times of the dinosaurs this planet was much warmer and far more humid than its been for millenniums, why is out of the question that the changes are primarily 'caused' by natural cosmic, solar and planetary changes...

why the need to say its all the activities of humankind since the beginning of industrial age that is the apparent primary cause. why is it that it seems only the media, famous hollywood rich types and celebrity politicians and scientists saying these things seem to be the ones preaching the doomsday days of peril sermons... I thought it was only the extreme right the loved to preach and sermonize the end of days

Why can't Tea Baggers leave for Canada due to global warming?
    • RW  •  9 mths ago
There is Global Warming but it is not man induced--it is sun induced. The sun has phases and cycles. It is not constant!! The polar caps are also shrinking on mars. Nature will take its course, with or without man.
    • Spot  •  9 mths ago
I guess animals are smarter than humans, huh? I'm heading north now.
    • Oleg the Tumor  •  9 mths ago
So is this story supposed to prove that Global Warming is not theory, but fact?
Isn't that like "leading the witness"? This story has so much spin the print blurs.
    • Shirle  •  9 mths ago
This is more hype ...I dont believe it for one minute.
    • Paulee  •  9 mths ago
More garbage about global warming. When are these idiots going to get over the fact that if it is going to happen we can't stop it now matter what we do. It has happened throughout time and will continue to happen. Read about the ice age and how it evolved and how long it took to get out of it. We moved out of it when the earth changed through no fault nor helping from man. It just happened. To think that we can impede or interfere with nature is an insult to both nature and God. These secular bozos would like to blame all of us for the so called global warming. Try to make us feel guilty and all. What a bunch of eggheaded bozos.
