WHAT'S NEWS

  • Pres. Obama, "addressing yet another memorial gathering after a deadly mass shooting, said Sunday evening that he senses 'a creeping resignation' in the United States that homicidal lunacy like the Washington Navy Yard massacre 'is somehow the new normal.' • "With a week left to hammer out a deal to avoid a government shutdown, some lawmakers seem resigned -- if not rushing -- to that end." Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) "and fellow tea party conservatives on Sunday said ... Obama and his Democratic allies would be to blame if they don't accede to demands to strike the national health care law" (AP).

Hotline editors weigh in on the stories that drive the day

• Hillary Clinton is recognizing she can't run a WH '16 campaign as a third Obama term. "I had a very positive set of interactions [with Obama], even when I disagreed, which obviously occurred, because obviously I have my own opinions, my own views," she said in New York Magazine. That's a change from her May interview alongside Obama on "60 Minutes," where she tied herself as closely to the White House as possible -- that is, when the president's approval ratings were much stronger.

• As a GOP governor. Crist wasn't much of a Jeb Bush ally when it came to education reform. But he's found it politically convenient to ally himself with Jeb's education legacy to attack Rick Scott for opposing Common Core standards.

• PA Dems are wondering why Treas. Rob McCord still hasn't officially entered the GOV race. While those outside McCord's circle can speculate about whether he's having second thoughts or simply enjoying the drawn-out drama surrounding his likely entrance into the race, one thing is becoming increasingly clear: the field of Dems vying to take on the vulnerable Gov. Tom Corbett (R) is crowded and filled with uncertainty.

• Rick Snyder for president? The MI gov. dismissed a candidacy as a "distraction" this weekend, but also said he hoped he was a "reasonable model for people to look at across the country." Keep an eye on the tough nerd.

HAIR OF THE DOG

  • "It's total atrophy. We're earning our 11 percent popularity [rating]. ... It's easier to talk about Obamacare than the major sources of our problems" -- Sen. Johnny Isakson (R-GA) (Washington Post).

  • Rep. Paul Ryan (R-WI) "will write a book on the state of the conservative movement, according to the publisher Twelve, an imprint of Grand Central Publishing" (CNN).

  • "I don't think even he is, you know, focused on that right now" -- Ex-Sec/State Hillary Clinton (D), asked whether she and Bill Clinton have discussed her running for WH '16 (New York Magazine).

  • "Scandal at Clinton Inc.: How Doug Band drove a wedge through a political dynasty" (New Republic).

PLAY OF THE DAY!

  • NYC Mayor '13 nominee Bill de Blasio (D) is a Boston Red Sox fan.

  • The winner is Steven Bergsbaken, and here's his Swizzle Challenge: "This Washington Nationals player's hitting streak ended Thursday night. Name the player and the number of consecutive games in which he got a hit?" The 2nd correct e-mailer gets to submit the next question.

"It's like when you meet somebody at a party and they look over your shoulder to see who else is there, and you want to talk to them about something that's really important; in fact, maybe you came to the party to talk to that particular person, and they just want to know what's next" -- Hillary Clinton, on why it's too early to start talking about WH '16 (New York Magazine).

...CHASER

Band and Hillary Clinton aide Huma Abedin "were known to show up at parties together," where they "had an ingenious method of collecting intelligence on each other's behalf. Abedin would sidle up to someone in Bill's camp and, in a confiding tone, make a disparaging remark about Band. If it was reciprocated, she would relay the criticisms to Band and he would do the same for her, says someone who fell for this technique" (New Republic).
