WASHINGTON, April 17, 2013 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- On October 17, 2011, CTIA and participating wireless providers announced a voluntary initiative that would provide consumers with free usage alerts to help them avoid unexpected overage charges. The four alerts were for voice, data, messaging and international service and were added to the "Consumer Code for Wireless Service," which is the industry's set of policies and practices to help consumers make informed choices when selecting their wireless service plans. Since 2003, the "Consumer Code for Wireless Service" has been updated to ensure it reflects the industry's innovations and consumers' needs and expectations.Participating providers agreed to implement two out of the four alerts by October 17, 2012 andall of them met that deadline. By April 17, 2013, the participating providers agreed to have implemented all of the applicable alerts for their customers.
Today, CTIA President and CEO Steve Largent released the following statement commending the participating providers for meeting the usage alert deadline:
"I am pleased that all of the participating wireless providers, which cover approximately 97 percent of U.S. wireless subscribers, have met the consumer usage alerts deadline. The U.S. wireless industry is constantly working to deliver the best possible consumer experience. Our voluntary usage alert efforts are an additional example of how we work as an industry to ensure consumers have the information they need."
