Cuba embargo has its detractors, supporters

Washington's 50-year-old economic embargo of Cuba, which the island's leaders refer to as a "blockade," has its supporters and detractors. Here's what some people have said about it:

    ___

"We know the blockade will continue and there will be increased financing of efforts to turn a handful of mercenaries into a destabilizing opposition, but that doesn't take away the dream of a revolutionary people like ours, instructed, armed and free, which will never stop defending itself." — Cuban President Raul Castro, in a speech to lawmakers Dec. 23, 2011.

    ___

"In addition to imposing economic pressure on the Castro regime and holding it accountable for actions against U.S. interests, the embargo is a moral stance against the brutal dictatorship. Over the last 50 years, the embargo has served as a constant form of solidarity with the Cuban people. I am ever hopeful that a Cuban Spring will arrive as long as we maintain and enforce policies which support the freedom-loving will of the Cuban people." — U.S. Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen, a Cuban-American Republican from South Florida and chairwoman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee.

    ___

"The blockade affects everything and everyone, although it doesn't really affect me personally so much because I have my son in the United States and he sends me everything, even money. But in this country, anyone who doesn't get dollars from the United States gets completely squashed by the blockade. I'm sick right now and undergoing chemotherapy treatment. It's always a big pain to find medicines. My son has to send me a lot of them." — Annia Rosales, 64, of Havana.

    ___

"(It's) completely necessary. The government there hasn't changed at all. ... There's only one party. And when the younger (leaders) come up, they push them aside." — Miami resident and retired landscaper Rufino Alvarez, 75, who spent 16 years in prison in Cuba for conspiring against the government.

    ___

"The embargo has been an absolute failed policy for 50 years. ... That is what has enabled the Cuban government to maintain the status quo. Everything is blamed on the embargo, from the lack of basic civil rights to political liberties. ... The only thing it has allowed is Cuba to maintain the status quo and every (U.S.) political candidate to get the votes from Florida and New Jersey by having coffee and talking about Cuba. The embargo has nothing to do with foreign policy. It has everything to do with domestic presidential politics." — Alfredo Duran, an exile who fought at the failed Bay of Pigs invasion of 1961 but stunned many of his fellow exiles in 2001 when he returned to Cuba and met with Castro.

    ___

"I think the blockade is propaganda from the government and in reality the only blockade here is internal, and that does have a tremendous effect on all Cubans who live in this country." — Marta Blanco, 74, of Havana.

If AP journalists were not afraid of Ileana Ros-Lehtinen, who succeeded the late Jorge Mas Canosa as the dictator of the radical Cuban-exile elite, perhaps more civil discussions on the U. S. embargo against Cuba would be forthcoming in the Land of the Free and the Home of the Brave (which it needs to be again). All recent polls, including a major new one this week, reveal that a vast majority of Cuban Americans favor an end to the embargo, but they too are victimized by the elite radicals. As a democracy loving American, I am ashamed each October when the UN vote on the embargo reveals that all of America's friends around the world are also ashamed of the embargo...designed over a half century ago to get rid of Castro, who is 85 and will die of old age leaving behind a huge legacy, thanks to things such as the embargo, as one of his prime revolutionary idols Dilma Rousseff, the President of mighty Brazil, stated last week when she visited Fidel, whom she called her hero and her inspiration. Why didn't the AP report on that important meeting instead of viewing Cuba only through the self-serving, revengeful prism of Ileana Ros-Lehtinen, who perhaps should do something for Americans, including Cuban Americans, in the U. S. Congress instead of using her position to get rich and try to recapture her native Cuba.

Are you kidding me? We trade with Viet Nam, China, Russia, Japan, and former enemies. Why are we so afraid of using the "American Way." Open Cuba to tourists and in three years you'll have a McDonalds on every corner and a WalMart in every town. Coming Soon: Disney Havana!

They're more honest than the U.S. government. They have one party and call it one party. We have one political party but call it two parties. Come to the People's Republic of Illinois and you'll see what I'm talking about. Free enterprise is suppressed by increasingly high taxes and our "rulers" in Springfield and Chicago. Take a tour of the block where the speaker of the Illinois House has his "manor house" amongst the tiny bungalows of "the ruled". Come to where our present "governor" who is in there by default because his predecessor is on his way to jail; has just approved a bill to put more "spy" cameras near parks and schools in Chicago, to facilitate the rulers sucking more money from motorists in the name of safety because they mismanaged the money of "the ruled" and try to blame someone else. Politics in this country is all a charade. At least with the communists, you know where you stand. They serve you S%#& and you know it's S%#&. In this country and this state they serve you S%#& and try to tell you it's a delicious hors d' oeuvre and you're supposed to smile as you choke it down.
