‘Cuckoo’ Comedy Based On UK Series Gets NBC Pilot Order
Cuckoo, an adaptation of the breakout BBC Three comedy series starring Andy Samberg, has received a pilot order by NBC. The single-camera project, from Lionsgate TV and the original series’ producer Roughcut Television, originally was set up at NBC
during the 2013-14 development season with a put pilot commitment. Cuckoo is the story of a middle-class family whose daughter comes back from a summer abroad married to a charming but infuriating eccentric named Cuckoo, much to her father’s annoyance.
UK writers Robin French and Kieron Quirke, who created the BBC series, wrote the adaptation with The Simpsons veteran Tim Long, who serves as showrunner. French, Quirke and Long executive produce with the original series’ exec producers Ash Atalla. In the British series, an English girl returns home from her post-college gap year with an eccentric hippie American husband named Cuckoo, played by Samberg in his first post-Saturday Night Live TV gig, before he signed on for Fox’s Brooklyn Nine-Nine. The second season starred Taylor Launter.
This is the third adaptation of an Atalla-produced British comedy series to get a greenlight at NBC, following The Office and The IT Crowd. The network is taking another stab at developing an American version of IT Crowd this season with Bill Lawrence producing the project, which has received a put pilot commitment.
