Cyndi Lauper Provides Needed Support with True Colors LGBT Shelter

COMMENTARY | Cyndi Lauper announced she will be building a homeless shelter for lesbian/gay/bisexual/transgenders in an effort to help the large population of LGBTs who reside in New York City and are homeless. In the Big Apple, 40 percent of the homeless are LGBT, according to Zap2It. Construction of the facility begins Thursday at West 154th Street and Frederick Douglass Boulevard in Manhattan. It will be named "True Colors" after Lauper's hit single from the 1980s.

Lauper says the residents of the shelter will pay rent based on income and have access to job assistance as well as social programs to help get them back on their feet. According to Zap2It, she stated in a press release, "Our primary goal is to provide a physically and emotionally safe and supportive environment that will empower our young residents to be the self-loving, happy and successful individuals they were meant to be."

Why does this segment of the population need its own homeless shelter? The reason is unfortunate: LGBTs still face an uphill battle as they are subject to prejudice and violence. On the streets, many are subject to horrific attacks based on their identity.

We've not come very far in the nearly 13 years since the infamous attack on Matthew Shepard took place near Laramie, Wyo. The University of Wyoming student was tortured and subsequently murdered because of his sexual orientation.

In 2009, legislation that Shepard's mother had fought for for over 10 years was finally signed into law by President Obama. It's called the Hate Crimes Prevention Act, also known as the Matthew Shepard Act. You would think most people would be in agreement that heinous crimes and violence should not be perpetrated against anyone for any reason, but there are more than a few members of the GOP who were staunchly against it.

Hateful attitudes continue to prevail, which is the reason of the need for a shelter like "True Colors." Some of our politicians are the leaders in our society who allow this atrocity to go on. GOP candidate Michele Bachmann is one of those members. She strongly opposed the legislation because she felt that the act would protect pedophiles from hate crimes.

It is that kind of ignorance that is propelling statistics of violence against LGBTs through the roof. Many young LGBTs even lose support of their loved ones at home, winding up on the streets only to then be subjected to mistreatment and violent acts against them.

Lauper should be lauded for her efforts in helping this segment of the population, and all of us who don't believe in attacking those who are different for any reason need to remember to take a stand against this moronic behavior.

Homeless (ness is actally my biggest charity, my face is well known at the homeless compound here in Phoenix. I was there last night eating dinner with them for the first time in yerars.

I go there on a regular basis & they know me (I don't eat dinner there if I can help it) , I hand out cigarrettes & money about 2 times a week. I get a thrill out of giving money to someone reguardless of what they look like or their orientation, it helps me get over the extreme prejudice I used to feel towards bums.

I can remembrer overcomming my inner feelings giving money to a guy there that has blue tattoos (and a very bad tattoo job I might add) all over his face, now hes one of my closest friends & I see him often all over Phoenix.

I am still on the fence as to whether or not your comment is serious. I read it and I keep waiting for the punchline.

Part of the free housing is mandatory counseling in an effort to help cure them of their homosexuality and other mental issues. Awesome idea.
      • Morey 8 mths ago
Yea, but it's highly incurable. I hear the cure rate (even reprogramming) is only 10-15% successful. Lesbians and gays should stay in the closet, do their evil deeds in quiet, and keep this crap out of the news. I cant believe anyone has ever given it attention and merit. It's about as righteous as say wife swappers would be, just some sinful deeds and perverted practices that people like to do to each other! It is NOT a recognizable lifestyle choice, it's wickedness plain and simple! Like debauchery!

there is no cure because it is not a disease! You cant make a heterosexual gay either. Nothing to cure. I will admit there are some who do it as a fad, mainly the women, but trust me, I have met many who wished they were not like that but cant help who they are attracted. You c

Morey...You said they are evil because their sexual preferences, but tell me? What kind of evil are you?...To me any person who disrespect or have negative views about others for no reason have some kind of mental illness.

Do you fools actually believe that 40% of the homeless are queers? From a 1-2% population? That's padded stats if you ask me.

        You're a retard.

I have no problem with this endeavor, but I am not sure why it is necessary. How would other residents of a homeless shelter know if one were gay? Gay or straight, who is having sex in homeless shelters? Do we need gay hospitals, too?

K.C. Dermody: I have all the respect in the world for Cyndi Lauper and applaud what she's doing for homeless LGBT people. But why don't you write an objective story about this and not use it as a not-so-hidden agenda for bad-mouthing the GOP. I'm sure the vast majority of Republicans do not have negative feelings about this humanitarian project.

Reading all these hateful comments makes me embarrassed to be an American. We are just a country of spoiled little brats.
    • Ann  •  8 mths ago
You people are really dumb! There's millions of places for straight homeless people already in NY ...straight homeless people don't get kicked out of their homes like Gay kids do. Cyndi is actually doing something nice and some of you are critizing her for it? Thanks Cyndi for making this world a better place!

Cyndi, has the right idea, maybe other celebrities will follow her lead, instead of just donating the money, follow exactly where it goes.
