DA won't release Fullerton officers' names

SANTA ANA, Calif. (AP) — Prosecutors declined to release the names of six Fullerton police officers involved in a violent fight that left a mentally ill homeless man dead, citing concerns for their safety because of the "significant" number of threats made against them, according to a newspaper report Wednesday.

The Orange County Register, which sought the officers' names under California's open-records law, reported that the District Attorney's office listed 19 examples of threats made after Thomas Kelly died in a confrontation that was captured on camera and sparked international outrage.

The threats included a call to dispatchers warning that a bomb will go off at the police building and a letter that stated Thomas was "murdered" and that the officers deserved the death penalty. Prosecutors also considered an entry in a local blog, in which someone called for the release of the officers' contact information and addresses, a threat.

Travis Kiger, who maintains the Friends for Fullerton's Future blog, said he didn't think the entry was a threat.

"They release the names of suspected criminals every single day," he told the Register. "I don't understand in this case how it would be any different."

The D.A.'s office, which is investigating Thomas' death, said it will release the officers' names when it decides whether to press charges.

Thomas got into a confrontation on July 5 with the officers who were responding to reports that someone had been burglarizing cars at a downtown transit station. Thomas, who suffered severe head and neck injuries, was taken off life support five days later.

The incident was captured from a distance by a bystander with a cell phone camera and surveillance video from a bus captured upset witnesses telling the bus driver that officers had beaten and repeatedly used a stun gun on Thomas as he cried out for help.

These Fullerton police officers do indeed need to be prosecuted for homicide. You mean to tell me five highly trained officers could not restrain one less than well nourished young man so that he was not a danger to himself or others? These cops were out of control. They need to pay the price for thier actions. How long does it take for the D.A. to make the decision to prosecute? If this were you or I, we would already have been arraigned. A needless death as a result of an unbridled display of violence on the behalf of our so called "protectors" on a disabled person MUST BE DEALT WITH TO THE FULL EXTENT OF THE LAW. Homicide under the color of law is beyond sickening! This young man had to have been known to the police, I am sure. He was no stranger at the transit center, I saw him there many times. He was never threatening or intimidating in any way. What of these so called accusations of his burglarizing autos in the parking lot? I have heard of no substantiation of this. Fullerton has an uncaring and unsymphathetic mayor who should be removed from office. This goes way beyond Fullerton police need to be re-trained, or get sensitivity training. That would be much too late for this young man. This must be kept on the front page, until these cops have been dealt with in a court of law, and justice is served for this young man.

These cops are scum...thugs...the badge they wear is a trust with respect between us and them...this prosecutor however is probably right but if I beat a man to death in the street my name would be all over the front page. these scum bags should be jailed for their protection with out pay if the prosecutor wants to protect them......this situation is sicking

      Jay Cicinelli was there
      Officer Kenton Hampton was there
      Officer Manny Ramos was there
      Officer Joe Wolfe was there
      Officer James Blatney

The sixth officer would have been a sargent called to the scene due to the use of a Taser. There are two patrol sargents not reporting for duty at the moment who may have been on duty that night.

I heard an interview with the father of the victim. His father saw the video made on the cell phone where his son was screaming "Dad! Dad!" while several policeman were killing him. This is what this man will leave with till the rest of his life. With the voice of his son crying for help. Now you tell me what this killers deserve?

This story makes me sick. I understand the need to restrain him. That was done in one minute. The image of his face and it's mutilation will haunt me. Someone must be held accountable.

Being up to the DA to decide whether charges will be pressed doesn't sound right. And I know that there is an independent investigation happening, but it is not to search for criminality of this incident, but rather to research Fullerton PD procedures, AND the investigator is being paid by the city, which sort of makes them an employee of the city. There needs to be a completely independent investigation of this murder which probably means the Feds need to step in, but as of yet, that is not happening.

so why didn't the bystander call 911 and get more cops there instead of just video taping???

More cops than the 5 squad cars already there and beating him to death? Brilliant idea.

        Why? Don't you get it?

Your question makes it evident that you are not familiar with this incident at all.

This is just so common. They must be held accountable.

"a letter that stated Thomas was "murdered" and that the officers deserved the death penalty." they do. They should all be put to death for this. They are put in charge of protecting and serving the people, and instead they murdered a mentally ill man. Death penalty sounds right to me.
