A nervous dad-to-be who had rigged-up a camera to capture the early moments of his fiancee’s labour ended up delivering his own daughter - and it was all on film.

Martin Boyce had to turn emergency midwife after it became clear his fiancee, Holly Dawson, would not get to the hospital on time.

Baby Belle was born safely in the early hours of Sunday morning on the couple’s living room floor.

“Its amazing that I’ve had such a big part to play in her life already,” said beaming father Martin, 35.

“Rather than just holding Holly’s hand I was able to deliver my own child, which is just the most incredible feeling.

“It’s something I’ll be able to tell her when she grows up - and it’s all captured on camera as well.

“We had always wanted to film the birth and all the gear was in the car ready, but I had to get it out and I ran in and clamped the camera to the desk.

“I just had time to set it up and was able to capture the miracle moment of our baby being born.”

The drama started around 3:30am.

The couple had gone to bed on Saturday evening but Holly, 24, woke up in the early hours to say she thought the baby was on the way.

Realising they would not make it to the hospital, the quick-thinking couple phoned midwives at Leicester General, who were able to talk the expectant parents through the birth.

They also called their parents and Martin’s mum Polly, 60, a nurse who lives nearby, rushed round the house to offer support.

Martin, who works for Leicester Fire Service, added: “I realised we were not going to get to hospital on time. Holly’s contractions were about 15 seconds apart.

"My mum who is an NHS nurse noticed she was in the later stages of labour so we got her on the lounge floor.

"I was comforting Holly while my mum was down the business end and then she told me the baby’s head was crowning - but I caught her in my hands.

"I was telling her ‘come on Holly, you can do it’ and within two big pushes Belle was out and in my arms.

"It was a bit scary as it was some time before Belle moved and cried, but it was fine.

Belle was born around an hour after the couple had called the midwives.

Immediately after the drama, Belle, who weighed 7lbs 12 oz was taken to hospital but is now back home.

“I could not have done it without my mum and Holly’s mother Sharon has been amazing as well,” added Martin.

“I certainly won’t forget the birth of our first child.”
