Go Daddy Becomes Example in SOPA Backlash

Go Daddy is backpedaling over its support of the "Stop Online Piracy Act," or SOPA, that's working its way through Congress. It may be too little, too late. But is Go Daddy being unfairly boycotted for its involvement in the bill just because it's perhaps the most visible and largest domain registrar?

SOPA, also known as HR 3261, essentially gives U.S. law enforcement and copyright holders more room to fight online trafficking in copyrighted intellectual property and counterfeit goods.

The original bill would pave the way for the Department of Justice and copyright holders to seek court orders against Web sites that infringe on copyrights. SOPA opponents say the bill amounts to Internet censorship and tramples First Amendment rights.

As part of the firestorm, Wikipedia co-founder Jimmy Wales tweeted that Go Daddy's position on SOPA was not acceptable. News reports indicate that more than 70,000 domain names moved away from Go Daddy last week in response to its support of SOPA. And with a Reddit user working to organize Dump Go Daddy Day on Dec. 29, the bleeding could grow worse.

    Changing Tunes

Go Daddy issued a formal statement on Dec. 23 hoping to stem the tide of defectors. Go Daddy admits that it initially supported the bill. In fact, Go Daddy and its general counsel, Christine Jones, said they worked with federal lawmakers for months to help craft revisions to legislation first introduced some three years ago.

"Fighting online piracy is of the utmost importance, which is why Go Daddy has been working to help craft revisions to this legislation -- but we can clearly do better," said Warren Adelman, Go Daddy's newly appointed CEO. "It's very important that all Internet stakeholders work together on this. Getting it right is worth the wait. Go Daddy will support it when and if the Internet community supports it."

Go Daddy said Jones has fought to express the concerns of the entire Internet community and to improve the bill by proposing changes to key defined terms, limitations on DNS filtering to ensure the integrity of the Internet, more significant consequences for frivolous claims and specific provisions to protect free speech.

    Stuck in the Middle

Now Go Daddy competitors are getting in on the battle, perhaps sensing an opportunity to capture some of the momentum from the bad PR. Namecheap is accusing Go Daddy of blocking name transfers to its servers.

"Go Daddy appears to be returning incomplete WHOIS information to Namecheap, delaying the transfer process. This practice is against ICANN rules," the company wrote on its blog. "We at Namecheap believe that this action speaks volumes about the impact that informed customers are having on Go Daddy's business.

"It's a shame that Go Daddy feels they have to block their (former) customers from voting with their dollars. We can only guess that at Go Daddy, desperate times call for desperate measures."

Zeus Kerravala, principal analyst at ZK Research, sees this as a sign of how competitive the name registrar landscape has grown. Go Daddy, because of its advertising, is the most visible domain name registrar and is now being targeted, in part, because of its popularity.

"It's very easy to transfer a domain name to a new supplier," Kerravala said. "So far as SOPA, the DOJ needs to figure out what they want to enforce and what they don't. Technically it is a violation of First Amendment rights, but they can't go unmonitored completely."

This bill is an absolute POWER GRAB. It will allow the government to BREAK DNS, which is the backbone of the ENTIRE internet. The best part is, for the companies and shady government officials involved? They dont even need to PROVE that the website in question has done anything illegal...it just has to be ACCUSED of doing something illegal. This is NOTHING but greedy corporations and frightened government officials seeking to CENSOR the internet...Nothing more.

and, if all else fails, you can just lobby and have the site taken down. money talks, #$%$ walks.

And even these Congressman are not well advised. On one hand Government entities have a mandatory ordinance to all organizations to move on with DNSSEC implementation, and on the other hand this HR 3261 proposal that breaks what was recommended. A shame, the Congressman and all who back this proposal should resign to avoid further embarrassment and unnecessary waste of money and resources.

People voting with their dollars is the only voting that companies understand. Petition all you want, they don't care. Stop giving them money and they start paying attention.

I'm all for closing sites selling counterfeit goods, but "file sharing" is just too vague of a term to regulate and the government has too much power already.

before you back the bill you need to read it
and see what they call piracy
you wont be allowed to post a vid of your family if a radio is playing or your a pirate
tons of bad wording in the bill that calls about anything they want piracy
this bill doesnt stop piracy ...it allows companys to sue for what ever they want ...even stupid home videos that have 0 retail value and take nothing from the corp greedy grubs

omg, do you even know what intellectual property means..... copyrighted material such as movies, music are banned... not our freaking home videos
      • Josh 5 mths ago
Home videos too if they include songs, etc. Even if on accident. Read more

Hey Theseeker, they can jail/imprison you for 5 years for posting your OWN home movie, if there is a song playing in the background that is "copyrighted". Yes they CAN ban your own home videos

No, it's not an "unfair boycotting."
Any company who does not directly and strongly oppose the SOPA bill, along with all of the E-PARASITE bills, might as well openly admit to being opposed to freedom of speech in all of its forms, and voice their desire to only have posted on the internet what they want posted.
These bills are draconian, plain and simple, and GoDaddy should be rebelled against for even minor support of the bill.

I think the author's expertise stops with which end of the mouse to hold, let alone what a registrar is, the SOPA, or that NO other ISPs or registrars are supporting it (other than like Comcast, who has other interests) . She certainly spins SOPA as banal, sensible as the supporters want, instead of mentioning the details why it is so evil of a money & power/control grab. At least she used a spell checker.

the thing that #$%$ me right off about SOPA is that corporations can lobby to have sites closed. there is no freedom of speech there. plus, the whole #$%$ bill is pretty vague about what constitutes piracy.
      • laethyn 5 mths ago
And by "corporations" you mean "anyone"? And by "lobby" you mean "ask"?

Simple fact: If this bill was in place 5 years ago, yahoo, facebook, myspace, youtube, amazon ... all gone. Any website that allows comments puts themselves at risk, because they are then held responsible for anything posted on their site.

Don't like youtube? Post a bunch of copyrighted videos. Don't like amazon? Fill up their comments and forums with copyrighted text.

the bill is sponsored by music and movie executives in three piece suits, life in california is not plush enough for them.

If Go Daddy had a history of cautious investigation befor just blocking domains accused of wrongdoing I dont think theyed have nearly as many defections. But they blatantly came out and said they approve of the Government getting involved in internet issues. Thats just wrong thinking ....Bad move, they lose.

So if they pass the bill, how are they gonna put China in jail?
    • Anthony  •  5 mths ago
Network solutions was first. But they were too formal for most. Then came this idiot running go daddy, killing endangered elephants while on vacation, increasing sales by shaking #$%$ at the public, and now supporting censorship. It's sad that Kim Kardashian or a murder story has thousands of comment and this only a few. Just shows that most people don't know what is going on. Hope they realize before it's too late.

Go Daddy sucks. Their support system sucks. They took advantage of their costumers. They cancel orders they wrongly place on your behalf and withdraw their service without giving your money back. I support a world wide boycott of Go Daddy

Go Daddy lacks good customer support. The technicians talk down on you and expect you to do everything. Their SSL support system sucks and doesn't give the customer the ability to quickly change its security code to adjust its domains. They promise you five websites (they count subnets with the same domains) and just give you one. They are too expensive and they don't have enough technical support for customers. They are an organization culture of me me me and their high paying employees are not making this any better. They market their products using strippers dressed in short..shorts. Glad they are failing
      • JD 5 mths ago
@anomaly...couldn't agree MORE with you. I thought I was one of the few having "issues" with their "customer service". I spoke to one of their senior reps who was a COMPLETE DOUCHE!!! Called the next day to get a refund and the second representative stated the first rep WAS A DOUCHE!!! I ended all business with them. HURRAY!!!

We the consumers need to go past Go Daddy and hit each of the politicians that support this bill with our votes and each of the companies that back it the same way we hit Go Daddy. Send them a strong message that we wont have the internet censored.
    • propaganda  •  5 mths ago
They will use all types of excuse just to promote CENSORSHIP; you can kiss your Constitution good-bye!
    • John  •  Salem, Virginia  •  5 mths ago
Wait, they can't have their cake and eat it too?
    • IronRider  •  Brush Prairie, Washington  •  5 mths ago
its much more sinister than that. The truth is the mega giants that are pushing this bill (CBS, Microsoft, Etc..) are the ones who pushed the piracy software on the market. Not only did they push it, they hosted it. Look it up.

SOPA sucks and their support for it is just indicative of how they run their business
    • Shadow  •  Hood River, Oregon  •  5 mths ago
BOYCOTT GO DADDY ! ! ! Let's show them they cannot support things that the people do not support... stop corporate America NOW.... they are only backpeddling because they did not want to lose their business... FIRE THEM NOW! We are close to a small victory and every victory counts. They are trying to stop the transfers and is VIOLATING ICANN RULES.... ICANN what is the fine for this???? Fine them, Fire them... now is the time to seize the bull by the rains and choke it to death!

      SOPA...
Brought to you by the same kind of greedy tools who tried to make people pay a royalty every time they watch a movie that they already purchased.
The same kind of people who tried to make it a felony to record a TV show or song off the radio.
The same people who bundled spyware on "enhanced" CD's that would tell them if you tried to rip it.
The same people who introduced DRM protections that many CD players at the time couldn't read or only let the CD's be played in certain brands of CD player.

Oh sure, they sell it as providing the power to stop online piracy. But what about a few years down the road when say people from certain areas are blocked from seeing political opponents websites. Or say Google throws some money at their lobbyists to get approval to pull some wires and block access to Yahoo on networks it owns.
We're headed toward the same corrupted iron fist control of the internet in this country as is currently seen in Iran and China.
