Go Daddy, an Internet domain registrar, is sold

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — The parent company of GoDaddy.com, a top registrar of Internet domain names, has been sold to a group of private investment firms for $2.25 billion, a person familiar with the transaction told The Associated Press.

Go Daddy Group Inc.'s sale to KKR, Silver Lake and Technology Crossover Ventures comes as the company expects to top $1.1 billion in revenue this year because expanding Internet use has fueled the creation of more websites and the "domains" needed to help find them. Go Daddy announced the sale late Friday. A person close to the transaction, who asked to remain anonymous because of not being authorized to speak publicly, told the AP the sale price.

A fact sheet accompanying the release indicated that Go Daddy's revenue has grown by more than 20 percent in each of the past several years.

The Go Daddy Group Inc. was founded in 1997 by Bob Parsons, who continues to serve as its CEO. The company, based in Scottsdale, Ariz., manages more than 48 million domain names, and sells other Internet-related technologies.

Just curious - Who gave this company the rights to control domain names? How is that authority granted ??

The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) is responsible for managing and coordinating the Domain Name System (DNS) to ensure that every address is unique and that all users of the Internet can find all valid addresses. It does this by overseeing the distribution of unique IP addresses and domain names. It also ensures that each domain name maps to the correct IP address.

ICANN is also responsible for accrediting the domain name registrars. "Accredit" means to identify and set minimum standards for the performance of registration functions, to recognize persons or entities meeting those standards, and to enter into an accreditation agreement that sets forth the rules and procedures applicable to the provision of Registrar Services

I second the hope that the new owners maintain the high level of customer and tech support that GoDaddy has provided us over the years. They are competent, US based and they don't condescend to you even when you don't know something fairly basic. I'm afraid if it is like most things it was too good to last!

LMAO - It's been going down hill for the last couple of years and they more law suit than any other registrar. It can only get worse know that this new corporations only concern will be recouping their money.

GoDaddy, as in "pimp your daughter"? From what I've heard of Parsons, that sounds about right.

Go-Daddy prices are WAY too high. Nearly anyone can get "free privacy manager" and a much lower domain price.

this in a nutshell is why the USA is swirling the bowl. these companies make nothing, produce less and have zero positive effects on society. $2.25 billion dollars for a load of nothing.

The company was built on quality service. 99% of the time, when a Big Dumb Company buys out a successful one,,the first thing they do is screw customers to cut costs.

A "sellout" (better term than "buyout") often means higher prices and reduced service. The buyers can do asset stripping and increase their hoards. Late capitalism at work to make your life worse.
