Dalmatian is spot on, makes Westminster final ring

NEW YORK (AP) — More than 101 Dalmatians have tried to become America's most prized pooch. More than a thousand, probably.

And they've all ended up in the Westminster Kennel Club dog house.

That could change Tuesday night when a sprightly package of polka dots called Ian takes to the final ring at Madison Square Garden.

"He's silly, crazy and pretty wonderful to live with," handler Michael Scott said after Monday night's win in the nonsporting group.

Wobbling the whole way, a people-pleasing Pekingese made quite a walk down the green carpet to join the best of seven collection. He'll be joined by a German shepherd named Captain Crunch who likes to play soccer with his 15-year-old co-owner and a spirited wire-haired dachshund.

"These are dogs that people recognize, people like them," Westminster television host David Frei said.

The terrier, sporting and working champions will be picked Tuesday evening, with judge Cindy Vogels choosing the best in show just before 11 p.m. She has a strong terrier background but, as the fanciers like to say, the winner often comes down to "the dog on the day."

And it could be the Dalmatian. Entered in the very first Westminster in 1877, these fire house dogs have made it to the final cut seven previous times. They're not alone — Labrador retrievers, golden retrievers and dachshunds also are among the country's most popular dogs, but have never won the coveted silver bowl at the country's most prestigious show.

"I don't know why that is," said Ian's owner, Barbara Lyons. "I think it's because of the fierce competition."

In fact, she wasn't expecting this group win, either. She was set to head home to Laguna Beach, Calif., on Tuesday, but was changing her plans.

Ian is certainly distinctive. He has black spectacle markings around his eyes and plenty of spots evenly placed on his coat. He celebrated his win by jumping on most everyone around him.

Ian has won four best in show titles in his career. The Pekingese he'll face has won a whopping 114 titles.

Malachy the Peke drew cheers that grew louder with every tiny step as he repeated as the top toy. Pink tongue peeking out from his black face, he beat a heralded affenpinscher called Banana Joe in a most competitive group.

"He doesn't run. He has a dignified Pekingese gait," handler David Fitzpatrick said.

Mexican-born Captain Crunch romped to victory in the herding group. Handled by old pro James Moses, his champion attracted ample applause, as German shepherds always do at the Garden.

"The crowd really had him up," Moses said. "He handles the carpet well."

Handles soccer balls, too. That's what he enjoys doing with teen Maria Deschamps, one of his several owners.

"I like to play with him all day long," she said.

Cinders the wire-haired dachshund led the hounds, then wanted to sit rather than stand for her victory picture.

"She's a clown," handler Cheri Koppenhaver said.

More than 2,000 entries in 185 breeds and varieties were at the 136th Westminster. Still to show early Tuesday: a wire fox terrier who won the National show and a standard poodle who took the Eukanuba event.

There's also a black cocker spaniel who was the No. 1 show dog last year — he's named Beckham, maybe a good omen since a 12-story ad featuring soccer star David Beckham posing in his underwear is painted on a building that overlooks the Garden.

Beckham the dog, by the way, beat out Malachy as the country's top-winning show dog in 2011.

Plus there's a Valentine's Day treat on tap: A couple from Washington state with a Tibetan mastiff plans to hold their wedding among all the pooches.

Breed winners included a chow chow co-owned by Martha Stewart and a xoloitzcuintli called Giorgio Armani, a nice start for the alphabetically challenged contestant during Fashion Week in New York City.

The xoloitzcuintli (shoh-loh-eets-KWEEN'-tlee), formerly known as the Mexican hairless, is among six new breeds at this year's show. "Pronounce it!" a couple of fans playfully called out when the name appeared on the scoreboard.

People are stupid to pay 1000 for a dog from a breeder, when it's just going to be a family pet. If you're truly going to show your dog, that's one thing, but most people aren't. While meanwhile, millions of nice dogs are killed in shelters because no one wants them. Many of them are purebreeds too...and they're relatively "cheap" at the shelter. Of course, in my experience, mutts were always better, temperament wise and health wise, anyway.

I think the number of back yard breeders, and breeders in general should be regulated. A lot of people are just trying to make a buck off dogs. That said, if you're stupid enough to pay for one, then that's your problem and you deserve to get swindled!

lol. no. they live at least 15 years with full health and beautifull temperments. you can request that they not crop ears and tails too. pffft, at 1k you get a showdud.

My dalmatian is/was a shelter dog from some backyard breeder. She was found wandering the street and very pregnant. Gave birth to 11 puppies 2 days later (all looking like labs) While her spots are beautiful she does have what you might call a few defects but is perfect to me in every way. I agree with you I am totally against backyard breeding. If they can't completely regulate it then they should be heavlly taxed and the money to go into a spay neuter fund.

I visit the dog shelters and I hate to say it but many of the dogs are not good candidates for families, sad but they are out of control, not all but some

Dalmatians are gorgeous, my cousin has one that I think is absolutely breathtaking. However, they are definitely not for households with kids. I never believed that statement until I had seen how temperamental his was! I also agree with many of the other posters, this is not a sport. You barely jog in a circle while toting a dog on a leash. This is just a show, just like beauty pageants. That's all this is. There's nothing sporty about it. You want to turn it into a sport, make the dogs show off their abilities. For example, make the herding dogs herd something!

Mine is tempermental but I believe that has to do with the abuse that she suffered as a puppy. If the Dal is brought into a home with childern as a puppy or a very young dog I think that things would be fine without any problems.

Dalmations are not Labs with spots. They are carriage dogs. Do any of you know what that means? A carriage dog was there to GUARD the riders of a carriage from thieves and wolves. A Dalmation is pretty much a GUARD dog. They should be handled like a GSD or Rottie. They aren't temperamental, they are serious. Yes they have their silly side, but they really should be in the working dog category, not non-sporting. Just like the standard Poodle, its a working dog, not non-sporting. The AKC needs to reevaluate its way of categorizing the breeds.

Ian was robbed of Best in Show. He was CLEARLY the best representation of a dalmation and the best presented dog, next to Fefe the Dobie, in the final ring. That Peke looks like those tribbles from the old Star Trek movies. I mean, how is that a dog? Ugh! I was really rooting for Ian. Worst upset in dog show history.
Oh and to "Anon", you pay $1,000 for a family pet to insure a QUALITY dog that the breeder spent time and money in acquiring the proper breeding stock, testing, nutrition and training. As the old saying goes, you get what you pay for. A cheap dog ends up inbred, at the vet for genetic disorders and can sometimes have rage disorder, a seizure disorder that causes your dog to go from cute to dangerous in 3 seconds with no warning.
I totally support those who maintain the INTEGRITY and HISTORY of the breed. Those who KNOW what they are doing. Who put in the time, energy and MONEY to improve their lines with every litter. There is a huge difference between a breeder and a REPUTABLE BREEDER. Cheap dogs come from breeders and quality, well-bred dogs come from REPUTABLE BREEDERS...and their dogs aren't cheap.

Finally, at least the Dal won the group !!! I used to show poodles, but have to admit, over the years got sick of seeing them take the group more times than not. I bought my first Ch. sired Dal in June 1995 @ 8 weeks of age. I lost her (she died in my bed) in Dec. 2009, just 6 weeks after my 34 days in the hospital. She was 14 1/2 . Geeze, I still miss her.

I so hope the Dalmatian doesn't win. It will mean hundreds of Dal teenagers in the country's shelters 2/3 years from now when the cute spotted pups grown out of their owners ability to cope with them. Just like after 1001 Dalmatians. Oh Gawd!

        Cruella's revenge!
      • sue 3 mths ago
@VK,...I sort of agree with you, but you could say that about whatever breed wins. BTW, it was 101 Dalmations. Many more people saw the movie, than watched the dog show, and as for the movie, they were kids seeing puppies, a parents nightmare. However, you're certainly correct about the negative impact the movie had on the breed.

      dog showing is a pastime....not a sport...

      Cruella should be the handler!

Why is this in the sports column Yahoo?

Because dog showing is a sport, ya think?

Is it true that if Cruella DeVille wanted to make a coat from the skins of dalmation puppies, she would have no trouble at all obtaining what she needed from animal shelters. (vote)

Some "sport"... this industry is a major abuser of dogs, and a total ripoff... with "pure" bred stinkers going for thousands while shelters kill dogs endlessly. Many of the puppy farms breed nut-job, potentially vicious dogs due to interbreeding... and Vick went to jail?!?
      • Greg 3 mths ago
You speak like you know much, but know nothing. You confuse puppy factories with breeders who truly love and care for their animals. Who do you think organizes dog rescues for their breeds so they don't get put down?
      • M.J 3 mths ago
I'm with Greg on this one. Yes there are some puppy mills out there, but there are also very good breeders that actually give a #$%$ about their pups. My grandmothers cousin has two chihuahua's that when pups are born, she finds homes for. Like any breeder she asks for a hefty price, but she keeps up with the pups and makes sure they are in good homes. She even takes part in donating what she makes off of the pups to the local shelters. So no, not all breeders are terrible.
