Dancer saved from capsized cruise liner after Facebook plea

After the devastating crash of the Carnival Costa Concordia cruise liner on Italy’s coast, relatives and friends of the survivors have been seeking information about their loved ones through social media channels like Facebook and Twitter according to a recent report from Reuters. A 22-year old British dancer by the name of Rose Metcalf used Facebook to post a cry for help while the ship was sinking. Included as a Facebook caption on a photo of herself within a dark portion of the ship, she posted “My name is Rose, it’s Friday the 13th and I’m one of the last survivors still on board the sinking cruise ship off the coast of Italy. Pray for us to be rescued.” Hours later, Rose was airlifted to safety off a slanted deck by a rescue helicopter.

According to a new report from The Telegraph, the sister of the head waiter on the Costa Concordia posted on Facebook about the incoming ship just minutes before the ship smashed into the rocky shore. She stated ”In a short period of time, the Concordia ship will pass very close. A big greeting to my brother who finally gets to have a holiday on landing in Savona.” Captain Francesco Schettino had alerted the head waiter to the bridge to watch the ship pass by the nearby shore. Despite warnings from crew members, the captain continued on the same course and ultimately capsized the luxury cruise liner. Police have taken Captain Schettino into custody and he is currently facing multiple manslaughter charges for the deaths of at least six passengers.

Survivors and family members have turned to Facebook groups to post information about missing friends as well as vent their anger toward the captain’s actions. They are also using Twitter to post real-time updates with pictures of the salvage operation as well as any information on the recovery effort. Twenty-two passengers and four crew members are still missing.

OK, who thought this article was going to say that the people who read the facebook post helped coordinate the rescue of the passenger that posted? Absolute garbage headline!

Glad to see I'm not the only one who sees it this way. What, if it wasn't for terry the dancer and her facebooking no one would have noticed the giant capsized ship?

Wow, most of the comments are useless on here, so I thought I would throw in a quick rebuttal of actual facts. Rose, the "stupid" dancer that you are referring to, has been noted by many of the survivors as their savior. She even helped American and other English speaking families find life jackets for their children (hence the reason she remained on board). Also, it is apparent that many of you have never been on an international cruise ship or been out of your country. If you would think before you talk, maybe you would have considered the number of elderly and wheel-chair bound people that often take cruises and how difficult it would be to get them to shore. NOT TO MENTION IT IS WINTER and water temperatures are extremely low.
This is a sad situation and people have lost their lives. I'm sure this was a chance of a lifetime for many of them, and they didn't even get to see the beauty they set out to see. I suggest you quit with the stupid remarks and instead spend your time sending positive thoughts to those who have lost friends and loved ones and praying that the cruise ship doesn't release any fuel into the sea that surrounds one of the most beautiful places in the world.

Praying isn't going to work. Just thought I should let you know...

And joellynn...you know this how? Were you there, or are your comments something you heard or read thru social media?
The only stories I'm finding about Rose are all about Rose talking about Rose.

GodFree -- praying helps people feel better, and keeps their minds fixed on the problem so that perhaps they can think of a way to help. I believe in God, but whether there is a God or not, spending some time thinking about people in bad situations is a valuable thing to do.

Francesco Schettino is clearly an amateur who doesn't have a common sense about the obligation of a captain. He risked the lives of over 4000 to entertain a few of his stupidity. Giving someone like him a ship and he will wreck it.

the man is an incompetent coward. The captain is supposed to be the last one off his ship.

Interesting that they found a story about someone named Rose (titanic)

The title of this article makes it sound like they would have left her there if it weren't for Facebook.

Next time just follow the captain - you'll be the first one off the ship.

What an inane article. There's no cause and effect here -- as it happens, she updated her Facebook. Later, like all the other survivors, she got rescued. Post hoc ergo propter hoc. Even sillier are the comments suggesting that she should have been focused on evacuating, not updating her Facebook. Evacuating a ship that size takes many hours, during which you wait, wait, and wait some more. The 30 seconds it probably took her to update her Facebook was hardly reckless.

If Schettino wasn't such a little gay #$%$ he could have gotten on the ship's PA system and told everyone in english exactly how to abandon ship. And, he could have done that LONG before he was ever in any danger himself.Had he done that, his boating days would still be over. Nobody gives you a second chance to destroy another $100 million vessel. But, he wouldn't be in jail, or facing arrest. And, he wouldn't end up looking like a little fairy, who left women and children and this dancing girl to fend for themselves!Looking gay is probably the WORST thing that can ever happen to a straight man, and you don't get more gay than this. The coast guard verbally #$%$slapped this fool over the radio, and rightly so. Schettino didn't deserve any life preserver or boat. Instead, he should have taken a big box of TAMPONS with him, as he abandoned ship!

"Despite warnings from crew members, the captain continued on the same course..."

Is this true? Has this come out in the investigation?

Maybe they could make a movie about a girl named Rose and a sinking ship.....
    • rcmansid  •  Tucson, Arizona  •  4 mths ago
They must have had WiFi aboard ship. A lot of American cell phones don't work over there because USA decided to use a different system protocol.
The salvage operation to re float the ship is going be a dilly since the captain ripped the friggen keel out of the bottom of the ship.

Perhaps Captain Schettino was busy using his ipad and failed to notice where his ship was headed
