Daniel Goleman is the author of Emotional Intelligence, the national bestselling book based on his research which began at Harvard where he studied methods to intervene in stress arousal. This three-part video series helps the audience see behind the expressions, hear the inner thoughts of an angry boss or associate and plainly see the net effect of toxic emotions that are spread from person to person as easily as the common cold. The film uses animation to show how the lower emotional brain can literally highjack the higher thinking brain and leading a person to feel angry and out of control.

Daniel Goleman, an internationally known psychologist and author of the bestselling book Emotional Intelligence, and StressStop.com, a leading provider of stress management materials, have teamed up to create three new training videos on Emotional Intelligence. Emotional Intelligence is an important topic in Training and Human Resource departments throughout the US and around the world, because it gives working professionals a new yardstick by which to predict or measure success in a potential hire or a longtime employee.

Unlike IQ, emotional intelligence (EQ) predicts how well a worker is going to interact with the people around him. People who test high for emotional intelligence tend to do better at communicating, managing others, controlling their emotions and getting along better with their coworkers. They are aware of their own emotions and are good at reading the emotions in others. These emotional intelligence skills turn out to be an excellent predictor of who will do well in a business environment and who won’t.

Video has an advantage over print as a way to teach these skills, because the words on a page simply can’t convey the complexity of the human face or the human voice. The wide variety of expressions, the tone of voice and even the minuscule emotional nuances buried in every look of the eyes has to be evaluated and interpreted with accuracy in order for both parties in a conversation to be fully understood. And most of this interpersonal communication goes on below the surface, unbeknownst to the communicators themselves, except on some vague level they are barely even aware of.

But with the help of Dr. Goleman’s expert advice and a cast of talented actors, the veil of secrecy that has obfuscated the true meaning of emotional exchanges can now be lifted. This three-part video series helps the audience see behind the expressions, hear the inner thoughts of an angry boss and his unwitting associate and plainly see the net effect of toxic emotions that are spread from person to person as easily as the common cold. And with the help of extreme close-ups and more very talented acting the audience learns, first hand, how to identify emotions in just eyes of another person actually seeing the subtle differences between emotions like fear and disgust.

“Emotions are very powerful and they shouldn’t be swept under the rug,” explains Goleman. “Emotions steer you toward the things you want and away from the things you don’t want. But sometimes our emotions overpower us and we’re powerless to stop it.”

Goleman calls this phenomenon an “emotional highjack.” The film uses animation to show how the lower emotional brain can literally highjack the higher thinking brain and when that happens, a person feels angry and out of control. Using emotional intelligence skills, and a new awareness of what it means to experience an emotional highjack, the audience learns how to bring the wayward emotional brain back under “conscious control.” In addition, Goleman explains exactly what happens in the brain when we can’t think straight, when we think negatively, when we worry obsessively and even when we feel a sense of connection with another human being.

Daniel Goleman began the studies that led to Emotional Intelligence at Harvard where he also studied methods to intervene in stress arousal. Stress management is a crucial skill in emotional intelligence. Drawing on his Harvard research, Goleman narrates an instructional CD, Relax, that comes with the training videos. The CD allows people to choose from a half dozen proven stress management methods.

Daniel Goleman wrote the bestselling Emotional Intelligence (Bantam), as well as Working With Emotional Intelligence and Primal Leadership: Learning to Lead with Emotional Intelligence. He has written for Psychology Today and The New York Times. He frequently gives lectures at universities and to business groups around the country.
