David Letterman To Appear On ‘Late Late Show’ Hosted By Regis Philbin
David Letterman will make a rare appearance on CBS’ Late Late Show next week; he will pay a visit to the show as a guest on Tuesday – the second of two nights pal Regis Philbin is hosting. Letterman is joining Martha Stewart and CBS sportscaster Tracy Wolfson that night; Martin Short, Tony Danza, Alan Alda and Susan Sarandon are scheduled to be Philbin’s guests the previous night.
Philbin is among those hosting the show as producers CBS TV Studios and Letterman’s Worldwide Pants look to fill the gap between December’s departure of longtime host Craig Ferguson and the March 23 debut of new host James Corden. (This week’s hosts are Jim Gaffigan and Judd Apatow.) Letterman, meanwhile, is getting ready to retire as host of CBS’ Late Show on May 20, ending the longest run in U.S. late-night talk show hosting history at more than 33 years, including 22 at CBS.
Back in 2000, Philbin was among those who guest hosted Late Show when Letterman underwent heart surgery; Regis filled in again in 2003 when Letterman got shingles.
In 2011, Letterman made another rare appearance, as one of the guests during Philbin’s final week hosting Live! With Regis & Kelly. After reminiscing about their long friendship, Letterman surprised the audience – and Philbin – by jumping from his chair and planting a kiss on Philbin.
