David Muir Moderates “Virtual Audience” With Pope Francis For ABC News

ABC evening news anchor David Muir today moderated a “virtual audience” with Pope Francis at the Vatican, ahead of his trip to the U.S. next month. Pope Francis spoke simultaneously, via satellite, to students at Cristo Rey Jesuit High School in Chicago, congregants from a McAllen, Texas, church near the U.S.-Mexico border, and a group of homeless men and women in Los Angeles.

Not coincidentally, Muir tomorrow celebrates his first anniversarsy as anchor of World News Tonight.

The virtual audience with Pope Francis will be part of an ABC News special edition of 20/20 on Friday, September 4, called Pope Francis And The People. Muir tonight anchored a special edition of his evening newscast from the Vatican, with World News Tonight weekend anchors Cecilia Vega and Tom Llamas, and Fusion Anchor Mariana Atencio reporting on the ground in each of the U.S. cities.

All ABC News programs will report on the special event this week. ABC News Digital will air the original taping with the Pope in English and Spanish after the special airs on Friday, September 4. ABC News Radio and ABC NewsOne will provide special programming of the special broadcast to radio stations and affiliates.
