Death toll from cold spell in Ukraine reaches 30

KIEV, Ukraine (AP) — Ukrainian authorities say that the number of people who died of hypothermia in recent days has reached 30 as the country grapples with an unusually severe cold spell.

The Emergency Situations Ministry said on its website Tuesday that most of the victims were found frozen on the streets. On Monday officials put the death toll at 18 people.

Temperatures plunged to minus 23 C (minus 10 F) in the capital Kiev and elsewhere in Ukraine as schools and kindergartens closed and authorities set up hundreds of heated tents for the homeless.

Hope things get better, nature has a way of reminding us who is in control. Good luck to all the people in the Ukraine.

The fact they froze on the street bothers me a lot. It shouldn't be - everywhere there is cold winters should have a warmth plan in place by service - like they do with snowplows. Cruel.
      • Betsy 3 mths ago
Right rainy day, they should have never dies, and now they are getting the homeless heated tents, little late for the ones already dead tho.
      • Scootter 3 mths ago
@ Rainy Day, The fact is that they did not expect this extreme cold. The story is that they were not prepared. They are not Cruel. They antisipated a usual winter but it is changing in chaotic ways. This is just one of thousands of ways the weather is changing. Hold on tight , It is going to be a rough ride!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

-23C is not such a cold temperature, especially for those regions. People die there, because they get drunk, fell asleep somewhere in the gutter, and freeze to death.
      • javier 3 mths ago
Very true. Even after they put up heating tents, open up more homeless buildings... they are still going to find frozen bodies everywhere.

There's no such thing as a "good way to go", but hypothermia has to be awful.
      • AlexL 3 mths ago
They say it's not. At some point one stops feeling cold, and just falls asleep...
      • Noonsa 3 mths ago
AlexL, very true, although the leadup to that is excruciating, apparently. But I think I'd prefer it over drowning or fire. :/

very sad for those people. I would hate to freeze to death, very painful, I imagine.
      • susu 3 mths ago
I have heard that you just go to sleep and don't wake up..it's one of the least painful ways to die...I don't know if it's true and the victims aren't here to say one way or the other.
      • Yorick Hunt 3 mths ago
Actually, medically, you just become numb and fall into a deep sleep and die. It's apparently not the worst way to go.
    • PatrickG  •  3 mths ago
Who are you people? Seriously...I'm curious. How did you come to hate other cultures so much? You actually enjoy seeing others suffer. It brings you pleasure. Anybody care to share?
      • JD 3 mths ago
The level of hatred here is making me start to believe in demonic walk-ins...
      • PatrickG 3 mths ago
Agreed, JD. Not one of them has the personal courage to look within and share what brought them to this state of mind. That, or they're not capable. Not sure which.

I used to live in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. The temp hit MINUS 40 every year, but they had the technology to cope, and NEVER closed down. The power NEVER went out, and the water lines NEVER froze. During extreme cold, the bus drivers were ordered to physically force anyone wandering the streets onto the warm bus, since they were likely delirious from the cold.
in fact, the only stupid thing people did up there during the winter was to fantasize about Los Angeles, thinking it was paradise.

the key word is homeless, folks that are on the edge will have trouble living outside even at a mild -10. with a bit of equipment and know how you can stay out much colder.

-49 in Alaska yesterday. Yep. Hot is cold and Cold is hot we're told.

If the schools were closed down why did they need heated tents for the homeless? Couldn't they have just let them in the schools?
    • Chilly Billy  •  3 mths ago
It's called winter for a reason. Stuff breaks at -27F.

No, its not global warming you idiots, it is just a change in the weather pattern, and yes minus 10 is very cold, where I live it drops to minus 30 or 40 every year. These people would do better if they had not just heat, but food for their bodies to create internal heat. But then hell, they stopped giving extra heating money to the northeast (the gov) so who knows when this starts happening here. Got to keep paying those foreign aid payments you know.....

I mourn the needless loss of 30 human beings hope their government extends help to the needy that remain.--I suggest the application of the "Golden Rule".

In NC, we are experiencing an unusually warm winter. It is 70 F in January. But last winter was the coldest, wetest we've ever had.
    • Patriot  •  Winona, Minnesota  •  3 mths ago
Living in Minnesota it gets down to anywhere from -10 to -30 occationally where I live (not this winter though). Those temps are no joke, unprotected you start to freeze almost instantly. Thats horrible that anyone has to spend time in temps like that, my heart goes out to them.

Right on Eric! People in this country just don't have a clue, life in the Ukraine is brutal, even on a warm day.

What's funny and mostly ignored by 'climate change' radicals .. There were
non around the last time these things happened, and they have many times,
of course happened before Factories, Cars, Plane's, HVAC .. It’s a fact our
Weather is circulatory and we have highs and lows .. Means Nothing.
    • Yorick Hunt  •  3 mths ago
      So....global cooling? Or....
