Death of Whitney Houston leaves Grammys reeling

LOS ANGELES (AP) — The Grammys got under way on Sunday, with the Recording Academy trying to focus on music's biggest night after of the death of one of music's biggest names — Whitney Houston.

Houston died on the eve of the Grammys at the Beverly Hilton Hotel, where she was preparing to attend a pre-Grammy party. Her death cast a huge shadow over the event. As the pre-telecast awards ceremony began, co-host Dave Koz acknowledged the tragedy, noting the "great legacy of Miss Whitney Houston. She's in our hearts and our minds."

A tribute to Houston featuring Jennifer Hudson was to take place during the main ceremony later Sunday.

Before the death of one of pop music's most important figures, the Grammy buzz focused on whether Adele — 2011's top-selling artist and set to make her first public performance on the show since having vocal cord surgery — would be the queen of the Grammys. Although Kanye West leads all nominees with seven and Bruno Mars and the Foo Fighters tied Adele with six nominations, she was favored to sweep all of her categories.

But as show time neared, the focus remained on Houston's death.

Grammy show producer Ken Ehrlich was quick to announce Hudson's tribute. "It's too fresh in everyone's memory to do more at this time," he said late Saturday, "but we would be remiss if we didn't recognize Whitney's remarkable contribution to music fans in general, and in particular her close ties with the Grammy telecast and her Grammy wins and nominations over the years."

More Houston tributes from nominees and presenters are expected during the three-and-a-half hour Staples Center show, which was to feature the Foo Fighters, Mars, Nicki Minaj, Bruce Springsteen, Paul McCartney, Taylor Swift, Chris Brown and Riha0nna.

It will mark the first time Rihanna and Brown have appeared at the same awards show since his attack on her three years ago — also on the eve of the Grammys — forced both to drop out of the show and led to an assault conviction for Brown. It almost derailed his career, but 2011 marked a huge comeback, and he was rewarded with a Grammy performance slot on Sunday night's CBS broadcast.

Rihanna is also a nominee, up for album of the year. She is competing with Adele's "21," Mars' "Doo-Woops & Hooligans," the Foo Fighters "Wasting Light" and Lady Gaga's "Born This Way."

Before the telecast began, some of the early winners included Skrillex for best dance/electronic album, Tony Bennett for best traditional pop vocal album for his "Duets II," Corinne Bailey Rae for best R&B performance for "Is This Love" and "The Book Of Mormon" for best musical theater album.

Adele's "Rolling in the Deep" is nominated for record and song of the year. Both categories also include Bon Iver's "Holocene," Mumford & Sons "The Cave," and Mars' "Grenade." Katy Perry's "Firework" is up for record of the year but instead of that song, West's "All of the Lights" takes the remaining position in the song of the year category.

The ceremony also marks the first since a major overhaul of the categories last year, which led to them being trimmed from 109 to 78. The move upset some musicians, and a protest was planned outside of the Staples Center on Sunday.

Great song writing material. So many songwriters at the grammy's. surely someone can write a decent memorial song in time.

It's not like they didn't see this coming. Her bizarre behavior over the past years has led up to right where she is now. Winehouse, Houston...who's next? Demi Moore perhaps? Sheen? Hollywood will never smarten up. Drugs and money come too easy.

Allison Krauss will never end up like this and she has 5xs the Emmys that Whitney got.

Its sad really sad. Sad that this woman died and instead being half way decent human beings, people are using it for a platform to spout their hate, ignorance, and bigotry. None of your so called jokes are funny and your asinine political views are best kept to yourselves. All you show is that you have no idea how it feels to lose someone. Its not about her celebrity its about what she meant to each her fans. Each of ties her with a memory, a good memory. No matter what she did , she was important in her own way to our lives.

You use drugs, you take your chances. If people stopped coddling the celebrities that use drugs, maybe these things would stop happening.

She wasn't the least bit important to my life. I couldn't stand her horrible music and having it hammered into your skull via over-repeated airplay only made it worse. I save my condolences for real legends of music like Etta James, Johnny Otis and Jimmy Castor. It is very tragic Houston died this way, but I can't say I'll miss her wretched music. Admittedly, she had a great voice, but it was wasted on bland pop crap that helped to define how plastic the 80s really were. RIP Whitney and too bad.

yes well you aren't the least bit important to a lot of peoples' lives and to some you are. its not okay for those whose lives you aren't important to, to mock the ones you are important to.

there are a lot of psychics on the comment line wait to you know the truth before you make you stupid comments until you walk in her shoes or unless you were in her life the last days of her live how do you know how she died?????
    • grasence  •  3 mths ago
The majority of the comments on this board are absolutely pathetic. Where is your humanity? Your love of music, good songs, and the arts? You concern for another human being? Sadly, it may have never been there at all.

I love great music and art. However, Houston was a crackhead and had plenty of family problems as well. There is no need to place her upon some pedestal as a fine, upstanding individual who shared her gift of music with the masses. She, like every other big star out there, sang for her supper and turned that into numerous bad habits.

Grasence, I wonder the same thing after reading these comments on stories. Are people in this world this sick?
      • brian 3 mths ago
We love great music. Whitney Houston wasn't great music. She was bland, easily disposable pablum. It's very tragic the way she ended up, but she should not be put on a pedestal as a goddess. Her music was plastic, even though it sold by the bucketload. She gave her record company what they wanted, that was about it.

So here we go again-got white over weight drugged out singers- a child molester and now another drugged out singer. Guess the world only should morn Presley,Morrison,Jackson and Houston. All great voices but give it a rest. They let drugs/booze/etc destroy their lives

Grammys??? There will be more cocaine at the Grammys than the DEA has confiscated in the last 12 months...

They're not reeling. The Hollywood junkies are perhaps a bit skittish in disbelief that their shallow drugged up lifestyle is deadly and are left wondering who's next. but on the bright side, She beat out Winehouse in getting a tribute for the big show. Timing is everything.

I agree. they might be sad she's dead, but that hasn't kept their vanity levels down one notch. I've never seen such self bragging in a long time. It's amazing how much these people throw the word "artist" around too. Most of them wouldn't know good music if it bowled them over. It's too bad I agreed to watch this with my wife.

Have to wonder if her death on the eve of the Grammy's precipitated her death in some fashion?! What's the real story?!

It's too bad this outpouring of love and support had to be started by her death. Where were all of these artists/moguls talking heads etc while her heart was beating? Fly free Whitney...no more pain. My seepest sympathies to her family, especially her devoted daughter.
