Deaths from painkiller overdose triple in decade

NEW YORK (AP) — The number of overdose deaths from powerful painkillers more than tripled over a decade, the government reported Tuesday — a trend that a U.S. health official called an epidemic, but one that can be stopped.

Prescription painkillers such as OxyContin, Vicodin and methadone led to the deaths of almost 15,000 people in 2008, including actor Heath Ledger. That's more than three times the 4,000 deaths from narcotics in 1999.

Such painkillers "are meant to help people who have severe pain," said Dr. Thomas Frieden, director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta, which issued the report. "They are, however, highly addictive."

The report shows nearly 5 percent of Americans ages 12 and older said they've abused painkillers in the past year — using them without a prescription or just for the high. In 2008-09 surveys, Oklahomans reported the highest rate of abuse; the lowest was in Nebraska and Iowa.

The overdose deaths reflect the spike in the number of narcotic painkillers prescribed every year — enough to give every American a one-month supply, Frieden said.

Prescriptions rose as doctors aimed to better treat pain and as new painkillers hit the market.

Frieden and White House drug czar Gil Kerlikowske, who joined him at CDC headquarters in Atlanta, said states need to take sharp actions to reverse the long-running trend.

States oversee prescription practices and can rigorously monitor prescriptions and crack down on "pill mills" and "doctor shopping" by patients, Frieden said.

Doctors should limit prescriptions — giving only a three-day supply for acute pain, for example — and look for alternative treatments, he said.

"For chronic pain, narcotics should be the last resort," he added.

A federal drug plan announced this year calls for state programs to track prescriptions. All but two states — Missouri and New Hampshire — have approved them, said Kerlikowske. But a number of states don't have them in place yet or doctors aren't using them enough to check on their patients' past prescriptions, he said.

"America's prescription drug abuse epidemic is not a problem that's going to be solved overnight, but at the same time, we're not powerless," said Kerlikowske, who urged parents to get rid of unneeded or expired painkillers so they aren't misused.

Some states are taking action. Earlier this month, a doctor in Southern California was sentenced to prison for illegally selling tens of thousands of prescriptions for painkillers and sedative. Ohio now requires pain clinics to be licensed by the state, and limits the amount of pills that can be dispensed at clinics. Florida also has cracked down on so-called "pill mills."

Overall, there were 36,450 fatal overdoses in 2008, including accidental cases and suicides involving illegal drugs like heroin and cocaine along with prescription medicines. About three-quarters of the deaths from prescriptions involved narcotic painkillers.

That's the year Ledger died from an accidental overdose of painkillers and sedatives. A few months later, a 12-year-old girl from suburban New York overdosed on methadone she bought from a 15-year-old boy.

Narcotics also played a role in the recent deaths of a 27-year-old model at the mansion of an Anheuser-Busch heir and of former hockey player Derek Boogaard.

Other findings of the CDC report:

    — New Mexico had the highest overdose death rate (27 per 100,000) and Nebraska had the lowest (5.5). The national rate was 11.9.

    — Fatal overdoses were more likely in men, middle-aged adults and whites and American Indians.

    — Sales of prescription painkillers are highest in the Southeast and Northwest.

Frieden noted the wide differences between overdose death rates among states. For example, West Virginia's rate is about 26 per 100,000 while neighboring Virginia's rate is only 9.

"This highlights the importance of states getting policies right on preventing drug abuse," he said.

Here is how the medications work - if you are in pain, the drug goes to the PAIN RECEPTORS and the person experiences a decrease in pain. If you are a freaking loser pathetic piece of crap, you either are not in pain OR you decide to go for 120% "pain relief" for "fun" and you get addicted because instead of going to pain receptors that ARE NOT FIRING, they attach to opiod receptors. People who are truly in pain will never try to 100% pain relief or even 80% - somewhere around 50-70% pain relief is good enough. Just enough to keep from shooting myself is good enough for me. The faster all the losers die the better I say. They have made life so difficult for true sufferers of pain that instead of being treated with the respect we deserve, everyone assumes we are losers like you. I am ready to punch the next medical professional who tries to tell me 15 years after my back was broken in a high volocity twisting injury which all but broke mu middle spine - tore every muscle, tendon and ligament and tore 2 ribs loose - that my main problem is depression, not pain and tries to get me to sign a #$%$ "agreement" to get my urine tested like some sort of street filth. I spit on you loser addicts. I have never experienced any type of euphoria from medications because I am in pain. I hope the addicts die as fast as possible - go ahead - eat those hydro/apaps and die quietly from heart and respiratory depression or from liver failure. I do not care because you are total losers and not worth the air you breathe. Bitter? Right on. In extreme pain? Yup unlike you freaking low IQ losers. No pity - if you were injured and MADE THE CHOICE to take more than needed and got addicted - IT IS ALL YOUR FAULT for being a #$%$ loser. God you people make me sick. My MD father in law actually claims Rush Limbaugh is not a slime because he started out as a real pain patient and it is not his fault he was getting 1600 pain pills per doctor visit - we do not speak anymore because he is too stupid to accept that an addict is an addict - what a waste of medical school.

I accidentally "thumbed-up" this post of yours--really, I wanted to "thumbs-down" it--f.u. for calling addicts "losers" and "filth"--no doubt many are, but many are trying to self-treat depression and/or other problems. Zoloft might help you--I used to have that kind of rage, too... Well, at least you're an Atheist (no Christian could be so mean-spirited, right?, lol...)...
      • AnonAnon 6 mths ago
Self treating depression with the equivalent to heroine? Ummm - nonsense. The most mean spirited people I know are those who go around proclaiming their CHiristian cresdentials so that doesn;t hold up either. My faith is none of your business and I don;t see you oozing "Christian values" - just paying them lip service like so many others do. No thanks on Zol - nasty side effects. Sorry you are offended Alan - but you do admit that many are losers - I did not say every single one is universally - in fact, in another post, I say military folks get a complete pass because they are being force fed medications by the government. People who steal from Mommy and Daddy's medicine cabinet and who rob pharmacies and fake pain to get meds to use and sell and play games where they fill a candy bowl with different meds and take a handful and most especially those who chew and crush tablets are the morons I am speaking of. I was raised in a time when only the lowest of the low did heroin - it was considered a filthy drug - pain pill addicts will eventually shoot up heroine when they can;t get the pills anymore or when the real tamper proof formula is applied to ALL narcotic medications making them useless for addicts. Again, vets of that era get a pass here - everyone knows they are being forcefed uppers, downers and pain pills to keep them in the field which makes the command structure the filthy pushers. For most people, addiction is a choice just like smoking and drinkg and eating too much is a choice - that has been the general attitude of the American population right? If overeating is a choice then so is addiction. People are grossed out by the fat and say it is their fault not McDonalds commercials which promise happy family relationships if you eat 3 meals a day there. I can;t imagine what kind of euphoria pain pill abusers get from this, heroine use is always portryed as people sitting around half-asleep - nothig euphoric in that. People have a choice - the first time you do a certain mind altering drug your brain is capable of knowing if it will become addicted when it screams "I want more" and the choice to never ever do the drug again is there. Heroine is cheaper so I'd like to see the addicts migrate entirely to heroine and leave prescription meds in the hands of physicians. Oh - you didn;t mention Jews, or Muslims - would they express meanspiritedness or is that only for Christians and Atheists? Hmmmm?

I have cronic pain in lower back L_4 L5 with root nerve compression I can remember a day since March 03 1996 that I have not been in pain. I am in a pain clinic that helps me manage my pain I take narcotics and have since 1996 and I am still alive not everyone abuse their medications some of us use the medications that we recieved to us in our everyday life. No the medications don't relieve me from all my pain but it does help me, it takes the edge off. I do get high from my medications, without them what in the world would I do?
      • Dr. Xavier Lent 6 mths ago
I understand completely .. It is nothing but SHAME that people are advocating against the gift from God that brings much needed relief and sanity to those in unbearable agony. I found many "pain clinics" are methadone clinics .. were you put on methadone? Methadone is a poor pain controller but the most difficult to quit - If you are on methadone that is why you still have pain. .
      • AnonAnon 6 mths ago
I hope you meant you DO NOT get high from your meds
      • Alan 6 mths ago
"the gift from God"--Please: if there were a "god", why wouldn't "he" simply prevent/cure the cause of the pain? Ughhh..

These people who are addicted are making hard for people who need them. Doctors don't want to perscribe for fear that people are getting them to get high, now when people are in pain and ask the first thing they think is junkie. It's happened to me several times.
      • Guess Who 6 mths ago
Who really needs them continously? Addicts!!!

        Accute chronic pain patients.
      • fugitive 6 mths ago
Doctors should educate their patients who appear in need of pain killers and go into a data base and determine if they have any previous medical records of drug dependency. If not, they should educate them of the severe consequences from abuse of their med. If they are addiction prone and do need pain killers, they should control the quantity of distribution each time to prevent addictive behavior.

In addition, in June a single researcher got a patent for a first in its class tamper proof narcotic delivery system - it took him TEN years to get the patent because the Rx companies did not want him to get it and the USPTO made sure to slow him down. The guy is an American hero and a true American with ingenuity and persistance unlike most corporate zombies and the losers who vote for them and their low taxes. Now another 3 yrs to get it to market.......Build a better mouse trap and corporate America beats you to death with it - pathetic
      • Alan 6 mths ago
I gave you a "thumbs-up"--thanks for the interesting/informative post. Just one thing: "The guy is an American hero"--yes, AND: He's a *WORLD* Hero!

Now the only one's that can get pain pills are the one's who screwed it up for those who really need them and use them the way they were meant to be used "like so many other things."

I'm lucky I have a doc who gives me my Vicodin as I need it without question, he knows I'm not an abuser. I got Neuropathy as a result of chemo during my cancer treatment, I already had Fibromalgia, along with severe Rheumatoid Arthritis. So when I say I LIVE with pain, I know pain. I use to do all sorts of things outside & because of my meds I could, but the pain has gotten so bad now I can't do much out & very little inside my house. But I thank God every day for pain meds, they have helped me have a better life.

Leave the people alone who are going to ONE doctor, ONE pharmacy, do NOT "doctor shop" and take their meds properly. There are plenty of those folks doing it the right way. Don't lump them into the same class as the abusers.
    • Shirley W  •  Chicago, United States  •  6 mths ago
I can see putting a limit on certain drugs, but when one is in constant pain and needs them that does hurt those in need. I find it is much better to take one vicodin than a handful of over the counter pain meds. I think it would help more if MORE doctors cared about their patience and took care of the root of the problem instead of just dishing out the meds.

i have had back pain for many years and take pain pills when I have a project to do, such and wall painting, raking etc. I am 66 and would rather be on pain killers then just sitting here in pain waiting for the big one...and whos business is it if I take pain drugs? I did my time raising a family and giving back to society, let me live the rest of my life pain free and happy and butt out. If I ever OD'd so be it....at least I wont be hurting

I prescribe narcotics. I am a salaried physician - I do not get paid any more for prescribing pain pills than for not prescribing pain pills. When I started practicing 25 years ago it was considered bad to prescribe narcotics except perhaps to someone who was near death from cancer. As a result I had patients, some of whom had been through several back surgeries, whose day consisted of lying on the couch and crying because of the pain and their inability to do anything. Now we realize that it is OK to treat pain. I have patients who take a lot of narcotics, but they get through the day pretty well - some of them are still working - doing manual labor like they have done for the past 35 years - only because they are able to treat their chronic pain. The problem with treating pain is that I have no way of knowing how much pain someone really has - there is no blood test or X-ray that tells me that. I have to accept that they are telling me the truth, although I try to figure out who is just full of #$%$ I CAN and do look up in our state's database and make sure that they aren't doctor-shopping. I have no doubt that some of my patients are abusing their drugs - but I would rather know that the majority of my patients are getting needed treatment for their pain even if there is some diversion and abuse than to think that many patients are suffering with severe pain. And is it about money? YES - it is about LACK of money! Narcotics are cheap. Physical therapy, Acupuncture, and comprehensive back treatment programs are expensive - and Medicaid won't pay for them, but they will pay for all the narcotics I can write. I would be much happier if I could get my patients comprehensive care, but I can't. At least I practice in a state where medical marijuana is legal, and some of my patients have reduced their dependence on narcotics with the judicious use of marijuana, and I am much happier certifying someone for medical marijuana than giving them more narcotics.

So we go back to undertreating acute and chronic pain -- leave dozens of people miserable to avoid a few overdoses??? Sounds like the bad old days. Glad I'm retired from Medicine.

Unless people have experienced dibilitating pain they should have no voice. The problem is kids grabbing them and people with no respect for how the drugs should be used. I am a person who have had 8 vertabre fused twice , and recently undergone a quadruple bypass. I can not even get out of bed without pain killers. Once we have the stupid government begin regulating who should and should not get treatment, we lose the ability of doctors to decide what stregnth people need and who should have them. If I have to get refills every three days I would be at the pharmacy 10 times a month. That would really make a difference. How much #$%$ should the government stick their nose into, not my medical treatment! I believe our rights and our indivigual freedoms have been losing ground over the past 20 years and now they propose controls on doctors to treat patients. That is not the answer. Punishment for drug offenses and selling stolen prescriptions should be the answer, not punishing the people who need help to live a semi normal life.

A one us. health official says this. Triple in 10 years. And he says people in acute should only be given a 3 day supply? So sick of desperate people who want to make the internet. I have constant pain in my shoulder and have no insurance and the only way I can work is to take a half pain pill before work and after and that is all I take. If the meds are denied me, then I will no longer be able to work and will have to go on foodstamps and section 8 to keep a roof over my head and food on table. ps. right shoulder pain and need a mri on it but can't afford it and know need surgery to fix it! This pos article pizzes me off!

I live with severe pain everyday of my life. I CAN'T get any dr to give me pain meds. I don't know how all these people manage to get a hold of enough to kill them. I wish I was able to get enough to lessen the pain from time to time but all the drs I know are too afraid to write a script.

Fact - You can NOT overdose on marijuana. FACT - Marijuana is not physically addictive, no withdraw when use ceases. FACT - Marijuana is an effective pain killer as well as treatment for side effects from kemo. FACT - Pharm companies do not want people growing a cheap, non-addictive pain killer. FACT - opiate pain medication changes ones brain and ANYONE can become addicted. FACT - no one smokes pot then beats on their wife, but they sure do on alcohol. FACT - Alcohol is far more dangerous to the user and others then pot has ever been. There are people who truly need narcotic pain meds. I needed them for a few months with a serious back injury and they were the only thing that worked. I do not smoke marijuana and still wouldn't have if it was prescribed because I am a police officer, I would be fired. I would much rather deal with people who are high on pot then drunks. Have had to fight with numerous, angry drunks on duty yet NEVER with someone who was high on marijuana. You anti pot people have been feed lies. The only crime is that marijuana is illegal.
