International Hug Day
I come from a family of huggers, so for me, reaching out my arms and encircling a friend or loved one is just an extension of saying hello. But for some, hugging doesn't come as naturally. And that's too bad, since hugging has been shown to improve our health. It may even save our lives!
A study at the University of North Carolina shows that each time we hug our levels of oxytocin increase and our blood pressure decreases. Since high blood pressure is one of the leading causes of heart disease, hugging is an all-natural way to stay heart healthy.
Today is "International Hug Day," and the best way to celebrate is to hug it out! When you finally let go, why not watch Kate Winslet and Leonardo DiCaprio embrace in the best movie hug ever in "Titanic?" You can check out the film's trailers on Yahoo! Movies.
National Cookie Day
What's your favorite kind of cookie? Chocolate chip, oatmeal raisin, peanut butter? Well, according to a straw poll by the Brown Eyed Baker, her readers chose chocolate chip, followed by chocolate, and then by oatmeal chocolate chip. Hmm … I think I detect a theme!
Today is "National Cookie Day," and it's a great time to break out the flour, sugar and eggs for a batch of your favorite confections. If you'd like to try something new, here are some awesome recipes from Yahoo! Shine.
Santa's List Day
Dec. 4 may seem a little late to start worrying about whether you're on Santa's "naughty" or "nice" list, but it's better late than never. Today is "Santa's List Day," and reminds us to embrace the holiday spirit with a good attitude and jolly disposition.
Being happy doesn't just ensure your spot on the nice list though. Researchers estimate that "laughing 100 times offers an aerobic workout equivalent to 10 minutes on a rowing machine or 15 minutes on an exercise bike."
Wear Brown Shoes Day
In the realm of wacky holidays, this one is right up there with the best of them. It's "Wear Brown Shoes Day." Why? Why not?
This holiday simply refers to the color of your shoes as opposed to the maker, like Brown Shoes or Buster Brown Shoes. They can be sneakers, boat shoes, wingtips or flip-flops, just as long as they're brown.
Here are GQ's rules for men who are a bit tentative about wearing brown shoes:
* Start with chocolate brown
* Polish them well
* Wear them with a gray suit
