Deer me: Tourists tangle with stags at London park

BUSHY PARK, England (AP) — They call it the Beast of Bushy.

For the past week, this massive, short-tempered stag has been charging into British headlines, goring a man in the middle of a picnic and chasing one woman through the brush.

The stag's rampage has cast a shadow of fear over Bushy Park, a quiet suburban expanse of tree-lined avenues and ponds popular with retirees and stroller-pushing parents some 13 miles (21 kilometers) southwest of central London.

"I've been in and out of the park for 20 years, and this is the first time I've heard of people being attacked in such quick succession," said Robert Piper, a sports and wildlife photographer whose dramatic shots of the angry deer have kept it in the headlines.

The beast didn't seem so fearsome Wednesday, when it was seen lazing in the mud and long grass across from the park's model boat pond.

"He's had a rough couple of weeks," joked Piper. But as he inched forward to take a few last photos, the stag lifted a pair of sharpened antlers into the sky.

"Let's not push our luck," he said.

Bushy Park holds 320 deer, which roam freely across a 445-hectare (1,100-acre) area of meadows and forested areas that look much as they did when King Henry VIII used to hunt there.

They are generally gentle creatures — until fall's rutting season.

"Every year there's the odd incident," says park veteran Dick Hill, a 64-year-old retiree with binoculars dangling from his neck. "There have been quite a few of them this year."

Hill said a shortage of female deer could be to blame for the aggressive behavior, although a park official said the unseasonably warm weather — which drew large numbers of visitors at the height of the rutting season — was the deciding factor. The official asked not to be named.

Whatever the cause, this year's stag attacks have produced some dramatic photos. One showed a middle-aged man being bowled over by a charging deer in a picnic area. Hill, who was there, said the man emerged covered in blood.

Another incident, this one witnessed by Piper, showed a woman racing for her life, with the stag so close that its antlers lifted up her black leather jacket. She managed to escape after Piper distracted the animal.

"It was a happy ending," he said. "But it could easily have been a goring."

London's feisty press have traced the path of the stag's rampage under articles bearing names such as "Stag Fright."

Hill said the fuss was a bit overdone, and in any case, the Beast of Bushy's days may be numbered.

The park's deer are regularly culled.

They ought to get him a mate.

That's probably why he's chasing people out, so the females will feel safe to show themselves and be approached by him.

European (and New Zealand) Red Deer are in fact, European ELK......ALL Elk are members of the 'deer' family, as are their larger cousins, Moose. The German term for Moose is 'Elsch' (Elk) and the term for elk is "Hirsch"..........my point is that you can compare Red Deer varieties from all over the world with other Elk species from Asia and North America and guess what people: you can see the DIRECT similarities/relationships.....different subspecies same Group Species (genus? It's been a while since I've taken Biology 101 for the correct taxonomy nomenclature).

Colleen, you're welcome! I've been a hunter since I was 16 and for the last 20 years an avid bowhunter.....though Arthur, the worst of of those Ritis brothers, has made me put down my bow. These days and in the future, I'll have to be hunting with a rifle.

The bottom line is that no matter which sub species you look at and are interested in, the Elk Family is majestic, phenomenally tenacious, highly intelligent, endowed by the Lord with keen senses and instincts, and for those of us who love to hunt them (it's called an 'addiction' for a reason....no foolin'....Elkoholics), we never tire of seeing them, reading/learning about them.......a truly magnificent creature!

When you really think about it. There isn't much difference between this buck and a bunch of drunk men at closing time at the local bar

To all those who think that it is an elk and are so rudely calling others morons.... It is not an elk. It is a red deer, Europe does not have American type elk. They call the animal that we refer to as a moose by the name elk.

NO it's a European red deer. in the US we have Elk, they have much more hair on their necks normally very dark brown, and live high up in mountains usually, and are very people skiddish. possibly quite a bit larger than these red deer. Elk are quite huge.

It is a European Red Deer (Cervus Elaphus). If Britons hadn't exterminated the native dragons, this population would be naturally controlled.

      Thanks Dave ;o)

If you don't want to be around animals stay out of the parks and the zoos. And for Pete's sake don't go in there smelling like them. Believe me some of this cologne smells like deer pee.
    • Molly  •  7 mths ago
Mabe they need to post a few signs. Stay out of the park during mateing season the deer would like a little privacay, or Horney stags on the loose enter at your own risk
    • 1  •  7 mths ago
All men get cranky and aggressive when we need to get laid. Why would a Stag be any different.
    • bb  •  7 mths ago
He is just protective of his women, definately don't want anyone to mess with him or to be in his territory.
    • joyce  •  7 mths ago
American Elk are no slouches either, huge, sharp horns, and hard to hunt. the sight of one to someone who has never seen tham is exciting. they're majestic animals also. but tend to be more skiddish.

Beautiful animal, the people need to respect and appreciate such wild beasts, without turning their backs on them, or trying to get to close to them.

It is not an elk...it is a red stag....regularly refered to as deer in Europe...Just like caribou are called moose...different names in different countries. Our elk are only found in North America.
