TAMPA, Fla. (AP) — An attorney for a Tampa military mom accused of killing her two teenagers told jurors that the woman was legally insane when she pulled the trigger.
Defense attorney Jennifer Spradley told jurors Thursday during her closing argument that there is no dispute that Julie Schenecker shot her two children in January 2011, but they need to focus on her mental illness and whether she knew right from wrong. That is one legal standard in Florida for finding a defendant not guilty by reason of insanity.
Prosecutors argued earlier that the 53-year-old Schenecker shot her 16-year-old daughter Calyx and her 13-year-old son Beau because she was afraid her Army officer husband was about to divorce her and she didn't want to be alone.
