Del. pediatrician gets life for abusing patients

GEORGETOWN, Del. (AP) — Former Delaware pediatrician Earl Bradley will spend the rest of his life in prison for committing horrific acts of sexual abuse against scores of young patients over more than a decade, a judge ruled Friday.

Bradley, 58, showed no emotion as Judge William Carpenter Jr. sentenced him to 14 life sentences without parole for 14 counts of first-degree rape. Bradley also was sentenced to more than 160 years in prison for multiple counts of assault and sexual exploitation of a child.

Under state law, a life sentence is mandatory for a person convicted of rape against three or more separate victims.

"You will never be in a position to harm a child again," Carpenter told Bradley, saying the serial pedophile had violated the trust of his patients and their families, the morals of the southern Delaware community of Lewes, and his oath as a medical professional to do no harm to his patients.

"You have severely violated that trust, and you have shamed your profession," Carpenter told Bradley.

Before sentencing Bradley, the judge addressed the families of his victims, some of whom have struggled with broken relationships stemming from their ordeal and guilt for allowing the doctor to be alone with their children.

"You must realize that you are not at fault, and that you and your children have done nothing wrong," Carpenter said.

Some women in the courtroom wept as prosecutor Paula Ryan recounted Bradley's crimes and asked Carpenter to impose the maximum sentences, saying "every minute of every day should be as difficult as possible for Earl Bradley to endure ..."

"No amount of jail time, no punishment, will ever be sufficient enough to compensate for the damage that Earl Bradley did to these children, to their families, to the community in Lewes, to medical and health care professionals, to every single person in the state of Delaware," Ryan said.

"Earl Bradley committed unspeakable acts upon those who could not speak for themselves," she added. ".... To make indescribable and horrific matters even worse, he videotaped these incidents for his own perverse pleasure, endlessly editing and copying, permanently memorializing his attacks on these children for his own twisted collection."

Public defender Dean Johnson did not address the court, and Bradley also chose not to speak.

"It's the sentence that was expected," Johnson said afterward, adding that Bradley "is putting great stock" in the defense's appeal of a ruling by Carpenter allowing the videotapes of Bradley's sexual assaults to be admitted as evidence.

After escaping prosecution following two previous police investigations of complaints of improper contact with patients, Bradley was arrested in December 2009 after a 2-year-old girl complained to her mother after an office visit that the doctor had hurt her. The child had made a similar complaint to her father after an earlier visit.

Bradley's sister, who worked in his office, had told police in 2005 that her brother was bipolar and taking medication from the office, and that several parents had complained about Bradley inappropriately touching patients.

Two pediatricians interviewed by police in 2005 also told investigators about complaints from Bradley's former patients.

Acting upon the 2009 complaint, investigators finally arrested Bradley and searched his Lewes office complex, decorated with Disney themes and miniature amusement park rides. They seized dozens of homemade videos from an outbuilding where Bradley had lured patients with promises of treats and toys.

Bradley's public defenders presented no defense at his trial, opting instead for a swift verdict so they could more quickly appeal Carpenter's decision to allow the videos as evidence. The defense contends they were improperly seized by investigators acting outside the scope of their search warrant.

Johnson said Friday that he would file notice of the appeal within days.

After Carpenter allowed the tapes into evidence, Bradley waived his right to a jury trial. At a one-day bench trial in June, prosecutors presented testimony from two police investigators and gave Carpenter more than 13 hours of videos showing sex crimes against more than 80 victims, most of whom were toddlers.

In his testimony, state police detective Scott Garland described the rapes caught on video as brutal and violent. He explained how some videos showed Bradley with his hands wrapped tightly around the heads of young children, violently forcing them to perform oral sex on him. When Bradley was finished with such assaults, he would lift up the young victims by the head and throw them several feet onto a couch in the rear of the building where investigators found the damning videos, Garland testified. Bradley sometimes would perform "rescue breathing" and chest rubs to revive the semiconscious victims, the detective added.

Attorney General Beau Biden, who cited his desire to see Bradley's prosecution through its conclusion as the reason he opted not to run for the U.S. Senate seat once held by his father, said the state had achieved its first objective of ensuring that Bradley will spend the rest of his life in prison.

Biden said the second objective is helping the families of Bradley's victims cope with what has happened to them.

"That's a job that never ends," he said.

Its too easy to kill these criminals! Its better that he remains in prison for the rest of his life. Most likely separated from the general population in solitary confinement. Don't forget that this animal was a doctor and he probably paid off his lawyers good money to keep him separated from the general population. Just know that this man can no longer harm a living soul again. His days will be spent staring at white walls forever. There is nothing more horrible than that. Life imprisonment....Justice was served! Thank God!

I hope that when this animal gets to prison he is in general population, let the other prisoners have there fun, maybe the doc wont last to long.. we all know how most prisoners feel about child abusers...

if anyone does this to my child i will find him before the law gets him so that i can tie him up, break each of his fingers one by one, snap his knees backwards, castrate him, cut off his eyelids and let him sit like that for a while before skinning his face off and shoving a dadao up his rectum.

I wish we could just kill people like this scumbag instead of spending tax payer money on feeding them and giving them medical care while they are in prison. Too bad we can't just shoot or hang these useless pieces of trash.

The prisoners will take care of that scumbag! He won't last long there!

Death is an end to punishment. A person like this should be held by the neck and revived when he passes... just as he did with those children.

The ACLU has released their statement, which basically reads.."We don't really see a problem here".
      • Anthony Edwards 9 mths ago
Oh really? Where's the statement? I went looking for it. No dice. You're a sicko to talk down on an organization that would go to bat for you if you were unjustly convicted...

You cant trust anyone doctors, preist or police #$%$ ers use the position to take advantage
      • Fanboy! 9 mths ago
Name any profession or trade in which a person might not abuse their trust or authority to do the same. Name even one. I mean, Christ, you didn't even mention teachers, who have several well-documented child abuse issues at various times. And the list just keeps going.

Blind trust is stupid. Anyone who has it in others is just begging to be taken advantage of.

A life full of distrust is not one worth living though. This guy was one case in millions. Never blindly trust, but try not to let your life be ruled by fear.

I was actually reading the independent review by the Dean of Wesley Law ( think thats where she was from). According to patient statements, alot of the sexual assaults were actually committed right infront of the patient's parents. But ofcourse, he blocked their view of actually what he was doing. I worked in an urgent care facility, and I had to be in the room, next to the doctor so I could see EXACTLY what he was doing while he did any type of exam done on vaginal area, pap's..ect and I had to sign off on the Dr's assessment sheet that I was in the room. observed the exam and nothing inappropriate occured.
One MAJOR things i would like to see is that a hospital can not conduct physicans inquires by having " PEER REVIEW". This means, the hospitals can not censor a physican or firing one, under raps where the public is not permitted, and no explaination is provided. Even if you retain an attorney where NO ONE can find out what was discussed, what the out come.
A surgeon in Sussex County preformmed an elective procedure. When I started thinking about her being in Milford Memorial instead of Beebe hospital, We were just told he left ( had a hush hush peer review in BEEBE hopsital,) I tried to find out why he lost his prevelges, but unable. My mother died after suffering for 8 days. And here's another bit of info, UNLESS, your doctor is a hospitalist, or similar group, the actual hospital is not liable. for any misconduct.(or really anything).
I am a nurse, and any nurse will talk you, if someone even makes an accusation against you, your name get posted to the nursing board website. Case closed.
Oh yeah, my mom was 54 years old, best mom anyone could ask for, we grew up very poor
but she always did what she had to. And like I said before, sufford for 8 days while she went through different organ failure.. and then died. I was 35 years old. Our family misses her and has not felt completel . But that's a whole new blog. Bradley will hopefull meet the same fate as Jeffrey Dahlmer ( yeah, i know i spelled it wrong) after ofcourse being tortured, mutlilated. ROT IN HELL YOU DISCUSTING, FILTHY, SOB...

You are so full of it. Give it a rest windbag.

You would think an educated nurse would at least be able to spell. I think your little story is pure fiction.
      • Anthony Edwards 9 mths ago
Nurses don't have to have perfect spelling... I think you people are wrong, or just refusing to take a person at their word. If she isn't lying let her vent she deserves it. If she is, who cares..

It's not surprising it took so long to catch this 'thing', people still think that doctor equals god, there's plenty of sickos that are doctors. Pediatricians violate their oath to 'do no harm' by ritually mutilating infants by torturing them via ripping off their foreskin- many don't use any anesthesia, and any that may be used is always inadequate. Doctors violently rape infant boys every day in the US, but since the ghastly surgery is culturally accepted, nothing is done. Circumcision is violence, mutilation and rape, yet people let doctors do that to their kids all the time. And, they defend the practice of violence against their kids, if it was culturally accepted to have a doctor beat your child "for their own good", people would do it and defend it. It's sad how far this monster got to go before the cops would even seriously investigate it! Never trust a doctor alone with your child.
      • Anthony Edwards 9 mths ago
A circumcision is performed generally to avoid infection. People are known to trust people in positions of authority. My own circumcision was performed because of an infection that could have led to amputation.
      • Jo 9 mths ago
Back in biblical times, were they mutilating and raping young boys? What form of anesthesia were they using then?
      • nrs4life 9 mths ago
Circumcision is a very necessary procedure. As a nurse I have taken care of men who did not have that done as a child/infant. It causes a significant amount of discomfort...and Jennifer you are correct, people do hold doctors on a higher than God position and particularly in Sussex County Delaware. When I filed a malpractice suit against a surgeon, my attorney said he would never try a doctor down there (lower Delaware) because the protect thier doctors...

I am just wondering if he was planning to harm children all through his schooling to become a Dr. and that is why he chose Pediatrics, or if after time this perversion just happened.
    • Watchmen  •  9 mths ago
If I were one of those kids parents I'd want the charges thrown out, if it meant I could get my hands on him for a couple hours. They would be the worst and last hours of his miserable life.
    • BPP66-69  •  9 mths ago
What's up with white men and sexual perversions? Maybe we should label all white men sex offenders/pedophiles, the way we label all black men drug dealers/criminals. While we're at it, let's have a war on pedophiles the way we have a war on drugs. That way, when these kids grow up and ask why there wasn't more done to protect them, we won't have to tell them that all the resources were used to make them safe from the evil black inner-city crack dealer.
    • A Yahoo! User  •  9 mths ago
Disgusting! My heart and prayers go out to these children, victims of a best, and to their families. It is beyond my comprehension how a person would think this behavior to be okay, and especially for a doctor to behave in this manner.

Do not post any more comments stating that only Muslims do horrible stuff like this one. Learned the lesson? Remember this name: Earl Bradley. Anyways, I will be there to refresh your memory.

    • D  •  9 mths ago
So why would the parents of these victims allow any doctor to examine their child without being in the room with their child or let this sicko lure their child to an outbuilding at the rear of the premesis? The parents are just as much to blame here.
