Delaware bill would allow consumers to purchase raw milk on farms
DOVER, Del. (AP) -- State lawmakers have introduced a bill to end Delaware's ban on the sale of raw milk.
The bill, introduced last week, would allow unpasteurized milk and milk products to be sold to consumers, but only at the property where the raw milk is produced.
The state Department of Health and Social Services, in consultation with the Department of Agriculture, would establish a program for people wanting to sell raw milk to obtain state permits.
A person holding a permit would have to submit to inspections and post a conspicuous notice that raw milk does not provide the protection of pasteurization.
Delaware currently is one of 20 states that outlaw the sale of raw milk, which federal health officials urge consumers to avoid because it can carry harmful bacteria.
