Denmark to approve gay weddings in church

COPENHAGEN, Denmark (AP) — Denmark's government wants to allow same-sex couples to get married in formal church weddings, instead of the short blessing ceremonies that the state Lutheran Church currently offers.

The government said Wednesday it's preparing to launch a proposal in February to change Denmark's marriage laws.

In 1989, Denmark became the first country to allow registered gay partnerships. Since 1997, gay couples in Denmark can be wed in special blessing ceremonies at the end of the regular church service.

Denmark's Church Affairs Ministry says the law change would put Denmark on par with countries including Iceland and Sweden that allow full wedding ceremonies for gay couples.

Danish clergy would retain the right to refuse to wed gay couples without sanctions.

Denmark has allowed gay marriages since 1989? Has anyone informed god about this yet...he'll be sending storm after plague after tornado after drought upon Denmark for this! lol.

@Hello.... God has no problem with gay marriage, that would be the homophobic bigots.
    • OpenMinded  •  6 mths ago
Any heterosexual who feels that his or her marriage is somehow "threatened" or "devalued" because two gay men or two lesbians wish to be married needs to look to their OWN house and seriously re-evaluate their own marriage. If two complete strangers that they will likely NEVER meet are somehow a "threat" to them, there are deeper, underlying issues at stake (not to mention a WHOLE lot of insecurity). Gay men are not a threat to heterosexual marriages. Other heterosexuals are.

And you know, for a group of people who CLAIM to find homosexuality SOOO repellant, the folks who claim to be "disgusted" sure do spend a LOT of time fantasizing about what they THINK we do in the privacy of our own bedrooms. They also seem to spend countless hours tirelessly searching out GLBT-themed news stories and commenting on them ad nauseum. i think the correct word for their condition would be "obsessed."
      • OpenMinded 6 mths ago
Wow, five thumbs down and no comments? That speaks of "intellectual cowardice" as a good Friend of mine puts it.
      • HUH 6 mths ago
As ballbusta said...homosexuality is NOT normal. It is an abomination to God.
      • OpenMinded 6 mths ago
It may not be normal for YOU, but for countless other folks? Heck yeah. God made gay people the same as he made heterosexuals. And if He has a problem with them, that's for Him to decide, not you.

Top Ten Signs You're a Foolish Atheist

        10. You vigorously deny the existence of God, yet you frequently blame Him for all the "evils" in the world, all the natural disasters, and everything else under the sun that is wrong in modern society.

        9. You feel insulted and "dehumanized" when creationists say that people were created in the image and likeness of God, but you have no problem with the evolutionist claim that we all evolved from slime by a cosmic accident.

        8. You criticize fundamental Christians who believe the Bible, and say that it can't possibly be true because it's just a book written by mere men, yet you never question any of Darwin's writings or Richard Dawkins' books.

        7. You say the Bible is full of fairytales and fables, yet you believe all life forms including plants, trees, insects, birds, fish, reptiles and mammals evolved from one species into another - As if evolution isn’t the biggest fairytale of them all.

        6. You laugh at the Supernatural, even though scientists have calculated the odds of life forming by natural processes to be estimated less than 1 chance in 10 to the 40,ooo power – But you find nothing wrong with believing that billions of years full of random mutations would result in the impossible.

        5. You accuse fundamental Christians of being intolerant, judgmental and hateful, while you foam at the mouth calling them freaking lunatics, ignorant, weak-minded, stupid fundies, and hateful bigots.

        4. You ignore scientific concepts like cause and effect, and you don't realize that a closed system can be defined however the observer wants, so you throw out technological phrases to try to ignore the implications of thermodynamics by saying the laws of physics are not set in stone.

        3. While all evidence, logic and reasoning point to a Creator and absolute truth, you prefer to hide behind relativism and a theory of evolution which does not, in fact, describe the creation of the universe at all, or why concepts of good and evil or morality exist.

        2. Atheism fails to adequately explain the existence of eternal, unchanging truths, for it rejects the existence of an eternal unchanging mind. Atheism cannot offer man any eternal significance whatsoever. Temporary meaning in life is insufficient, for our accomplishments die with the death of the universe -- there is no ultimate purpose in a universe void of God.

        1. You spend all your spare time on religion threads fighting something you don't believe in religiously. DUHEE DUHEE DUHEE

The Danes have always been a smart, compassionate people. After all, you would think the churches would apporve of commitments, love, and stable families, no?
      • HUH 6 mths ago
NO! Not when the church follows biblical law. And PLEEEEAZE don't bring up the errant priests. And please don't bring up slaves. The evil priests make up a disproportionately small part of any particular profession. And the definition of slavery at the time of Jesus was much different than today. You Tomas will find a way to support anyone that is anti-Christian. And you will always find a way to mock the numerous good things the church does. I guess you think it's funny to be so ignorant.
      • you thumbs down the truth 6 mths ago
yes tomas..you would think the church would prefer to have people in committed relationships rather than "living in sin" sadly thats not the case
-as for the poster complaining of christian persecution on these boards yet still insulting another religion.....which part of the church has the right to refuse to marry them are you missing/ignoring
      • AuditU 6 mths ago
Slavery was different in the time of Jesus? Not from what history class and facts have shown us.

I don't recall how it works in Denmark, but as long as churches accept public money (tax breaks, for example), then they need to serve all human beings. Otherwise, they are being paid while being exclusive and excluding!

Dude you cant mix reality based thinking and Religion. your god does not exist. You can either claim to be a critical thinker or have faith but you can't have both. Don't try to pseudo-science your absurd believes. Its like howling and screaming at Sköll to stop an eclipse and then trying to argue about astronomy.

This morning. I woke up, dragged myself to the BR, showered, brushed my teeth, shaved, got dressed and drove to work. I worked all day, went to the gym and went home. NOW I ASK YOU? WHAT IS THE BIG DEAL WITH SAME SEX MARRIAGE. Live and let live, hey.. if they were costing me money then i'd be against it, but guess what?? IT DOESN'T.!!!!!!!!
    • Abc  •  6 mths ago
This shouldn't really be news, although it pleases me...live and let live.
    • steve  •  6 mths ago
Good for Denmark! This country and the others are showing the world that they are populated and governed by mature people whose religion doesn't dictate who may be formally married in church. Religion has taken over marriage and claimed it holy when in fact marriage started as a pagan ceremony in Roman times. These righteous thumpers and their obtrude, opine comments are ignorant to the true facts about marriage and instead of pragmatic statements and bigotry, should stop acting like fools and GROW UP!
