Denver Broncos’ Peyton Manning chases crowning glory in Super Bowl 50

Whether he wins or loses on Sunday, Peyton Manning has already assured himself a place in American football’s pantheon of greats. But if the veteran Denver Broncos quarterback manages to mastermind an upset over the Carolina Panthers in Super Bowl 50 it will be the crowning achievement of a career that once looked to be in terminal decline. The five-time NFL Most Valuable Player has battled through to Sunday’s showpiece after arguably the most challenging season of his 18-year career which included a mid-term slump that saw him benched as Broncos starter.

There is no question it’s important to me, it’s very personal to me.

Manning

Manning,39, poised to become the oldest starting quarterback in Super Bowl history, faced a bleak future in 2011 when neck surgeries left him struggling to throw properly, forcing him to miss the entire season with the Indianapolis Colts, who eventually cut him in March 2012. Yet he went on to relaunch his career successfully with the Broncos. But Manning’s fourth Super Bowl appearance is also shrouded by the poignant knowledge that it may well his final game. Talk of retirement invariably invites discussion of Manning’s place in the pecking order of great quarterbacks, many placing him behind the likes of Tom Brady and Joe Montana. Still others reject the idea that Manning needs a second Super Bowl win to cement his place in the annals of the game.

This is not a make-or-break game for Peyton. His legacy is already set…He’s already going to go down as one of the greatest players to ever play the game so if anything, this will do is just add to that legacy.
