The Denver affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure says it has been granted an exception of the foundation's newly announced policy of no longer funding Planned Parenthood's breast screening procedures. Here are the details.
* The Denver affiliate says that it has received the exception in order to fund Planned Parenthood for the April 1, 2012, to March 31, 2013, grant cycle, pending an approval of the organization's grant application. The affiliate says it closely monitors all of its grantees to ensure that funds are being spent on only breast health programs through 6-month, 9-month and final reports, as well as site visits and quarterly meetings.
* According to Denver Komen, in 2010, the grant provided to local Planned Parenthood clinics accounted for one-fifth of the breast cancers discovered through Komen funding in the Denver area. Komen funding also provided breast health/ cancer education to 2,264 women in the Denver area, 601 clinical breast examinations and 57 mammograms.
* Komen Denver has spent $28 million in Colorado communities in the past 20 years, with 75 percent of its net proceeds from fundraising going to local programs. Because of state budget reductions, the community is looking to Komen Denver to help provide services to 5,500 women who will otherwise have no access to those services, the Affiliate states.
* According to Vicki Cowart, the president and CEO of Planned Parenthood of the Rocky Mountains, Denver Komen's grant applied to Planned Parenthood health centers in the cities of Greeley, Aurora and Fort Collins. 84 percent of the patients at those centers had no health insurance and 62 percent were living at or below 150 percent of the federally defined poverty level.
* Planned Parenthood of the Rocky Mountains, which serves about 123,000 people each year through its 28 health centers in Colorado, New Mexico, Southern Nevada and Wyoming, says it has established a breast health fund to provide breast cancer screening and care to those whose access to these services has been jeopardized due to the Komen withdrawal of funding. Anyone interested in donating can do so by contacting the development office at the number found on the Planned Parenthood of the Rocky Mountains website.
