Desperate, sick Indonesians use railroad 'therapy'

JAKARTA, Indonesia (AP) — Ignoring the red-and-white danger sign, Sri Mulyati walks slowly to the train tracks outside Indonesia's bustling capital, lies down and stretches her body across the rails.

Like the nearly dozen others lined up along the track, the 50-year-old diabetes patient has all but given up on doctors and can't afford the expensive medicines they prescribe.

In her mind, she has only one option left: electric therapy.

"I'll keep doing this until I'm completely cured," said Mulyati, twitching visibly as an oncoming passenger train sends an extra rush of current racing through her body.

She leaps from tracks as it approaches and then, after the last carriage rattles slowly by, climbs back into position.

Pseudo-medical treatments are wildly popular in many parts of Asia — where rumors about those miraculously cured after touching a magic stone or eating dung from sacred cows can attract hundreds, sometimes thousands.

That may be especially true in Indonesia, where chronic funding shortages and chaotic decentralization efforts since the 1998 ouster of longtime dictator Suharto have left many disillusioned with the state-sponsored health system, said Marius Widjajarta, chairman of the Indonesian Health Consumers Empowerment Foundation.

Medical experts say there is no evidence lying on the rails does any good.

But Mulyati insists it provides more relief for her symptoms — high-blood pressure, sleeplessness and high cholesterol — than any doctor has since she was first diagnosed with diabetes 13 years ago.

She turned to train track therapy last year after hearing a rumor about an ethnic Chinese man who was partially paralyzed by a stroke going to the tracks to kill himself, but instead finding himself cured.

It's a story that's been told and retold in Indonesia.

Until recently, more than 50 people would show up at the Rawa Buaya tracks every day. But the numbers have dropped since police and the state-run railroad company erected a warning sign and threatened penalties of up to three months in prison or fines of $1,800.

No one has been arrested yet, and none of the participants in train track therapy has died.

But the dedicated dozen a day who still come say they have no plans to stop.

"They told us not to do it anymore, but what else can I do," said Hadi Winoto, a 50-year-old stroke victim who has trouble walking.

"I want to be cured, so I have to come back."

When an individual is desperate for a cure to his ailments, he will try anything. This so-called railroad ' therapy' is just like a placebo. If the individual thinks that he is getting cured with that 'theraphy' then he feels better physically. To these people, perception is reality.

"Pseudo-medical treatments are wildly popular in many parts of Asia"

Only in Asia? We have hundreds of millions of idiots in the states who believe in miracle cures (pray to Jesus to cure your cancer), homeopathy (drink water to cure your cancer), eat nothing but plants to cure your cancer, put a funnel of burning earwax in your ear to cure back pains, strap magnets to fix your heart disease, put on wrist bands to stop being fat and obese, etc etc etc

There are idiots on every continent.

that is nothing wrong, pure psychology and placebo effect which could be 60% as powerful as the real cure.

My mom has diabetes and other health problems and she can't afford her medication and she's in the u.s. It's sad that i have to watch her take only half the pills she's supposed to because she has no health coverage. I feel bad that they have it worse but there are people like that all over the world. But they shouldn't do that, it's dangerous.

If you have any extra money you could maybe help her buy medication.

We should really be outraged because of all our tax money going overseas. America is going down the drain fast. Keeping OUR MONEY HERE might prevent that. Oh - and reducing CORPORATE GREED might also be beneficial...

I'm not doing too hot money wise either. Believe me I would if I could. I love my mom very much and I'm outraged that she's treated so horribly.

This happens due to the government igonarance of people health care. Here we don't have health care. That's why many poors look for "alternative ways".

Government sponsored health care bankrupted their county's healthcare budget. Just like our current Medicare program is way way beyond what the projected future budget for it when it started.

I just want to die peacefully in my sleep like my grandfather did......not like those 24 other screaming people who were on the bus he was driving.

A dozen people? Hardly a story. You could find 12 people doing just about anything.

Satan is really busy in this world. Jesus Christ is a choice like all other religions. He's not forcing anyone to do anything. We can choose to be religious or secular; I chose Jesus Christ as the Way, the Truth, and the Life. Politics and prayers don't match. Do you know your History? It's an individual choice. Those who believe can pray and ask for guidance through the Holy Spirit. We need to pray for those in authority for our world is dying. Believe or not!

tell me how the train can not only send electric current through the tracks but can increase the current seemingly at will....How? elect power produced on locomotives is used to power the traction motors that turn the wheels...any surge through the tracks would cause motor failure and it would happen so fast..well way to fast to feel it
      • Prasanna 9 mths ago
There will be a surge of earthing-current when the motors are operating (as against when the train is stopped). Also, the movement of the train could cause the tracks to vibrate somewhat.
      • Nick Longhair 9 mths ago
The traction current is supplied to the train via overhead wires (or third rail) which are insulated from the ground. After passing through the traction motors the current returns through the rails, which are normally grounded. Even with the grounding, when you have high intensity currents (hundreds of amperes) fed into the rails you get a potential of tens or even hundreds of volts between the rails and the ground. These potentials dissipate over a few hundred yards. Touching the rail near an electric train - even if the train is not moving - may get you a nomination for a Darwin award. Of course those seeking the kind of treatments described in the article may get completely rid of their ailments if they are not quick enough.

That sounds like a pretty weak "third rail"...the ones in the NYC subway will "cure" you immediately!!!!!

I can tie both these cultures together using just 3 words, "GREED IS UNIVERSAL" honestly it's no different here in this soon-to-be "Third World Country." Fact, scores of elderly people are now struggling with high mortgage payments & ever increasing utilities bills leaving little for any medication. Due to that insatiable greed of the "$Pharmaceutical - Establishment$", these dear people can longer afford the outrageous cost of that insulin, or any drug for that matter. $10.59 per pill? that's just so #$%$ criminal... (1) Example: an elderly gentleman froze to death last winter because he had to make a choice. Fuel oil or the pain medication he so desperately needed for a advance form of rheumatoid arthritis. I have read & thus, responded to hundreds of heartbreaking blogs over the years, each one painting a dismal picture for the elderly living in this "once upon a time" rich empire. The bottom line is easy to discern here, because greed is the only motivation seniors can expect most if not all of that pain suppressing medication to double or even triple in the years ahead. I hope that self-induced electric therapy cures them all & for keeps too......

Hey, they can come to the US and get free health care.....the Middle Class tax payers will take care of the bill.

I have been to indonesia several times and for a few months at a time, sorry to say but not much has changed since suharto left. It is still a completly corrupt country with ALL the wealth belonging to the government.

i once licked the third rail and it cleared up my acne instantly.
    • Jeffrey B  •  9 mths ago
Yup...a train barreling down the track will cure what ails ya :)

I pray they are all cured of their illnesses.
