Despite critics who claim waste, Michele Bachmann supports $690 million bridge project in district

Minnesota Republican Rep. Michele Bachmann may be a crusader against government waste, but the GOP presidential candidate is standing firm against critics who say the construction of a new $690 million bridge that she supports over the St. Croix River in her Minnesota district is wasteful.

Critics complain that the proposed bridge is too expensive and dries up money for other transportation projects. It has also been compared to the infamous proposed “bridge to nowhere” in Alaska, where federal dollars were sought to build a bridge to an island where only a few dozen people lived.

The proposed St. Croix River Bridge would connect the Minnesota city of Stillwater, where just 20,000 people live, to an unincorporated town across the river in Wisconsin. What’s striking about Bachmann’s support for it, government waste watchdogs say, is her reputation as a relentless critic of wasteful government spending.

“This is the height of hypocrisy,” David Williams, the president of the Taxpayers Protection Alliance, told The Daily Caller. “As a self-acclaimed fiscally conservative member of Congress you can’t pick and choose which projects are questionable and which are not just because a project happens to be in your district. Being a budget hawk also means that you have to scrutinize projects that are in your district or state.”

But Becky Rogness, a spokeswoman for Bachmann’s congressional office, said safety issues are at play and this “should have been built years ago.”

“The current Stillwater Lift Bridge is 80 years old,” Rogness told TheDC. “It’s sufficiency rating is worse than the rating of the Minneapolis bridge that collapsed in 2007. And it’s carrying thousands of more cars a day than it was designed to do.”

Legislation moving the project forward passed the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee on Thursday. It now goes before both the full House and Senate. Because the bridge goes through the federally-protected St. Croix River valley, the legislation grants an exemption from the Wild and Scenic Rivers Act. (RELATED: Bachmann: Obama violating the Constitution, the Tenth Commandment)

“The crossing project that H.R. 850 facilitates was ready to begin years ago, but lawsuits by radical environmental groups have stopped it,” Rogness said. “Those unnecessary delays have caused the cost to rise from $80 million dollars in 1992 to its current price tag. Standing in the way of starting this project is not going to do taxpayers any good. In addition, both states are ready to fund this project.”

Bachmann has found an unlikely partner in Minnesota Democratic Sen. Amy Klobuchar, who is sponsoring companion legislation in the Senate. But one critic, Minnesota Democratic Rep. Betty McCollum, worries that spending this money on just one bridge isn’t ideal when there are plenty of other bridges that need attention in the state.

“We can put people to work right now fixing, repairing, replacing a part of the over 1,000 bridges across Minnesota that are structurally deficient,” McCollum told the Star Tribune. “The Stillwater bridge is not the only bridge in that category.”

The only time a politician thinks spending is wasteful is when it's not in their district.

whoa.....a bid that went from 80 million to 690 million in 10 years? How many of you had your wages go from $8.00 per hour to $69.00 per hour in the last 10 years? Heck, most of us are making less than we did 10 years ago, if we are lucky enough to still have a job. I KNOW the labor costs have NOT risen that much, my question is "who" is providing the materials for this project. That MUST be where the increase in costs is coming from because we know that THE JOB CREATORS would NEVER take advantage of the tax paying public in that manner!!

      M. Bachman support for a bridge replacement reflects Obama's fed capital infusion plans into the US infrastructure but she opposes anything Obama. Is she becoming a flipo-flopper like Romney?

Michele Bachmann needs to answer this question DIRECTLY: "how do you justify receiving $500,000 in farm subsidies when you claim to be against welfare, socialism, and big government?"

HYPOCRITE !!!, but why should she be any different from the rest of congress. Cuts must be made but not for my pet projects. Typical teabagger, Everyone must cut back but me !!! That is the real problem in this congress. They all say "CUTS MUST BE MADE", so lets cut Soc. Sec., Medicare, medicaid and any other service available to the people who need them most. But god forbid that the wealthy should have to pay their fair share of taxes on ALL types of income ie,,, investments, capital gains, etc, etc, etc. Anything to further victimize the middle-class, seniors and working poor to benefit the wealthy and big business, They won't close loopholes for big business. WHY IS CORPORATE WELFARE ACCEPTABLE ???. Big businesses are raking in record profits, Oil Compaines, Insurance Companies, Pharmaceutical & Medical companies, all recording record profits. The middle-class, seniors & working poor are losing ground every day while the wealthy and big business do not. What is wrong with this country that the non-wealthy are just sheep to be fleeced, with the blessing of OUR GOVERNMENT, NO LESS, (gopers) to benefit the top 5 % of this country. It is becoming clearer everyday that the people with all the money now make the laws, and that the only people deserving of any help in this economy are the wealthy and big business. SOMETHING HAS TO CHANGE, SOON or there will be no middle-class,seniors and working poor left. But it is evident that is what the repugs and the wealthy want isn't it ?? !!!!

from 80m to 690m....jeeezzzzz..just goes to show how many people/companies are having to be paid off with our money before a government project can happen.. most everyone involved with the government are greedy #$%$ that would be locked up if it weren't government sponsored theft...we need to make sure every person coming up for election with more than 2 terms in office are voted out NOW. Make term limits, legislature's pay determined by the voters, all laws/regulations apply to legislatures as it does to us. i could go on and on but the people know what needs to be done. we just have to do it at the voting booth..

Since the bridge does go across state lines I do think it should be a federal project. Having said that I have some issues with the project, the first being her obvious hypocrisy. The second is the cost. I would like to see an investigation done on the contractor won this $690 million bid. Are they one of her donors? How many bids were offered on this project? Also, Interstate 94 is 7 miles south of this bridge, restricting the existing bridge to passenger vehicles and light trucks would be wise until an infrastructure improvement bill is passed in congress. And if this bridge is in such bad condition that is needs replaced immediately they could bring down construction costs by building it for passenger vehicles only. Commercial vehicles can use Interstate 94.

Go figure Michele Bachmann campaigns to cut Medicare and Social Security for Americas Seniors and Disabled and Programs for Americans in need then requests $690 million for a bridge that leads from a community of 20,000 in Minnesota to an UNINCORPORATED town in Wisconsin That's an UNINCORPORATED Town Places in this category are Unincorporated and DO NOT HAVE any Formally Organized Municipal Government, but rather are within the Political Jurisdiction of other municipalities.....Typical Fiscal Conservative Tea Party Republican I Want What I Want but you Cant Have What you Need I hope they build areas to live under the new bridge at least make it Liveable for the new homeless that will need a place to sleep....

A NEW PARTY OF THE MIDDLE CLASS

America needs a new political party of the middle class to control government and the judiciary for the people. The already rich have proven themselves incapable of overcoming greed and avarice in their guidance of public policy and are simply too corrupted by the influence of big money to be trusted by the American people. The American middle class is a large and enormously talented and inventive group of problem solvers who can perform the job of governing well within the American constitutional framework and is closely in touch with the American people in general.

The core principles of this Middle Class party should be as follows:

A solid first step in fixing our economic and political woes is to disqualify any person worth more than three million dollars, regardless of political party or affiliation, from holding political office, occupying a civil service position or holding a judgeship. Reason: The rich are too corrupted by greed to be of any benefit to the community generally or be trusted by the American people. Putting the rich in government or the judiciary is equal to turning over the reins of power to a bunch of felons.

All lobbyists need to be removed from Washington and all government circles, so rational decisions replace greed as the motive force for change.

Strict terms limits must be placed on all politicians so that there is a continuous flow of fresh ideas in all policy making arenas instead of old, stale and corrupted views of the way things were.

Private financing of elections must be ended to permit the best candidates to compete for public office without ties to organizations who could care less about the public well-being when it conflicts with their profits.

The means are apparent. We need to defeat politicians who disagree with these principles (and who are in the pockets of the super-rich) and only elect politicians who agree to enact this vision at the earliest conceivable moment. The tenets of this position are straightforward and understandable and may constitute a guide for the American middle class without being co-opted by agents of the wealthy, who would corrupt this platform for the benefit of their masters.

Historically and presently, it is neither healthy nor desirable for the rich to make policy decisions affecting the public. Individuals must choose between a life of narcissism in pursuit of personal wealth and fortune or love of the community and humanity. The two have never been compatible.

Nothing in this approach prohibits lovers of money from pursuing personal wealth or affects the existence of business, markets or rich people. However, they obviously need regulation of their greed to prevent excesses harmful to the community generally. And, above all, it takes them out of the political and policy making areas of government, which is where they cause the greatest harm.

The rich did not make America great. The American people, striving for freedom from oppression and the accidental abundance of untapped natural resources, made America strong. The credit goes to our pioneering ancestors and our industrious middle class, not fat cats on Wall Street.

GET THE RICH OUT OF GOVERNMENT AND THE JUDICIARY
