Details emerge on Rep. McKeon's Countrywide loan

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Documents detail the terms of a discounted mortgage loan received by U.S. Rep. Howard McKeon from the now-defunct Countrywide Financial Corp. under a VIP program, according to a published report.

McKeon received a $315,000 mortgage refinance in 1998 as his family-owned business, Howard & Phil's Western Wear, was going through a Chapter 11 bankruptcy, the Los Angeles Times said Sunday (http://lat.ms/xzqdTd ).

The newspaper cites financial disclosures and bankruptcy filings that show the Southern California Republican saw his income plummet in the years before refinancing his Stevenson Ranch home. In spite of his limited cash flow, McKeon received a favorable rate and wasn't required to produce documentation proving he could repay the mortgage.

The terms were ordered by Countrywide chief executive Angelo Mozilo, according to documents subpoenaed for a House inquiry.

House investigators are trying to determine whether McKeon and three other congressmen, including fellow California Republican Elton Gallegly, broke rules against gifts when they received loans as part of a VIP program where some of the favored customers were known as "Friends of Angelo." The House ethics panel will also investigate whether they performed any favorable actions for the lender.

The other two congressmen are Rep. Pete Sessions, R-Texas, and Rep. Edolphus Towns, D-N.Y. None of the lawmakers has been accused by the ethics panel of any wrongdoing, and may never be if they convince investigators they had no knowledge of the discounts. Preferential terms are not illegal but can be looked upon as a gift and must be declared in financial statements.

The Times said one email written by a Countrywide staffer included this instruction on McKeon's loan: "Per Angelo — take off 1 point, no garbage fees, approve the loan and make it a no doc." Another notation recorded by a Countrywide employee said McKeon seemed "edgy" and "wants to close ASAP," according to documents.

McKeon's office said McKeon had never met or spoken to Mozilo and was "shocked and angry to hear this, as he had no knowledge of the Friends of Angelo designation." In an interview with the Times last month, McKeon said he had paid the "garbage fees" and did not get a point off on the loan.

"In other words, I didn't get a deal," he said.

Some mortgage experts who reviewed loan documents provided to the Times by McKeon's office disputed that. None of the reviewers were told who the borrower was.

Countrywide was the nation's largest mortgage company and played a major role in the U.S. financial crisis by issuing subprime loans.

Mozilo in 2010 agreed to more than $67 million in penalties in a settlement with the Securities and Exchange Commission.

I can't help but think. That this is what happens when career politicans have the helm. Maybe Rick Perry is right. Congress meets once a year at half pay. The rest of the time. These little Pis- Ant lawyers are in their communities finding out what the real problems are.

yeah and rick perry isn't right much at all but term limits time limits as long as the pay matches the time im all for it, but if they do this like they would nah no go throw all them criminal bums outin politics over 4 yrs.

Mozilo's fine sounds like a lot, but was a small fraction of what he made at countrywide.
Crime paid very well for him.

The fine is for civil damages or should be. You dont fine for bribing a US Senator or House member You go away for a long time. Ren=member Jack Abamoff and he was jsut a lobbyist.

"Preferential terms are not illegal" for Congess. Says it all. Those that pass laws should not be exempt from those laws.

another example of how washington works. This is but a bit of dust in the big picture of how they work there. Throw out all of them from office and rewrite the rules so this sht doesn't happen again. We need honest folks who actually want to work for the country, not themselves. A one time term of 8 years and no further time at the government trough should help.

this just shows you cannot expect the ones you elect to office to be on the up and up.
They ALL need to be lined up and made to account for thier actions.

Nobody gives away several hundred thousand dollars without expecting something in return.
So,,, what did they give to get this Special deal?
So now our elected officials who have been caught will claim Stupidity? "I did not know I was getting Special treatment" Do you believe them? They should be FIRED and receive no government benefits, including retirement and medical.
That's what would happen to any non elected government employee who received several hundred thousand dollars in benefits.
      • Lloyd 3 mths ago
I frimly believe stupidity is a strong defense for any of our elected officials except where personal gain is involved!

hey folks are we not yet tired of the special treatment given to those in power? is it not time to change things? i say let's vote every #$%$ politician that has been in office longer than 2 terms out!! and keep doing it! let the good ones serve 2 terms, which offhand i cannot name a good one. it's time for careers in politics and all that goes with it to end. we can end it!! do away with lobbyists. we can do that too! please let's quit fighting over which party is doing what! neither party is doing anything but screwing the average citizen in this country. let's change it!!!!

Imagine if 'our' government were to loan money to our own people for the 0.25 % rate that 'our' government loans only to Banks that grudgingly loan it to us at 6.00 % rates. We would all be able to pay off our loans quickly. But that would be socialism, and we all know that capitalism is better for us.
