“Enough is enough”: Obama speaks on Planned Parenthood shooting

President Barack Obama says the Planned Parenthood shootings show the urgent need “to do something about the easy accessibility of weapons on war” for “people who have no business wielding them." Three people including a police officer were killed when a gunman opened fire at a family planning centre in Colorado Springs on Friday. Nine others were injured during the stand-off at the Planned Parenthood clinic, which lasted five hours before the suspect surrendered. They were taken to two hospitals and were said to be in a good condition. The gunman, named at Robert Lewis Dear, 59, was arrested but the motive for the attack remained unclear, although the centre was rocked earlier this year by claims it sold aborted foetal tissue for profit.

More Americans and their families had fear forced upon them…We can’t let it become normal.

The stand-off began shortly before midday on Friday and ended when the suspect gave himself up. Colorado Springs police spokeswoman Catherine Buckley said the gunman took bags into the building, which was being searched amid fears they contained explosives. She said he was armed with a "long weapon” with a shoulder stock such as a rifle and some witnesses reported hearing automatic fire. The dead officer was named as Garrett Swasey, 44. He was from the University of Colorado, about 10 minutes away from the clinic and had responded to a call to help city officers.
