    'Devil Inside' takes off with $33.7M weekend

    LOS ANGELES (AP) — The exorcism fright film "The Devil Inside" beat industry expectations by a longshot with a $33.7 million debut, more than twice the amount the most optimistic forecasts predicted it would take in.

    The top 20 movies at U.S. and Canadian theaters Friday through Sunday, followed by distribution studio, gross, number of theater locations, average receipts per location, total gross and number of weeks in release, as compiled Monday by Hollywood.com are:

    1. "The Devil Inside," Paramount Insurge, $33,732,515, 2,285 locations, $14,763 average, $33,732,515, one week.

    2. "Mission: Impossible — Ghost Protocol," Paramount, $19,868,059, 3,555 locations, $5,589 average, $169,568,971, four weeks.

    3. "Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows," Warner Bros., $13,689,321, 3,603 locations, $3,799 average, $157,049,382, four weeks.

    4. "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo," Sony, $11,364,714, 2,914 locations, $3,900 average, $76,900,628, three weeks.

      No one waste your time and money going to see this movie. It's probably one of the worst movies I have ever seen. The previews led it up to be so much more than it was, which is one of the reasons why it made so much money. Also, people my age (teenagers) like to go see a movie even if others say it's bad, just to see if it really is that bad of a movie. It's quite ridiculous that it made so much money though..

        They thought they would be viewing a decent movie.
        I sat through 'Pulp Fiction' because I thought it would have some redeeming social value, but it never did. We went to see it because we thought some movie critics couldn't be wrong when they said the actors gave award-winning performances.

      Walked out of this horribly filmed movie within the first 20 minutes. Ended up watching Sherlock Holmes ( a much better choice, btw). I will never again watch another religious "scary" documentary. The story line was very slow. I think I aged a week trying to get through the first 20 minutes.

      The only reason it had a big opening was because they didn't advertise much; kept it relatively "unknown" and opened on a weekend with few if any) other horror flicks - so people showing up at the theater and finding other films sold-out, or those looking to go to the theaters spontaneously, with no plans what to see, simply thought "that sounds cool" and saw this piece of crap. This movie will die a cold death next week; not even the Devil can save it.

      This movie managed to suck $33.7 million from unwary visitors to theaters based mostly on the frequently aired brief tv advertisements for it. Those paying customers might have been more entertained by renting and watch the "Exorcist" or "Omen" movies at home.
