Disabled ski champ Jill Kinmont Boothe dies at 75

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Jill Kinmont Boothe, the skiing champion who became a painter and a teacher after she was paralyzed during a race and was the subject of a book and two Hollywood films, has died. She was 75.

Kinmont Boothe died Thursday at a hospital in Carson City, Nevada, Ruth Rhines of the local coroner's office told the Los Angeles Times.

At age 18, the Los Angeles native was the national women's slalom champion and on the cover of Sports Illustrated. She was trying to make the U.S. Olympic team in 1955 when she crashed and broke her neck. She was paralyzed below her shoulders and would spend the rest of her life in a wheelchair.

"At the time that she had her accident, she was probably the premier up-and-comer women's U.S. skier," Alan Engen, a former U.S. ski competitor and ski historian, told the Times.

The crash before several thousand spectators was reported around the U.S. When she returned to Southern California on a stretcher after two months in a Salt Lake City hospital, crowds of reporters and cameramen greeted her at the train station.

Her skiing career over, she learned to write, type and paint using her neck and shoulder muscles with the aid of a hand brace.

After graduating from UCLA with a degree in German and English, she applied to the university's school of education and was rejected because of her disability, she later said. Determined to further her education, she moved north with her parents, earned a teaching certificate at the University of Washington and taught remedial reading off and on for the rest of her life.

"To get mad, to scream and holler, to tell the world — that doesn't get you anywhere," she told the Times in 1968, when the newspaper named her a Woman of the Year. "You sort of look for what's good that's left, I guess."

In the 1970s, Kinmont Boothe and her mother moved to Bishop, the California mountain town where she spent her early years and learned to love skiing. It's where she met her future husband, John Boothe.

"I think the thing that impressed me most the first time I met her was that after a few minutes you forgot all about her being in a wheelchair," Boothe told the Times last year. "She obviously isn't preoccupied by it and pretty soon you're not either."

In Bishop, Kinmont Boothe was an avid painter and continued to teach. A school in town is named after her.

Her life was the subject of a 1966 book, "A Long Way Up: The Story of Jill Kinmont," by E.G. Valens, and two films, "The Other Side of the Mountain" in 1975 and a 1978 sequel.

She is survived by her husband.

Unbelievable contrast in the death reports of a woman who took the worst and produced a life of value, beauty and benefit for others and another who took the best of talent and luck but threw it away on dope and self indulgence. Guess which one gets the massive coverage.

One final act of love. I searched The Huntsville Times and perhaps I overlooked but I tried three time but found no mention of her passing. Certainly it is tragic when two celeberties die on the same day. I choose not to take away from Whitney Houston's musical contributions but Jill is being largely ignored in many of todays newspapers. Send a brief loving letter about Jill Kinmont Boothe to your local papers. Mention her contribution to all our lives because she chose to go forward and not scream I can't realize my dreams and in particular speak no ill of Whitney Houston as she brought a lot of light in music when she was young. Pray for both. One did fly above her problems and in that give us inspiration and and just a great feeling. She was an educator and her husband at least in the early days was a truck driver. In so many ways she belongs to the people. Someday after I wing away I hope to encounter her. For the moment long may ski.

RIP Jill, I remember the movie when I was a young kid and was inspired by her courage and spirit. I am amazed to hear of her rich life and that she survived to such a grand age.

I loved the movie "The Other Side of the Mountain". And had followed her story after that. She was a strong and brave woman who would not take no for an answer about being a teacher. Rest in peach Jill.

I shouldn't laugh because I know you were being sincere, but you said 'Rest in peach.' I did chuckle a little bit.

RIP Jill, you were a true inspiration to both skiers, and human perseverance! You were the prime example of: It matters not what cards you are dealt; rather it's how you play the cards you are dealt. My prayers go to her surviving husband.

I remember reading the book and seeing both films. She was a brave lady to the end and never felt like the world owed her a living. I didn't realize she was that old. It is rare for a quadraplegic person to live so long, but she was a rare person, full of joy and hope. I have thought of her often, wondering how she was doing. The road is over for her personally, but her inspiration should go on forever.

An inspirational woman and story. I would love to have seen this story titled " Ski champ and teacher Jill Kinmont Boothe dies at age 75" because her "disability" did not define her.

If they had not labeled the story "disabled" I would have never clicked it. I remember seeing the movie and I clicked this to see if that was the same person cause her name had slipped my mind.

would of been nice to have a picture, I mean if it was newsworthy. She was a very strong woman who overcame a lot and still made a life for herself. R.I.P. Jill

I read her biography when I was a teenager, in the 80's. I fell in love with her spirit and carried it with me when I had to have a double organ transplant. Thoughts are with her!

I'm from Bishop, Calif. and she was a shining example to everyone. She was truly a story of life's success. She will be missed greatly. God Bless Jill and her family.

I was very impressed with her story when the movie first came out. I did not know about the second movie until I saw it on TV recently. I looked her up on internet and saw where she now was. Twelve years ago I got severe neck injuries from an accident. Though not fully paralized like she almost was, I had an attitude like her and probably was "leftover" from the movie. I have made it so far and thanks to her I had the inspiration!

i have cerebral palsy.........jill was one of many disabled people who gave me the determination to meet my own goals in life.....i wish able bodied people would look past the handicap they may see.......and actually look at the person beneath it......whether the handicapped person be a jill k. or your everyday person you don't look at...or you turn your kid's eyes away from...or the store clerks who don't talk to the disabled.......if they are with an able bodied friend.........you might like us.......rip jill.........and to the sub human who wrote he never heard of her......YOU ARE THE TYPE OF PERSON WHO CAN MAKE OR BREAK the disabled person.....most of the time the disabled rise higher to squash bug slime like you......you know you could have a stroke today or anything could happen to put you in the same boat.......HERMAN is the BUG SLIME sub human who wrote that awful post......

I was16 when I first saw The Other Side Of The Mountain and her story moved me to tears. I watched and rewatched that movie at Cielo Vista Mall, and looked up all of her magazine articles. Her perseverence and hope inspired me as a child, and continue in my life, today. My most sincere condolences to her husband, John. Your love set a standard for me.

I'd rather see a few pix of Jill at the top of this article, not Whitney. No diss on Whitney.

I remember reading the books and watching the films in my youth. Many wheelchair bound individuals do not live a normal life expectancy often due to chronic kidney infections of which they may be unaware. I am very happy that this brave lady, defied all the odds and not only lived a long life, but a full one as well. My condolences to her husband.
