NEW YORK (AP) — Disney-ABC Television has extended its licensing deal with video-streaming service Netflix Inc. and struck a new one with Amazon.com.
Episodes from the new seasons of current Disney-ABC Series will be available on Netflix 30 days after they air. The deal includes prior season episodes of ABC Series "Grey's Anatomy," ''Desperate Housewives" and "Private Practice," among other TV shows from ABC, ABC Family and the Disney Channel.
The extension is welcome news for Netflix, which has seen its stock price tumble after several business miscalculations. It raised prices in July and introduced and then scrapped a plan to separate its DVD-by-mail and streaming services. Last week the company said about 800,000 subscribers have left the company since June.
Separately, Amazon.com said it reached a new licensing agreement with Disney-ABC for much of the same content. Members of Amazon Prime, a loyalty program, will be able to stream prior seasons of "Grey's Anatomy," old episodes of "Lost" and other shows.
Amazon has been growing its streaming offerings in an effort to compete with Netflix and Hulu.com. In September it announced a new e-book reader, the Kindle Fire that doubles as a tablet and can stream TV shows and movies.
Amazon said it expects to have 13,000 streaming videos available for Prime subscribers by the holidays.
