‘Monsters Inc.’ writer dies of brain cancer; leaves legacy as a soft-hearted genius

Daniel Gerson, screenwriter for “Big Hero 6” and the “Monsters, Inc.” films, died on Saturday, Feb. 6, at age 49 in his Los Angeles home after battling brain cancer. His family announced the news in a New York Times obituary. Services will be held in Los Angeles. Gerson “expressed a unique zest for life, its big and little moments, and brought that spirit to all of his loved ones,” according to the Times.

He was great. Re-watching his movies with my son has made me appreciate his genius all over again. RIP Daniel Gerson

Gerson was a frequent contributor for Pixar Animation, co-writing both 2001’s “Monsters, Inc.” and its 2013 sequel, “Monsters University." Along with Robert L. Baird and Jordan Roberts, Gerson co-wrote Disney’s Oscar-winning "Big Hero 6,” an animated superhero tale. The New York City-born Gerson got his start as a writer for the NBC comedy “Something So Right.”

[The challenge was], how do we get people to come along on this journey even though they know where we’re ending up? … If we’ve done our job, the audience will get so invested it’s still going to be somewhat of a surprise.
