COMMENTARY | Whether through a case of new power enthusiasm, denial or just plain ignorance, the new chair of the Democrat National Committee, Rep. Debbie Wasserman Shultz (D-Fla.), has found herself in a bit of a conundrum. During a breakfast meeting sponsored by the Christian Science Monitor, Wasserman Shultz lamented to reporters about the war she perceives Republicans have been waging against women since they took over the House.
"It's just so hard for me to grasp how they [Republicans] can be as anti-woman as they are," Wasserman Shultz said, according to U.S. News. Still, as even the darkest of misogyny clouds will have their silver lining, the congresswoman is convinced that "the push-back and the guttural reaction" from women against the Republicans is "not only going to restore" but help her and her minions "exceed the president's margin of victory." That Wasserman Shultz admits she must first "restore" before she can "exceed the president's margin of victory" is evidence of some level of desperation on her part and that of the DNC regarding Obama's current chances heading into this next election.
Curiously, Wasserman Shultz is most excited about the idea that voters will be reminded in the upcoming election that Obama signed women pay equity legislation, named two women to the Supreme Court and established the White House Council on Women and Girls. The outreach to women during the campaign "will be unprecedented," Wasserman Shultz said.
The saddest part is that Wasserman Shultz doesn't seem to believe that women are very smart. As long as they remind women that Obama has engaged in efforts designed to appease women's advocacy groups, the chair doesn't think that such gender-neutral worries as losing a house to foreclosure and being unable to afford a tank of gas are of any concern to a woman.
To hear Wasserman Shultz speak, one would think such things as government deficits, disturbing foreign policy maneuvers and staggering unemployment numbers are things only men would think are important matters for consideration during an election cycle. As a woman, I would like to ask Wasserman Shultz, what good is pay equity legislation for women if they can't find a job? No; what "will be unprecedented" will be watching Wasserman Shultz promoting her myopic, shallow and utterly insulting perception of her own gender.
In the meantime, the degree of irritation inspired by this brittle little stick currently residing in Debbie's Girl Power craw was revealed in her incoherent ramble regarding the "No Tax Payer Funding for Abortion Act" (H.R. 3).
During an interview with John McCormack of The Weekly Standard Thursday, she launched into a tirade about Republicans and their successful endeavor to defund the abortion mill known as Planned Parenthood. When asked if her attack on pro-life Republicans applied to pro-life Democrats as well, Wasserman Shultz said it did not because all of them voted "not to defund Planned Parenthood."
Perhaps in her role as the new DNC attack dog, Wasserman Shultz would come across as more formidable, or at least more credible, if she boned up on her facts before barking up unfamiliar trees. According to Govtrack.us, 16 Democrats voted for H.R. 3 and 10 Democrats voted to abort taxpayer funds from Planned Parenthood's big fat piggy bank.
The embarrassing Q&A between McCormack and Wasserman Shultz went as follows:
TWS: "You mentioned earlier that Republicans have an extreme social agenda. They're waging a war on women, that they're anti-woman. Would those words, fairly harsh, also apply to the 16 Democrats who voted for the No Taxpayer Funding for Abortion Act."
DWS: "Well, if you look at their record as a whole, all of them voted not to defund Title X, not to defund Planned Parenthood. So, when I make a harsh characterization of Republicans, it's in their platform, it's their third most important priority, by indication of it being H.R. 3 was ending--was getting rid of Planned Parenthood funding, redefining rape so that you could not get access to an abortion paid with federal funds unless you were forcibly raped. So statutory rape didn't count,* date rapes didn't count, for a while incest, unless you were a minor, didn't count. So if you look on balance at their entire record, their record is anti-woman. Their record is a war on women. And it's a priority for them."TWS: "But for the 16 Democrats who also voted for H.R. 3, are they also waging a war on women?"
DWS: " No, they're not, because they don't have the same record--"
TWS: "But there were eleven [correction: ten] Democrats who voted against funding for Planned Parenthood, so are those eleven Democrats anti-woman?"
DWS: "No, they're not, because if you, when I declare someone, when I make a broad statement like that, I look at the balance of somebody's--where their priorities are, the balance of their record. And so one individual isolated vote here and there does not make you anti-woman."
TWS: "So what are the broader votes that make those Democrats who voted on those same issues--on Planned Parenthood on H.R. 3--what makes them not anti-woman?"
DWS: "I don't think there are any Democrats."
TWS: "Eleven."
DWS: "Now I'd have to check. But I don't think there are any Democrats who voted yes on all of those provisions. I don't think any of them did. I whipped the vote. I'm pretty sure I'm right."
High on her new power trip as the new DNC Chair, Wasserman Shultz is just getting warmed up with her GOP war. She is also taking aim at Republicans who opposed President Obama's Automakers bailout.
"If it were up to the candidates for president on the Republican side," she scoffed, "we would be driving foreign cars. They would have let the auto industry in America go down the tubes," reports the Los Angeles Times.
But according to The Hill, Florida motor vehicle records show there is a 2010 Infiniti FX35 registered to the Wasserman Shultz residence. The Infiniti is a Japanese car whose parent company is Nissan, another Japanese company. Since the license plate includes her initials, we'll just go out on a limb and say it belongs to her.
That Debbie Wasserman Shultz is steering the DNC is disturbing. That she is allowed to drive a car is dangerous. Clearly this woman has been longing too hard to relive her glory days as a hall monitor.
