DNC Chair Defends Obama in the Wake of Jobs Report
Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz, chairwoman of the Democratic National Committee, took on the tough job of answering for this week’s tepid jobs report on Sunday, trying to defend the Obama administration and turn attention to Mitt Romney’s finances.
“Everyone acknowledges that we have a long way to go,” she said on Fox News Sunday. “But we have made significant progress.”
The Florida Democrat pointed to President Obama’s role in the auto bailout and his calls for middle-class tax breaks and other policy prescriptions as reasons that the president deserves another term to address the country’s financial ills.
“Mitt Romney will drag us back to the policies that got us into this mess in the first place,” she said.
She went on to echo recent attacks by the Obama campaign on Romney’s personal finances. “Why does an American businessman need a Swiss bank account and secretive investments?” she said.
The Obama campaign has raised questions about Romney’s accounts in Switzerland and Bermuda, though the Romney campaign has said that the former Massachusetts governor has done nothing wrong and no substantial evidence has surfaced to the contrary.
