Doctors in Peru to remove 'parasitic twin'

LIMA, Peru (AP) — Doctors in Peru have found a "parasitic twin" in the stomach of a 3-year-old boy, and plan to surgically remove the tissue Monday.

Dr. Carlos Astocondor of the medical team at Las Mercedes Hospital in the northern port of Chiclayo says the condition occurs in about one of every 500,000 live births.

He says the partially formed fetus weighs a pound and a half (700 grams) and is nine inches (25 centimeters) long.

Astocondor says the brain, heart, lungs and intestines never developed after the fetus was absorbed by the other fetus inside the mother's womb. He says it has some hair on the cranium, eyes and some bones.

As the article indicates, this is far more common than most would guess. There are probably around 700 cases right now in the USA alone. It is possible to live a normal life span with such an embedded twin and never even know about it. Some years ago a woman with unexplained pain in one foot had an X-ray that showed "foreign" matter. Surgery resulted in the removal of a small tissue mass with hair and... wait for it... partially developed teeth, which were the cause of the cutting pains.

I saw a show where they were going to take a woman's child away from her because her dna was not the same as her child. Only to find out her body was created from two fetus.

I am sure the boy does not come from an economically stable family, and is very lucky to have this operation done. To think if this child grew to adulthood with this parastic twin in him! I feel that would be much more worse, Thank God it was discovered this early in life.

I presume the "parasitic twin" is in the child's abdomen, rather than in the boy's "stomach".

I hope the little boy survives. Also this "absorption" process is the stuff of nightmares and hollywood...or perhaps I have watched too many scary movies.

A somewhat disturbing yet fascinating glimpse of physical development in humans, and yet somehow commenters still reach so far to turn the subject into irritating and boring politics.

the fetus was not aborted, it was absorbed by the boys stomach, it had no working organs or heart beat

I'm not a liberal and do not believe in abortion, but even I can see that the growing child is a person and that not all living, growing human tissue is a viable person in or out of the womb. It's a case of a baby not developing properly and typically the undeveloped, abnormal fetus would have been reabsorbed in the uterus before many moms even knew they're pregnant, but in this case the cells didn't separate properly leaving the fetus inside of a healthy fetus. Allowing the parasitic twin to remain inside the child would be dangerous as it is growing like a tumor. Removing it seems the only right thing to do.
