Doha to Bid for 2020 Olympics

Doha to Bid for 2020 Olympics

Doha, Qatar will be allowed to bid for the 2020 Summer Olympics with special permission to hold the games between September 20 and October 20, the BBC reports, so athletes won't have to compete in temperatures over 100 degrees. Holding the games later will allow athletes to avoid peak summer heat in the Middle Eastern country. Doha, which wanted the 2016 Games but didn't make the short list, will be up against Rome, Madrid, Tokyo, and Istanbul. The games have never been held in the Middle East.

Qatar won the right to host the 2022 World Cup, and will build air-conditioned stadiums to deal with the heat during the June tournament.
