Dolphins sign DT Austin

The Miami Dolphins signed defensive tackle Marvin Austin and placed defensive tackle Vaughn Martin on injured reserve, the team announced Tuesday.

The Dolphins were without defensive tackle Paul Soliai last Sunday against the Atlanta Falcons and the acquisition of Austin signals that Soliai could miss more time. Austin was one of several defensive tackles who had a tryout last week in Miami.

The 6-foot-2, 312-pound Austin spent the past two seasons with the New York Giants (2011-12), playing in eight games and logging five tackles in 2012. He suffered a torn pectoral muscle and did not play in 2011 after the Giants selected him in the second round of the draft that year.

The Giants cut Austin at the end of training camp in August. His preseason highlight was the fourth-quarter hit that injured New York Jets quarterback Mark Sanchez's shoulder.
