Dominican who alleged VP corruption held for bail
SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic (AP) — A television commentator in the Dominican Republic accused of falsifying documents to portray the vice president as corrupt has been detained after refusing to post bail.
Marcos Martinez is facing trial for falsifying documents that showed that Vice President Margarita Cedeno had $73 million in an undisclosed bank account in Denmark. He faces up to five years in prison.
A judge ordered him to pay bail of nearly $20,000 on Tuesday. Martinez was temporarily detained by prosecutors in Santiago after initially refusing to pay, telling reporters he's a political prisoner.
Martinez made the allegations in February 2012 when Cedeno was running for vice president. She is the wife of former President Leonel Fernandez and said on Twitter that she looks forward to a trial to clear her reputation.
