Donor slips $1,600 gold coin in Wis. red kettle

GREEN BAY, Wis. (AP) — A Salvation Army branch in Wisconsin may not have received frankincense or myrrh, but its bell ringers found a gift of gold.

The Green Bay Press-Gazette reports (http://gbpg.net/tlQjO4 ) that an anonymous donor dropped a gold coin in a red kettle this week. The one-ounce American Eagle coin is worth $1,600.

Capt. Ken Shiels of The Salvation Army of Brown County said he had to check it over at first to know it was real. He says it was a thrill to find out it was, and even more so to discover how much it's worth.

He says he'd like to think the gift reflects the donor's confidence in the work the Salvation Army does. The organization is about two-thirds of the way to its winter fundraising goal of $1.15 million.

It's inspiring to see people who have the means, making donations to the poor. But we never hear much about the poorer folks who give all they have to help others. It is so admirable to see a person give what they have when they have needs of their own. It is a selfless, natural love that tickles my heart.

I don't know about you, but we hear stories about people of modest means giving to others, especially folks who at one time needed help themselves and although not wealthy by any means, feel the need to pay it forward. We hear about, and see pictures of people volunteering at the Free Store/FoodBank who have had to rely on this agency in the past to feed their families. Maybe they don't publicize it in Knoxville, which is a shame.

Do as you will but to give to an organization that has huge overhead is not good ,find someone that needs help I'm sure you have seen many and give to them instead, directly.

This type of kidness goes on mainly on people that have good hearts, and they do not get recognized because they're doing it 365 days of the year. The giver gives from the heart, and receiver, receives to sherish it with his heart. It's not the value that's important, but the though of doing good is what matters. Whether you're rich or poor, you're rich in God's eye when you give from your heart. God bless you, and Merry Christmas to you and your family.

Am I the only cynical one that thinks that this could have been an accident? Don't get me wrong...I love a wonderful, happy story like this, and we could definitely use many more like them. In this economy however, it makes me wonder if it was intentional.

I worked for a retail store as a manager in south burlington vt for 5 years. For 4 of those years we collected for St Jude Childrens Research Hospital. Making a donation in many of the stores is a great way to donate as 100% collected at our location went to the hospital, you also would get a reciept for use with your tax deduction. No name or information was needed, just the donation. So many great people donated when asked. Our little store in Vermont was the top fundraising store in a company with 500 stores. Its truely amazing how generous people are when given the chance (and a little push in the right direction : )....... Theres no better feeling than to give. WAY better than receiving I think. Thanks all, and MERRY CHRISTMAS!!!!

is it just me or is this on the news every year? I swear there is some rich coin collector guy with a stash of these coins and waits for the bell ringers every year just to get a chuckle when he sees it on the news.

Yeah, the Salvation Army does a lot of good work, but why is it when po folks like me go to the Salvation Army Thrift store and they want $200 for a refrigerator that someone gave them, or $100 for some ole couch that someone probably died on...
