Doubt that Bachmann Truly Believes Joke About Hurricane Irene?

This story comes from the Yahoo! Contributor Network, where individuals publish their unique perspectives on some of the world’s most popular websites.

As she falls in the national polls, presidential candidate Michele Bachmann still has a knack for making headlines. But instead of her usual history-related gaffe, Bachmann made a joke about the one-two punch of natural disasters (a 5.8 magnitude earthquake and Hurricane Irene) that were visited upon the East Coast this past week. And though a Bachmann spokesperson quickly issued a statement to Talking Points Memo that insisted the Minnesota congresswoman was joking, it is not unheard of for jokes to be used for serious observations and commentary (ask Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert). And given some of Bachmann's comments in the past, her joke was serious.

    Seriously.

Bachmann, who is a government-killing defunding fiscal conservative, has made no effort to hide that she wants to limit, restrict or dismantle major portions of the federal government. According to the St. Petersburg Times, while speaking before an audience in Sarasota, Fla., on Sunday, she seemed to imply that God had something to say about the matter as well.

"I don't know how much God has to do to get the attention of the politicians," she told the crowd. "We've had an earthquake; we've had a hurricane. He said, 'Are you going to start listening to me here?' Listen to the American people because the American people are roaring right now. They know government is on a morbid obesity diet and we've got to rein in the spending."

When there began to be blowback from her remarks -- some taking exception to Bachmann's insinuation that God chooses sides in political battles -- the GOP presidential contender's camp issued a statement that she had been joking.

But all joking aside, Bachmann has shown time and again that she believes that God is on her side, encouraging her politically. By extension, if that were to be so, then her political positions -- and those who are in agreement with her -- must be divinely supported as well.

She told a congregation of churchgoers in 2006 that God wanted her to go to law school. Then she was divinely inspired to enter politics and to run for Congress. In June, she told the Iowa Press that she had answered a "calling" to run for president.

"Well, every decision that I make I pray about as does my husband and I can tell you, yes, I've had that calling and that tugging on my heart that this is the right thing to do."

She said in an interview with World Net Daily in 2009 that she would not do anything, including running for president, without the approval of God.

So was Bachmann's reference to God only a joke? Partially, but only insofar as the phrasing is concerned. It was also a serious comment on what she believes about the political situation in Washington and what God wants. It was a serious statement made in a joking matter.

Make no joke about it -- the Congresswoman was serious.

I think she's about knocked herself out of this race. If this calibre of candidate is all we can muster, then I agree with the revolutionists. Time for an end to politics and a return to the values of the Founders.

It is unlikely that Bachmann was joking about God and his relationship to terrestrial tragedies. She is an evangelical Christian, and almost all evangelical Christians believe that God is an interventionist God who interacts moment-by-moment with individuals and nations, including using tragic events as punishment or to get people's attention. Also, she surely knows that using God's name in a casual way is a violation of the commandment, “You shall not take the name of the Lord in vain.” This commandment would include the meaning that you shall not associate God's name with something that he has nothing to do with.
Having said that, Bachmann need not apologize for her comment or say that she was joking. There are millions of people who believe exactly as she does, and no one should have to apologize for their religious faith. Voters can decide whether Bachmann's religious faith has any bearing on their vote. It was well known that George Bush II read the Bible every day and tried to inculcate divine wisdom into his decisions, and he was elected to the presidency twice.
I am not a Republican, so I personally disagree with most of Bachmann’s positions, but I don’t think she should shy away from expressing her beliefs. Indeed, voters need to know who she really is.

Anyone with half a brain can tell that her comment was just a tongue-in-cheek jab at the current administration. This is just making a mountain out of molehill as usual for the media. It doesn't take much for a conservative to be able to tweak the media and bend them all out of shape. Obama's said some things that were pretty awful, but they've gone virtually unnoticed by the media. Gee, I wonder why....???

I am not so sure. I don't think all the people in her audience were laughing at her joke. Watch the video again, there are a few that still have stern looks. The media only showed the video, they didn't bend it out of shape. Obama had some gaffs in his campaign and they did go noticed. The thing with Bachman is she has one idea on her plate, and her idea would bring down this country so hard and fast most people wouldn't see it until after it happened. She is not listening to people who know what should be done. She wants to bulldoze her way through, and that is not going to work.

it shows an extreme lack of judgement to joke about the pain and sorrow so many people are going through. If it was a joke it was in poor taste and she should be ashamed

Make up your minds, teabaggers. Is she joking about god, or joking about people losing their homes and lives?
    • Observer  •  8 mths ago
Joking?? I have friends who have lost their homes and she is joking about this? She is a sick, selfish ignorant #$%$

Is Michelle Bachmann related to the nut jobs from the Westboro Baptist Church?

Thank you, Saul! Not that the Republithug teatards here will believe you, but then they take Bachmann seriously too.

The biggest lie: that we need god for morality. More hate and immorality have been done in the name of religion (including secular religions of the state). I watch simple shows with my son on Nick Jr and, without bringing a deity into the mix, they show kids what's right and wrong by pointing out how wrong acts hurt others -- instead of presenting it as a self-centered, selfish 'whats in it for me' idea that links right actions with getting a reward and avoiding punishment from some deity.

Does she think is't a joke? I don't know. Does Obama think there's 57 states in the US?
    • Whatever  •  8 mths ago
Here's some news for those who think we need god for morality: that's self-serving and ego-based where you do good only to get a reward and/or avoid punishment. I watch simple programs with my young son on Nick Jr and they emphasize doing good and not hurting others by bringing to the child's mind the realization of the suffering it causes. No deity, no bargaining, no doing good to get something...

Hint: the SANE people see Palin, Bachmann, and Perry for what they are; these sane people include conservatives, dems, libs, independents, republicans. We may disagree on people like Bush, Obama, Romney, and Clinton but we can all agree on crazy whackos like Palin, Bachmann, and Perry.

Someone asked about her policies. Ok: 1) Add pre-born as persons under 14th amendment; ban abortion; 2) Constitutional amendment banning gay marriage; 3) 'There aren't enough rich people' - voted against shareholders decide on CEO pay; 4) Voted against enforcing anti-gay hate crimes; 4) Against anti-bullying law that it would potentially violate free speech; 5) Voted against EPA regulating greenhouse gas; 5) States that our pre-obama care was best in world (fact: it was 49th); against health care for all; 6) Iowa speech - re-wrote history & minimized slavery; 7) Get rid of social security; 8) Voted against laws that allow job discrimination based on orientation; 9) Suggested that there was some cosmic link between democrats and the outbreak of swine flu (!) ....
    • Shadow  •  9 mths ago
Anybody want to say anything about her stated policies and their effects, or are you going to continue to call her names? Can anybody explain what they like or don't like about her policies? This kinda reminds me of when the Barack Obama supporter was famously asked what of Obama's policies they support. (Just stood there on camera stunned that one should actually think about who they vote for.)

She is a whack job. And to the people that agree with her, come out of the cave. Quit dancing around the fire and praying to the invisible man. You would think that we would have come farther than this.
      • Shadow 9 mths ago
Yes, I wish we had come farther than this--focusing solely on personal attributes of people because we're too illiterate to talk about public policy.

What is most disgusting about what she said is that she thinks that a hurricane that killed more than 40 people is a joke!!!

WE need God And the Ten Commandments, without them people would not be held accountable for all the bad things (and good things they do). Nonbelievers show no remorse at all over evil deeds the do. First no God and then not obeying laws, this world is on a steady decline because most people dont have morals anymore.

really, would take me about an hour's research to compile a list of believers who did horrific things, starting with Adolf Hitler
      • Susan 8 mths ago
I believe in God. I believe in living my life with the ten commandments as a guide. I would like to see prayer return to the schools. I would not like to see Michelle Bachman, or any similar candidate become president.

So the Christian God killed 40 plus people to prove he's a Tea Partier? That's Terrorism isn't it?
      • Shadow 9 mths ago
Obama killed hundreds of thousands of innocent people in two countries for daring to defy U.S. oil interests. That's your god, isn't it?
