Dr. Oz's health effort nets 1 million participants

NEW YORK (AP) — Television already has "The Biggest Loser." Dr. Mehmet Oz is looking for the biggest number of losers.

"The Dr. Oz Show" said Monday that it had netted its 1 millionth participant in its "transformation nation" health effort, and the number is climbing. One of those people will win a $1 million prize in May.

Since September, Oz has urged viewers to participate in his health challenge, done together with Weight Watchers. The number of registrants has increased steadily to a point that Oz said he'd never imagined the program would reach.

"It is one of the most rewarding experiences of my life," Oz said.

Oz's program has seven steps, starting with the simplest: Tell a friend to get some moral support. Participants are asked to register with Weight Watchers and go to a center to have their body mass index calculated. Other steps include connecting with a doctor, learning your family's health history, getting more sleep, managing stress better and starting new fitness habits.

A sample of 96,000 registrants who had weighed in at Weight Watchers determined they had collectively lost 672,000 pounds, or an average of 7 pounds per person, the show said.

The show will select 10 finalists that it believes best embody the effort — not necessarily those who lose the most weight — and viewers will choose a favorite this spring for the $1 million prize. People need to register by Feb. 26 to be eligible.

Participants are sent weekly email reminders by the show of things they need to do to reach their goals, tailored to their individual circumstances.

"Fundamentally, it's about making it easier to do the right thing," Oz said.

Oz also said he hoped the project would be a model for using TV to accomplish worthwhile goals.

WOW every day I read remarks in Yahoo and every day I am amazed at how cruel people can be and now I fully understand how easy it is for cowards to bully others if they don't have to look that person in the eyes and say the things that are said. People wish people they don't even know to die?? What? Why would anyone say that? I am going to assume this is this latest generation that thinks of no one but themselves, doesn't care how stupid they sound and overall do not care. How sad!

Weight Watchers: full of GMO's, unhealthy fats, synthetic sweeteners, pesticides, antibiotics, dyes, and preservatives. Too bad Dr Oz doesn't know his stuff.

He knows. He's paid to look the other way from The Coporate Food Industry that endorses and places promotional spots throughout his show, or lack thereof.

And to think he was ranting about the problems with Apple Juice and now he actually promotes a company that has worse things in the foods than was in the Apple Juice.

What are you talking about? With WW you eat your own food they just give you a plan to keep up with healthy choices. I have been a life time member for years!

People don't register with WW. They go to WW to get their official beginning and ending weigh in but they do not have to join WW to participate in the Dr. Oz program
      • Rebecca 3 mths ago
You are right. I work with WW and all we do is fill out a form and hand it back to them.

"Participants are asked to register with Weight Watchers..." People should be able to lose weight without registering at an expensive program like Weight Watchers, but who would put up the million dollars to fund this "transformation"?
      • Denise 3 mths ago
Not just that... Weight Watchers = starving yourself. 1200 calories at most for a great deal of participants. Here's something some of you may not know: 1200 calories is the same amount of calories your body uses JUST TO FUNCTION. This includes digestion, heart pumping, etc. That amount and fewer will exhaust any effort of weight loss. I can't believe he's promoting this.

They also don't promote a whole lot of exercise. Granted, 80% of weight loss, or I should say, your daily regiment, is diet (or diet changes), 20% is exercise, but once you're past that, it's all about being active for the sake of the body alone. You still have to focus on the 80% on FUELING the body, not keeping it fat and happy.

Side note... what's with Jillian on Doctors??? Can't stand her.

"The number of registrants has increased steadily to a point that Oz said he'd never imagined the program would reach."

When you have millions of idle people watching you at home and you dangle a million dollars worth of bait, what do you expect? This is entirely predictable.

I was thinking of what a selfless guy Dr. Oz is until I read that he wants people to register with Weight Watchers. There's always a business angle.

As a fitness professional, I thought this was great, UNTIL I read further. This is my first post ever. Well, with the million dollar PRIZE attached and the WW promotion I found this disappointing. Fitness, especially weight loss, generated by this kind of "prize" at the end does NOT work long term.

I work for WW and we do not sign them up. We just fill out a form and give it back to them to go to his website to sign up. He just needed some way to weigh all these people accurately. Yeah, WW has gotten a few people but not that many from his Transformation Nation. More people have signed up because of all the advertizing we have done and WW does work.

Yahoo should require mean people to leave their name.

"Dr. Oz's health effort nets 1 million participants." More like:
"Dr. Oz's health effort nets 1 million consumerist dupes." He's not about getting you healthy. It's about making harpO fatter and richer.

Here's a free tip: GO SEE YOUR OWN DOCTOR. He's just as smart as Oz and has YOUR specific interests in mind.

Oz is the biggest snake oil salesman of modern times. EVERY day, it's "amazing discovery", "For the first time"....etc. Scare tactics and the audience is enthralled by this charlatan. You got a problem? SEE YOUR DOCTOR!
    • DENISED  •  Germantown, Maryland  •  3 mths ago
Tell me why a "real" doctor is so egar to put you on Meds and they seldom suggest trying vitamins. I cured my hayfever by just taking 3,000mgs of vitamin C each day - look it up. Better then the $1 pill crap. I am on the PGX he suggested for my blood sugar and it dropped 50 pts! I don't even watch him, I just happened to walk in the room and the channel was on. It is a free world and we do not have to watch him.

I really miss Dr. Oz! Working too much-I didn't know about the challenge-I believe I'll accept that challenge-it's about time. He's a great guy with a passion for helping others-absolutely an outstanding role model with a zest for life that is contagious. He makes you want to be a better you. Keep up the good work Doc!!
