DreamWorks Animation 3Q up on 'Madagascar 3'

LOS ANGELES (AP) — DreamWorks Animation SKG Inc. said Thursday that its third-quarter net income grew 24 percent thanks to the box office success of "Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted."

Net income in the three months to Sept. 30 grew to $24.4 million, or 29 cents per share, from $19.7 million, or 23 cents per share, a year ago.

Revenue grew 16 percent to $186.3 million.

Analysts were looking for 11 cents per share on revenue of $138.1 million, according to FactSet.

"Madagascar 3" has made $720 million in global ticket sales so far, although that revenue is shared with distributors and theater owners. CEO Jeffrey Katzenberg said the film is the fifth highest-grossing of the year.

The company is now looking ahead to the Nov. 21 release, "Rise of the Guardians."

Shares rose 29 cents to $20.90 in after-hours trading after closing up 20 cents at $20.61 amid a broad market rally.
