OTTAWA -- In the first start of his NHL career, Frederik Andersen played with the poise and calmness of a seasoned veteran.
The 24-year-old goalie was brilliant in leading the Anaheim Ducks to a 2-1 victory over the Ottawa Senators on Friday night at Canadian Tire Centre.
Andersen stopped 26 shots in a duel with the Senators' Craig Anderson, who performed some acrobatics of his own while making 26 saves.
One of Andersen's biggest stops came against former Ducks winger Bobby Ryan with about eight minutes left in the third period. Ryan directed a shot that was headed for the bottom corner of the net before Andersen kicked out his left skate and turned it away.
The win improved Anaheim's record to 8-3-0. The Senators slipped to 4-4-2.
The Ducks would have salted the game away had they been able to take advantage of five power play opportunities in the first two periods. Instead, they had to protect a 2-1 leading going into the third.
Mika Zibanejad scored his first goal of the season in his second game since being recalled from the minors on an Ottawa power play at 9:04 of the second period. After taking a pass from Chris Phillips, Zibanejad drilled a shot from the left point that beat goalie Frederik Andersen on the stick side.
Patrick Maroon gave Anaheim a 1-0 head start at 7:35 of the first period while playing Bobby Ryan's old role as the winger on a line with Ryan Getzlaf and Corey Perry. The two veteran Ducks assisted on Maroon's second goal of the season, which was also the fourth of his 23-game NHL career.
Getzlaf bumped the lead with his fourth goal of the season, courtesy of former Norris Trophy winner Erik Karlsson, who lost the puck while stepping out from behind the Ottawa net. Getzlaf showed his appreciation with a celebratory punch at the air after swiping a shot past Anderson.
NOTES: Anaheim RW Teemu Selanne didn't get the chance to play in what was scheduled to be his final game at Canadian Tire Centre, as the Ducks stuck to their plan of not dressing the 43-year-old in the second of back-to-back games. Selanne, who is retiring at the end of the season, scored the third-ever hat trick in the home of the Senators when he netted three on March 22, 1998, in a 5-2 Anaheim win. ... Senators D Jared Cowen was playing in his 100th NHL game. Earlier in the day, he was teased by teammates for being the only player to hold out for a new contract before reaching the century mark. Cowen only missed a few days during camp while waiting for a new deal. ... Entering the night one point shy of 200 in the NHL was Ducks C Andrew Cogliano, who would have been playing for Ottawa had former Senators LW Dany Heatley not nixed a proposed trade in the summer of 2009. ... Senators D Patrick Wiercioch was a healthy scratch for the second straight game. The 23-year-old started the season on Ottawa's second blue-line pairing.
