Duggar's 20th Pregnancy: Is It Safe?

Michelle Duggar's pregnancy with her 20th child is not only jaw-dropping; it is also risky, according to experts.

Duggar, who appears with her husband Jim Bob on the reality TV show "19 Kids and Counting," had a life-threatening experience with her last baby, Josie, who had to be delivered three and a half months early, weighing only 1 lb., 6 oz, according to news reports.

"The more pregnancies one has, the greater the risk of a bad outcome that could leave the children that are already born without a mother," said Dr. Philip Darney, director of the Bixby Center for Global Reproductive Health at the University of California, San Francisco.

Worldwide, he said, as the number of births per women increase, so does the rate of maternal or neonatal death.

Duggar long ago earned a spot in the category doctors have created for women who have had many children. Women achieve what is called grand multiparity when they give birth at least five times, and, for these women, additional pregnancies bring special risks. [11 Big Fat Pregnancy Myths]

Doctors worry most that these women will hemorrhage after delivery, and doctors won't be able to get the uterus to contract to stop the bleeding, said Dr. Lois Brustman, an associate professor of clinical obstetrics and gynecology at Columbia University.

A woman's uterus, the organ within which the fetus develops, is a muscle, and each successive pregnancy stretches that muscle. As a result, after a woman has had many pregnancies, the muscle has a hard time contracting after the placenta — the organ that connects the fetus to the mother's blood supply — separates, Brustman said. This creates a risk of massive bleeding. Because the uterus has been weakened by successive pregnancies, drugs to cause this contraction are typically less successful, she said.

Scar tissue from past pregnancies within the uterus can cause problems with the placenta. This can create additional risks, including premature birth, according to Brustman.

Duggar is 45, and her age also brings increased risk of health problems during pregnancy, including hypertension, diabetes and preeclampsia, a condition unique to pregnancy that involves hypertension and protein in the urine, Brustman said. Duggar suffered from preeclampsia during her most recent pregnancy, according to news reports.

Her age also brings risk of chromosomal anomalies — a type of genetic problem — which can cause Down syndrome, miscarriages and other issues. This risk increases dramatically as a woman ages.

So is there a maximum number of pregnancies a woman's body can sustain? In her practice, Brustman has helped women deliver as many as 12 babies, but, she said, "I am not sure the uterus has a limit."

A woman can typically conceive about two months after giving birth. Regular breastfeeding can also act as a temporary form of birth control, she said.

Among Hutterites, a North American Christian religious group whose members do not practice birth control but accept modern medicine, the median number of births per woman was 13, according to Darney. Because a median represents the number in the middle of a distribution, this means that some women are having more than 13, he said.

This number demonstrates women's reproductive capacity under ideal conditions, he said. "That doesn't mean that having 13 children is the way to achieve the best possible pregnancy outcome and that it is without hazard."

I think it's time for Michelle and Jim Bob to pick it up and stop all ready. Baby 19, Josie, almost died at birth and will have medical problems for the rest of her life. That should have been a red flag for the Duggars, in their mid forties, to focus more on raising the ones they have and on being grand parents. Baby 19 has permanent medical problems, baby 20 miscarries, what's next Duggars? Also, you have to admire Jim Bob's shrewd, although hypocritical use of the t.v. media. On the one hand, the Duggars preach about the evils of television and do not allow it in their homes. On the other hand, TLC and television has granted them the fame and attention they so greatly crave. TLC and the television media, that they have so many issues with, have in fact put food on their table and helped to
put clothes on 21 backs. Duggars, look in your bible and tell me what it says the definition of a "hypocrite

If people would stop watching these crappy " reality " shows they would go away.
I have never watched the Duggars and don't plan on it.

Not true. She had 18 of those kids before the show.

I don't watch the show, but I'm grateful it's there. Without it they'd probably all be on government support. My tax dollars get wasted enough as it is.
      • Robert Gary 6 mths ago
They do not make any money on the show. The family owns a series of Real Estate companies, rental companies and a car dealership. They paid cash for their house and have no debt. Not sure why ignorant people suspect they are on public support when they are not.

Not only did her last baby have to spend MONTHS of her life in the NICU, struggling to develop enough to live without the aid of machines and medicine, but the oldest of the kids are now producing offspring of their own. So when mom introduces to her toddler grandchildren "this is your infant aunt/uncle so-in-so" .....I believe it's time to practice safe sex. there can't be ANY tread left on the tires after 20 births....

Do these folks have insurance they pay for or are they on the public dole? And how much are they paying in taxes each year? Very little with all those deductions. Once again, on the public dole. And all of these folks here defending the right of these thieves to get around the system using religion to hide behind!
      • Jessica 6 mths ago
how the hell are they thieves. and im sure you collect your tax return for children, and they have there own business as well idiots so they arent living

"this is your infant aunt/uncle so-in-so"

Funny that you mentioned this, I have a half-sister whose a year younger than my nephew. The sister's mother was a little over middle age (don't remember though) and is my father's fifth(?) kid. On the other hand, my nephew's mother (my full-blooded sister) gave birth to him at 19.

my cousin's wife is pregnant with her 11th.. but they DO rely on the government for assistance... food, house, his college (cuz he wont work , he doesnt "like" it.. he goes off hiking for days , or out on his little motorcycle while she stays at home.. they home birth, home school... obviously people who have more than 5 kids (which i think should be the most , IMO .. need a serious hobby other than screwing. my grandma had 8 kids, dont get me wrong, but that was over 17 years, not one a year!

Maybe God was telling them with Josie that they should stop having children. I don't think this will be a good out come for them. As far as affording such a big family, they make at least $50,000 per eposide. They have no money worries now. TLC paid for much of their house, and it's tax free because it is listed as a church too. Someday their children will have to actually have to earn a living and without accrediated college courses, it's going to be difficult. My motto: don't have more children than you can get through college!
      • Tammy 6 mths ago
I concur with your first comment on God telling them to stop after Josie. He allows us to make decisions and quite possibly they weren't listening. I hope she is okay. The other part about college I don't believe is correct. Having a college degree these days doesn't mean squat. If they are hard working and motivated, their father owns a business so they could be familiar with that...and employer will hire them over a degree...seen this happen on more than one occasion.
      • Angela 6 mths ago
Sure a handful of people with 25 years of expirience starting from back in the day when people didnt expect college educations as much, sometimes get lucky and make a break into a better position, I know a few people too. But TWENTY INDIVIDUALS from the SAME family, all expirienced at the SAME BUISNESS?? Be realistic about the chances of them all being able to stay competive and employed in sucessful careers that pay enough for this lifestyle, without a college degree. Education is very important, and unfortunately, contrary to your assumptions, the world is moving towards more degress and more professional training, not this 'squat' that you speak of.
      • Timber 6 mths ago
Again, your not taking into account their religious beliefs. There will not be 20 kids looking for jobs from this family. The girls are being raised to take care of home and family - not go to work. Only the boys will be searching for employment and Mr.Duggar is sure to have enough facets of business to accommodate his sons. His oldest son owns his own car dealership and is building a family of his own.

I will give them credit they do a better job than some parents do with 2 or 3 kids
      • Doris 6 mths ago
They do better than most parents, because the older kids are raising the younger ones.
      • Janice 6 mths ago
That is so true! I see a lot of judgmental comments, but if they are giving their children good homes then they will grow up to be good citizens in this country and we need more people like that, so, who cares?
      • laura 6 mths ago
It might be good to raise a least 20 people on the planet who care about and help each other. There are so many more selfish self absorbed kids who have no role in their family whatsoever. It's a positive thing to be an active part of a healthy family.

You should worry less about families where the father pays the bill, and more about the single mother crackheads that have 6 kids by 6 different men and expect taxpayers to foot the bill
      • jelise 6 mths ago
I agree about the single mothers but could he pay the bills without the tv show? I think the older children in a family this large do alot of raising the younger children and that is not quite fair.
      • Susana 6 mths ago
        Well said!!

As long as they get their "Obama Money" nobody gets hurt.
    • queen  •  6 mths ago
They do support themselves and are not on any govt assistance. Before the show they did not have near the money they have now. It was only after the show they built their house, bought the tour bus, travel, have smart phones, comps etc. They had none of that stuff before the show made them the money. (I hope the baby turns out healthy but this is just too much for any family. The older kids are raising their siblings instead of cultivating thier own goals, ideas and future. The health risk to both baby and mother is too high to continue having children, this one is coming, and I hope it goes well, but enough is enough.
    • AlissaP  •  Murfreesboro, United States  •  6 mths ago
IMO, if they wanted that many children, they should've spared her body some damage and just adopted children that already needed a home..

By now the labor procedure must be old hat...

Wife: "Honey, I'm poppin another one out. Come catch it."

Husband: "OK, let me get the net."

i wonder what will happen to the mom when she is no longer able to have children. how is she going to satisfy her desperate need for attention?
    • Dediadreamer  •  6 mths ago
I don't know whether it is safe, but the real question is, is it sane?
    • meggles  •  York, United States  •  6 mths ago
it's called birth control use it! It's crazy to have that many children, you must be a mad woman.
    • Vicki  •  Los Angeles, United States  •  6 mths ago
It is completely irresponsible to have that many children. There are thousands of children waiting to be adopted. Why don't they give a home to some of these children. Having all the children "God allows" doesn't necessarily mean giving birth to that many when there are so many children waiting for homes.

Stupid people. Just how much quality time can this couple give to each child? Think of the resources involved. To educate and feed these children. It is one way to make money off these kids. Reality TV. The reality is these people are selfish and short sighted.

Her health is at risk. Surely this couple is capable of something besides breeding. They must have some talent other than intercourse. Or not. I wonder just what the kids will say one day about living in such a zoo.
    • tashalynn29  •  6 mths ago
On one hand, at least they are not on the government sugar t!t, on the other, the obsession with babies and preganancy is disturbing. She hands off responsibility to the older kids to take care of the younger ones. Now it also looks like she is in some kind of race with her daughter in law. After the problems she had with the last baby, she shouls have took it as a sign God was telling her.... ENOUGH
    • RandallA  •  6 mths ago
Soimeone needs to tell her that it is a unterus, not a clown car.

Seriously, I thought they let this happen due to some relligious reasons.

This is just pollution, on par with belching smoke stacks and the Gulf oil spill. She should have her tubes tied and he needs a vasectomy.
