Draft Day 54 Watch Trailer
Imagine all the thrill of a series of discussions about college football player evaluations and trades involving NFL draft picks captured on the big screen (and now your smaller home screen). Actually, there's no need to imagine it, when you can watch it. Directed by Ivan Reitman, this sports dramedy stars Kevin Costner as an NFL general manager, Denis Leary as the team's coach, Frank Langella as its owner, and Jennifer Garner as a team lawyer in a secret relationship with the GM. Critics found it sentimental and predictable, though many found it likeable enough to merit a viewing. And it's certainly more entertaining than watching an actual NFL draft.
Night Moves 75 Watch Trailer
Jessie Eisenberg stars with Dakota Fanning and Peter Sarsgaard in this well-received eco-thriller from writer/director Kelly Reichardt (Meek's Cutoff, Old Joy). The trio play radical environmentalists who plan to blow up a dam. Don't expect a fast-paced thriller—this is a Reichardt film, after all—but critics generally admired the low-key, thought-provoking film (especially Eisenberg's performance), even if the ending isn't fully satisfying.
They Came Together 60 Watch Trailer
They Came Together is a winking takedown of romantic comedies from the Wet Hot American Summer team of David Wain and Michael Showalter. Paul Rudd and Amy Poehler star as Together's central couple, who are destined to be together despite the many obstacles they must overcome. (One obstacle: he’s a candy company executive threatening to close down her mom-and-pop candy store.) The strong supporting cast features Michael Ian Black, Ken Marino, Ellie Kemper, Jason Mantzoukas, Bill Hader, Jack McBrayer, Ed Helms, Adam Scott, Christopher Meloni, and Cobie Smulders among the many familiar faces. A majority of critics actually enjoyed this genre spoof, though some complained that the finished product came across as a series of sketches and jokes rather than a complete movie.

Captain America: The Winter Soldier 70 Watch Trailer
The year's highest-grossing film to date (though by the time you read this, it likely will have been surpassed by fellow Marvel hit Guardians of the Galaxy) is this sequel to Captain America: The First Avenger. Chris Evans returns as Steve Rodgers, a superhero adjusting to the modern world and life as a member of S.H.I.E.L.D. This time, he teams up with Scarlett Johansson’s Black Widow and Anthony Mackie’s Falcon to unravel a conspiracy and face off against the Winter Soldier (Sebastian Stan). Robert Redford joins Marvel’s world as Alexander Pierce, as does Emily Van Camp as Agent 13 and Frank Grillo as Crossbones. Returning players include Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury, Cobie Smulders as Maria Hill, and Toby Jones as Arnim Zola, while brothers Anthony and Joe Russo (best known for their work on TV comedies like Arrested Development and Community) take over for director Joe Johnston.
Palo Alto 69 Watch Trailer
The latest member of the Coppola family to enter the family business (filmmaking) is 27-year-old Gia Coppola, granddaughter of Francis Ford Coppola, and niece of Sofia and Roman. Gia's directorial debut, Palo Alto, is an adaptation of James Franco’s collection of short stories that's set in the titular Northern California town. In the drama, Emma Roberts's April has a dangerous flirtation with her single-dad soccer coach, Mr. B (James Franco). Teddy (Jack Kilmer, son of Val, who also has a small role) is into April, but he’s serving community service for a DUI while his best friend Fred (Nat Wolff) becomes more reckless and unpredictable with each passing night. Dev Hynes of Blood Orange provides the score.

The Fault in Our Stars 69 Watch Trailer
This adaptation of John Green’s best-selling 2012 novel stars Shailene Woodley as Hazel and her Divergent castmate (and brother in that film) Ansel Elgort as Gus. The two teens are fellow cancer patients who meet at a support group, where they fall in love. Josh Boone directs from a script by Scott Neustadter and Michael H. Weber, who worked on another YA story starring Woodley, The Spectacular Now. Laura Dern and Sam Trammell co-star as Hazel’s parents, Nat Wolff plays Augustus’ friend Isaac, and Mike Birbiglia plays the chipper support group leader. Most critics found it to be an above-average tearjerker and a faithful adaptation of the book.
Godzilla 62 Watch Trailer
The most famous of movie monsters is back. Of course, anyone who remembers 1998’s Godzilla or the slightly less awful Godzilla 2000 knows that the return of Godzilla can be bad news for viewers as well as the residents of whatever metropolis he's terrorizing. Results here, however, were generally positive, with fairly decent reviews and a strong box office showing. Making the leap from his low-budget debut Monsters, director Gareth Edwards decided to take a serious approach to a story that balances familial drama with $160 million worth of epic destruction. Bryan Cranston, Juliette Binoche, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Elizabeth Olsen, Ken Watanabe, Sally Hawkins, and David Strathairn star alongside the CGI beast.

Neighbors 68 Watch Trailer
In this R-rated summer comedy hit with mostly positive reviews, Seth Rogen and Rose Byrne star as a young couple with a newborn baby whose lives are suddenly turned upside down when a fraternity moves in next door. Zac Efron plays the leader of the fraternity while Dave Franco, Christopher Mintz-Plasse, Hannibal Buress, Jake Johnson, Craig Roberts, Ike Barinholtz and Jason Mantzoukas all have supporting roles. Nicholas Stoller (Forgetting Sarah Marshall, The Five-Year Engagement) directs from a script by Andrew J. Cohen and Brendan O’Brien.
The Rover 64 Watch Trailer
Director David Michôd’s follow-up to his acclaimed debut feature Animal Kingdom is set 10 years after the collapse of society and follows Guy Pearce as he tracks down the the gang who stole his car, with the reluctant help of a wounded man (Robert Pattinson) left behind after the theft. Michôd wrote the screenplay based on an original story idea he developed with Joel Edgerton. If you were a fan of Michôd's previous film, adjust your expectations here. The film received a mixed reaction when it debuted at Cannes in May, and many critics found that the occasionally dull film never really pulled together.
We Are the Best! 87
Don't let a few subtitles scare you away from one of 2014's most enjoyable films to date. Director Lukas Moodysson returns to the more welcoming tone of his earlier work (Show Me Love, Together) with this adaptation of his wife’s graphic novel Never Goodnight, the story of three 13-year-old girls who form a punk band in Stockholm in 1982. When it screened in Venice last year, this spirited coming-of-age tale was met with universal praise from critics, and reviewers liked it just as much when it opened in the States this summer—so much so that it's one of the best-reviewed films of the year.

Chef 68 Watch Trailer
After directing blockbuster hits (Iron Man) and misses (Cowboys & Aliens), Jon Favreau returns to his indie roots with Chef. In this small-scale dramedy, the writer-director casts himself as a restaurant chef who, after losing his job, decides to start up a food truck in hopes of reigniting his passion for food and reconnecting with his son (parallels with Favreau’s film career are merely coincidental). The cast includes Sofia Vergara as his ex-wife, Dustin Hoffman as the owner of the restaurant, Oliver Platt as the critic who hastens his departure, and Bobby Cannavale, John Leguizamo and Scarlett Johansson as employees at the restaurant. Oh, and Iron Man shows up as well. An early mixed reception from critics eventually turned into solid reviews, though many critics found Chef's final third a bit of a letdown.
Once Upon a Time in America: Extended Director's Cut
You've never seen it like this. Sergio Leone's 1984 crime epic, which spans five decades (the 1920s through the '60s) and stars Robert De Niro and James Woods as New York gangsters, was a nearly four-hour film (down from the six hours—and then 269 minutes—Leone originally planned) when it screened to raves at Cannes and in European cinemas. But the film's American distributor made severe cuts to the film (bringing it down to 134 minutes), while also rearranging the nonlinear film into chronological order, so angering Leone that he never made another film. (Critic Roger Ebert called the trimmed film "a travesty".) Now, however, a restored version is heading to disc, and it's the closest you'll be able to get to Leone's original vision. The new version clocks in at 251 minutes (22 minutes longer than previous home video releases), and adds a making-of documentary. The Blu-ray set also includes the original American theatrical version for purposes of comparison.
Transformers: Age of Extinction 32 Watch Trailer
It isn't the worst Transformers film, but it—wait, what are we saying? It is the worst Transformers film to date. Now that's an accomplishment. Also an accomplishment: getting audiences worldwide to cough up another $1 billion to see it. Director Michael Bay's final Transformers film (oh, don't you worry—the series will continue with another director) subs Mark Wahlberg for Shia LaBeouf and Kelsey Grammer for someone who wasn't Kelsey Grammer, though the most notable newcomers are the Dinobots. If you haven't seen it yet but are, for some reason, planning on doing so in the future, expect a muddle, very long, by-the-numbers affair.
